UKKO God Of Thunder + Predictor Of Ills
Disclaimers in first – get the paperwork done
I am not an environmentalist, engineer, or a soothsayer
Just a practicing mariner who has been to sea, but I know a
rotter when I see one
Word demands for vast quantities of everything imaginable
ever increasing
Going to ever more environmentally challenging places
World demand for sea transport is almost insatiable
Need ever bigger vessels, and many more smaller ones to
“feed” them
Ships burn fuel – a lot of fuel – bad fuel
Shipping is already causing massive environmental damage

The Problem
Release of C0² heavy metals + polycytic aromatic
compounds into the air which fall into the sea
Greenhouse Gases: (GHG) – sounds so benign – like
cherry tomatoes
Watch David Attenborough “Climate Change – The
Facts”
Current answer : Hold your breath + don’t drink the water
HAVE to take out the C0², carbon, sulphur + nitrogen
Environmentalists give us 10 years to make a start
We have to find an alternative, greener fuels, and in vast
amounts

6
The Effect
Marine ProfessionalsCasualty Investigation | Consultancy | Claims Support
7
A Bit Of History
Cheap ships
Cheap fuels
Cheap crew (as big a problem – more later
Vested interests
No Rules, No legislation
It is not just ship’s fuel
Plastic drinking bottles – $10,000 per year/ship
People and their aspirations need culling

8
Legislators + Scientists
Finally being dragged to the table – but still huge conflicts of interest and is going to be an ongoing, massive battle
No shortage of them
CSA; SEEMP; EEDI; GLOMEEP; GMN; AAQS; MTTC, SBSTA,⚫ LDCS (Least Developed Countries)
⚫ SIDS (Small Island Developing States)
Shipping is not in Paris Agreement
“All of this with the global warming, a lot of it is a hoax, it’s a hoax, it’s a money
making industry, OK”
The world’s legislators have to make the rules + enforce
“No more cannabis” – that was the end of it (sort of)

9
Scale Of The Problem
53,000 vessels
30% in small island states + trades
Enormous sizes of the vessels
Thousands more tiny ones
Where in the world are they? Will you get LPG in Bali?
Who will check your funnel with cotton buds?
Who will pull the stranded vessel off the coral?

Her Main Engine
Marine ProfessionalsCasualty Investigation | Consultancy | Claims Support
13
Starting To Control It
Low sulphur emission zones;
Baltic; North Atlantic; North America; Caribbean
Lower sulphur unit to 0.5% (2020)
Low sulphur fuels – where does all the high sulphur go?
What we are already doing is no where near enough
We have a long, long way to go

14
Alternative Fuels + Their Issues
Bio fuels – cut down rain forests
Chicken poo – not a lot of it
Hydrogen - Hindenburg
Wind power - ever been in Pacific Typhoon?
Cold ironing - the vessel needs to get there first
Electric/batteries – we all use rechargeable batteries…
Old cooking fat
Solar power
Nuclear??
Scrubbers
Marine ProfessionalsCasualty Investigation | Consultancy | Claims Support
15
Scrubbers
Wash out carbon + pump the residues into sea
Release toxins into the sea?
Harm marine life?
Cleaning burnt BBQ wire rack Blocked sink – carbon
Poke it down the plug
Where do we put the waste?
Immense size + cost
Already Retro-fitting now
They will be sorted by 2050 – Carbon briquettes?

Conclusions
Fuel in 2050 will be sorted
Fuel alone is only part of problem
We are all in this together
Must be done, and done soon
I am going to plant a tree after every flight
Stop Artic and Antarctic exploration? (we have
done enough damage)
Stop the North Sea Route (inevitable major
environmental disaster – we cannot play with
nature)
