The installation instructions in this guide apply to the following software CD-ROM versions (some listed CD-ROMs may not be included in your current Altera® package):

Installing the Quartus II Software on PCs

You can install the Quartus® II software on PCs running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 3 or later), Windows 2000, or Windows XP. Before installing the Quartus II software or any Altera® programming hardware, you should read the Quartus II readme.txt file, which provides information on Quartus II software and operating requirements, including disk space and memory. You should also refer to the Quartus II Installation & Licensing for PCs manual and the Quartus II Software Release Notes (www.altera.com/literature/rn/rn_qts.pdf) for more information.

To install the Quartus II software on a PC, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Quartus II Design Software for PCs CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.2. Click Install Quartus II Software and Related Software to install the Quartus II

software.

or

If the Quartus II software CD-ROM is in your CD-ROM drive, and the Setup program is not running, you can start it manually. Choose Run (Start menu) and type the following command:

<CD-ROM drive>:\install.exe r

The Setup program starts automatically and guides you through the installation process. If necessary, you can run the Setup program again to install additional features of the software.

1 The Setup program also allows you to install the GNU Tools and Excalibur™ Component software and the Model Technology™ ModelSim®-Altera software. The CD-ROMs for this software are included in the Quartus II subscription packages, but may not be included in the Altera development and Altera partner kits. To install these programs, you must turn on the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component or the ModelSim-Altera options in the Setup program. If you decide to install these programs at another time, refer to “Installing the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component Software on PCs” on page 11 and “Installing the Model Technology ModelSim Software on PCs” on page 19.

Installing the Quartus II Software on Solaris Workstations

You can install the Quartus® II software on a Sun Ultra workstation running Solaris 7 or 8. Before you install the Quartus II software or any Altera® programming hardware, you should read the Quartus II readme.txt file, which provides information on Quartus II software and operating requirements, including disk space, memory, and required operating system patches. You should also refer to the Quartus II Installation & Licensing for UNIX and Linux Workstations manual and the Quartus II Software Release Notes (www.altera.com/literature/rn/rn_qts.pdf) for more information.

1 Your workstation must have an ISO 9660 CD-ROM drive.

To install the Quartus II software on a Solaris workstation, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Quartus II Design Software for UNIX Workstations (Solaris 7 and 8 Only) CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

2. If you are running Volume Manager, the CD-ROM will be automatically mounted as /cdrom/cdrom0, and you must type only the last command below. Otherwise, you must be logged in as a superuser, and you must type all three of the following commands:

mkdir /cdrom/cdrom0 r/sbin/mount -F hsfs -o ro /dev/dsk/<device name of CD-ROM>

/cdrom/cdrom0 r/cdrom/cdrom0/install r

You are guided through the installation procedure.

3. When installation is complete, type the following command at the command prompt:

/sbin/umount /cdrom/cdrom0 r

4. To install the GNU Tools and Excalibur™ Component software, insert the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component Software CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to install the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component software. However, for the last command in step 2, you should type the following command:

/cdrom/cdrom0/install.sh r

6. To install the Model Technology™ ModelSim®-Altera software, insert the Altera VHDL & Verilog HDL Simulation Tool for Use with the Quartus II Software (Model Technology ModelSim Software) CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

7. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to install the ModelSim-Altera software. However, for the last command in step 2, you should type the following command:

/cdrom/cdrom0/unix/install.ms r

If you decide to install the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component software or the Model Technology ModelSim-Altera software at another time, refer to “Installing the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component Software on Solaris Workstations” on page 12 or “Installing the Model Technology ModelSim Software on Solaris Workstations” on page 20.

Installing the Quartus II Software on Linux Workstations

You can install the Quartus® II software on a PC running Red Hat Linux version 7.3 or 8.0. Before you install the Quartus II software or any Altera® programming hardware, you should read the Quartus II readme.txt file, which provides information on Quartus II software and operating requirements, including disk space, memory, and required operating system patches. You should also refer to the Quartus II Installation & Licensing for UNIX and Linux Workstations manual and the Quartus II Software Release Notes (www.altera.com/literature/rn/rn_qts.pdf) for more information.

1 You must be logged in as a superuser.

To install the Quartus II software on a Linux workstation, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Quartus II Design Software for Linux Workstations (Red Hat Linux Version 7.3 and 8.0 Only) CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

2. Type the following commands at the command prompt:

mkdir /mnt/cdrom r/bin/mount /mnt/cdrom r/mnt/cdrom/install r

/bin/umount /mnt/cdrom r

4. To install the GNU Tools and Excalibur™ Component software, insert the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component Software CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to install the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component software. However, for the last command in step 2, you should type the following command:

/mnt/cdrom/install.sh r

6. To install the Model Technology™ ModelSim®-Altera software, insert the Altera VHDL & Verilog HDL Simulation Tool for Use with the Quartus II Software (Model Technology ModelSim Software) CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

7. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to install the ModelSim-Altera software. However, for the last command in step 2, you should type the following command:

Installing the Quartus II Software on HP-UX Workstations

You can install the Quartus® II software on an HP 9000 Series 700/800 workstation running HP-UX 11.0 with ACE dated November, 1999 or later. Before you install the Quartus II software or any Altera® programming hardware, you should read the Quartus II readme.txt file, which provides information on Quartus II software and operating requirements, including disk space, memory, and required operating system patches. You should also refer to the Quartus II Installation & Licensing for UNIX and Linux Workstations manual and the Quartus II Software Release Notes (www.altera.com/literature/rn/rn_qts.pdf) for more information.

1 Your workstation must have an ISO 9660 CD-ROM drive, and you must be logged in as a superuser.

To install the Quartus II software on an HP-UX workstation, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Quartus II Design Software for UNIX Workstations (HP-UX 11.0 only) CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

mkdir /cdrom r/sbin/mount -o cdcase /dev/dsk/<device name of CD-ROM>

/cdrom/install.sh r

6. To install the Model Technology™ ModelSim®-Altera software, insert the Altera VHDL & Verilog HDL Simulation Tool for Use with the Quartus II Software (Model Technology ModelSim Software) CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

7. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to install the ModelSim-Altera software. However, for the last command in step 2, you should type the following command:

You can install the GNU Tools for ARM® processors and the Excalibur™ Component for SOPC Builder Tool on PCs running Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP; or on UNIX workstations running Solaris 7 or 8 or HP-UX 11.0; or on Linux workstations running Red Hat Linux version 7.3 or 8.0. Before installing the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component software, you should read the readme.txt file, which provides information on installation and on software and operating requirements, including disk space and memory.

Installing the GNU Tools andExcalibur Component Software on PCs

To install the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component software on a PC, follow these steps:

1. Insert the GNU Tools and Excalibur Component Software CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

2. Choose Run (Start menu) and type the following command:

<CD-ROM drive>:\windows\setup.exe r

The Setup program starts automatically and guides you through the installation process.

The default location for the Excalibur Component system directory is usually /usr/altera/kits/xa; if you use a different directory path, you must substitute the correct path name for <Excalibur Component system directory>.

5. If you are planning to use the Model Technology™ ModelSim® simulation software with the Quartus® II software and the Excalibur Component software, add the following lines to your .login or .cshrc file:

setenv MG_ROOT /<Quartus II software system directory>/eda/sim_lib/excalibur/stripe_model_solaris/ModelGen/manager

setenv MG_LIB /<Quartus II software system directory>/eda/sim_lib/excalibur/stripe_model_solaris/ModelGen/manager/SunOS5/MM

Installing the Model Technology ModelSim Software

You can install the Model Technology™ ModelSim® software on PCs running Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP; or on UNIX workstations running Solaris 7 or 8 or HP-UX 11.0; or on Linux workstations running Red Hat Linux version 7.3 or 8.0. The ModelSim-Altera® readme files in the modelsim directory on the CD-ROM provide information on ModelSim-Altera software operating requirements and licensing. You should read the appropriate readme file before installing the ModelSim-Altera software.

Installing the Model Technology ModelSim Software on PCs

To install the ModelSim-Altera software on a PC, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Altera VHDL & Verilog HDL Simulation Tool for Use with the Quartus® II Software (Model Technology ModelSim Software) CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

2. Choose Run (Start menu) and type the following command:

<CD-ROM drive>:\modelsim\pc\modelsim-altera.exe r

The Setup program starts automatically and guides you through the installation process.

To install the ModelSim-Altera software on a Sun Ultra workstation running Solaris 7 or 8, follow these steps:

Obtaining a License File

You must have a valid, unexpired Altera® license file in order to use the Altera software provided in this package. If you need to obtain a license file, follow these steps:

1. Point your web browser to the Altera web site at www.altera.com.2. Click the Licensing icon.3. Specify the requested information.

1 Altera recommends that you save any previous license.dat file in a temporary directory, in case you need to refer to it later.

4. When you receive the license file text, you should either save it to a file with the file name license.dat, or copy the lines from the license file to an existing license file. If you are using the license.dat file with the Quartus® II software, Altera recommends that you save your license.dat file in a top-level directory named flexlm.
