THE FIRST SON IN TODAY’S GOSPEL SAID HE WOULD DO HIS FATHER’S BIDDING, BUT DID NOT. THE

SECOND SON BALKED AT FIRST, BUT THEN REPENTED AND DID AS HE WAS ASKED. WHAT SERVICE IS GOD

CALLING ME TO DO? WHICH SON AM I MORE LIKE?

MESSAGE FROM FATHER TOM

Another Sunday dealing

with fairness! Ezekiel is

trying to help his people

realize that the actions of

one’s parents do not condone

or condemn their children.

His listeners wanted Ezekiel

to say that if a parent does wrong, then the

children too should be punished or if a

parent is the neighborhood saint, then the

children too should be held in high esteem

even if they have chosen a wicked path.

Ezekiel, however, advocates individual

responsibility for one’s actions and his

listeners think, he’s “unfair.” Jesus is

dealing with similar issues of fairness. If

Jesus had asked his listeners which son was

the honorable one, they would have

responded it was the second. They would

have been correct because the second showed

his father honor by responding to the father’s

request with respect. But Jesus doesn’t ask

which one showed honor. He asks which one

did the father’s will. And, of course, it was

the first. We can probably hear the scribes

and elders muttering that it was an unfair

question. In this case, they are like the

second son; they seem to be faithful in their

words but their actions prove different. The

tax collectors and other public sinners

initially turned from God but once they

heard John, they regretted their actions and

returned. In the second reading, Paul is

writing to Philippi, a colony of retired

military personnel, and he is telling them

their knee must bend to Jesus rather than to

Caesar. If they do this, of course, they will

risk much because Nero was Caesar at the

time and they would have heard what he

was doing to the early church. In all three

readings this week we hear the call to

individually take responsibility for our faith

and our actions.
