BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS & UPDATES

Page #3

Kudos to picnic organizers Janice Wardan & Galen Howard for a very organized picnic, with a big thanks to all those who helped—Erich Kaufman, Tom Arnold, Patty Shemkus, and a multi-tude of others.

The Board approved Dance Lessons for the Fall & Winter Sessions as pesented by Ros Good-man.

Patty Shemkus presented very detailed profit & loss comparisons, events reports to-date. President Liontos reported a change in event leaders for the Coos Bay trip with co-captains be-

ing Diane Kaufman and Erich Kaufman. The Board discussed recognition awards for event leaders, with discussions to be continued. The Board discussed a name change to Altair Sports and Social Club, with discussions to be

continued. The Board discussed action to be taken if an event leader does not turn in reconciliation for

trip closure, such as no future trips would be approved for that leader. An event training pool was established to assist folks in completing packets: Janice Wardan,

Nancy Gripp, Keith Steinbruck, Lynn Bruno, and Carol Fernlund. The Board ratified Madelynn Romeo as a member of the Membership Committee. Demetri Liontos announced speakers for the next couple of general meetings: September-Bob

Welch, and October– Bill Sullivan. Lynn Bruno presented information and a budget for the 2016 Pray for Powder on November 9,

2016 with co-event leaders Lynn Bruno and Lola McAllister. In preparation of Altair’s 30th Anniversary Celebration in 2017, Janice Wardan provided details

of Altair’s 20th & 25th Anniversary Celebrations to aid in the planning and is putting together the committees to prepare for the 30th Anniversary Celebration next year.

Demetri Liontos will take a straw vote at a future general meeting whether to have the annual picnic as well as the Anniversary celebration next summer or to combine the two. The annual picnic, is actually less expensive that a regular general meeting — so cost is not a factor.

Janice Wardan presented the Board a packet of proposed changes to the By-Laws and the Al-tair Guidelines and requested the Board to review both for consistency. The Board will provide Janice input on updates.

———- EVENT / TRIP PLANNING ———- Event/Trip planning guidelines and forms are available on the Altair web site. Please see Altair Glossary & Guidelines for de-tails on planning events, sign-up policies, payment policies. If you have any questions, please contact Janice Wardan.

COURTESY DURING THE GENERAL MEETING

speakers or announcements at the General Meetings due to the conversations going on. We know how

to our speakers by giving them our full attention and a courtesy to others trying to listen.

Transactions at the Treasurer’s table and all sign-up tables should cease once the 7:00 p.m. Gen-

eral Meeting begins (to eliminate distractions to speakers and other members).

Please help the rest of us trying to listen to the speakers by not talking during the General Meetings.

Thanks for your courtesy!!!

Bountiful Harvest - September's General Meeting will be an opportunity for all of the club's gardeners to share their excess home grown produce (or flowers) with other club members. We realize that the hot summer is causing plants and veggies to finish up early, but we are guessing that there are still some to-matoes or zucchinis out there waiting to be shared.

October meeting is sharing Books, CDs. DVD’s ,etc. November meeting is Food for Lane County food and money donations. As well as a portion of the pro-ceeds going toward Food for Lane County for the Pray for Powder event. December will be the Giving Tree for the holidays.

ALTAIR’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Altair will be 30 years old in 2017 and we are planning an anniversary celebra-tion next summer to honor the success of this club that we love and all it’s members.

Plans are already underway for the live band and catered dinner. The date of the event will be determined by the membership. President Liontos will take a straw vote at the September General Meeting whether to continue to have the annual picnic as well as the anniversary celebration next summer or to combine the two on the date of the August General Meeting on the 2nd Wednesday in August. In 2007, the members elected to have both —- the regular picnic on the 2nd Weds.of the month and the 25th anniversary celebration on a Saturday in July. The annual picnic which is a potluck, is actually less expensive that a regular general meeting — so cost is not a factor. However, the picnic relies on man/woman power, so needs the commitment of volunteers. So it is up to the members. Questions regarding the 30th celebration, please contact Janice Wardan ([email protected] 541-517-6067)

NOT READY TO THINK OF WINTER ACTIVIES??? (But, SOMEBODY has to……….) In spite of the beautiful summer days and the 90 degree weather, Altair Sports Directors must start planning for the coming season so Altair members have plenty of events and trips to select from. It is also that time of year for vol-unteers to come forward to help out with the Winter Sports and Activities. Check out the Winter Sports Section which is back in the newsletter on page #13. Highlights: Winter Sports Planning Meeting Thursday, September 22, 2016, 6:00 p.m., Market of Choice (2nd floor Meeting Room), 29th & Willamette. Join Gregg Fuller and Tom Arnold in planning winter sports activities. See details on page #14. Pray for Powder—Winter Sports Gala: November General Meeting, November 9, 2016 Join Lynn Bruno and Lola McAllister in celebrating the start of the Winter Sports season at the annual Pray for Powder event. See details on page #14.

Patterson Mountain Hike —- (4.6 miles,/ easy/ 600’ elevation gain) It's mid-summer..and what a perfect day to hike Patterson Mountain! Six Altairians did just that yesterday, with ideal hiking weather and no one else to intrude, we had a 5-star hike! Thank you, Stephen McCaffrey, for scouting/organizing/leading this splendid outing into old growth forests, rain for-est ferns and spectacular views of the Three Sisters and Broken Top at the top. (Thanks also to Marian West who often led this one for Altair and suggested it to Stephen.) All this, good for the soul. --In appreciation, Demetri Liontos

WINTER SPORTS PLANNING MEETING: Date: Thursday, September 22, 2016 Time: 6:00 p.m. Place: Market of Choice (Meeting Room), 29th & Willamette It’s almost September, and you know what that means: soon putting greens will be knee-deep in snow, lakes and rivers will be bone-chillingly cold, bike paths will be slick with ice, hiking trails will be muddy, the volley ball court will be a swamp…and ski season will be just around the corner! Gregg Fuller and Tom have reserved the meeting room for the winter sports (all winter sports) planning meeting. Have an idea for a new event, want to see an old favorite trip return, or just want to graze the delicious Market of Choice salad bar, then come to the meeting. (As a courtesy to Market of Choice, if you can, please try to buy some drinks and/or food from them since they have been very accommodating with us.) Can’t make it? Send your ideas and suggestions to Gregg Fuller ([email protected] or 541 542 6809) or Tom Arnold ([email protected] or 541 729 2251).

Pray for Powder Winter Sports Gala

Wednesday Nov 09, 2016

Come join in the fun of Altair’s annual “Pray for Powder” winter sports gala. More detailed information will be reported as the event evolves. We’ll have a speaker and information about Mt Bachelor, Willamette Pass and Hoodoo ski resorts. Also joining us will be several local merchants who sell outdoor gear, in-cluding Berg’s Ski and Snowboard Shop and Backcountry Gear. Signup tables for Altair trips and activi-ties will be available. Doors will open at 6:00 pm, with the ballroom decorated in a winter snow theme. Each year, our vendors and other businesses responsible for our calendar of activities donate items for our raffle prizes. We expect the raffle items to include lift tickets, outdoor gear, Altair and restaurant gift certificates, theater tickets, lodging packages, gift baskets and MORE. A portion of the proceeds from the raffle will be donated to FOOD FOR LANE COUNTY, along with canned food donations. Be sure to bring extra money for raffle tickets. This event is open to the public. Invite your friends and other potential members to show them what a great club we have. If you have any questions about this event, or you would like to help with decorations, greeting our guests, or selling raffle tickets, please contact: Lynn Bruno 541-683-3753 or [email protected]. These new member socials are held quarterly and are designed to help our newest members get to know each other in a fun and relaxed environment and to find out what our club has to offer. These so-cials are informal gatherings with other new members, some Board Members, and Sports Directors who can let you know what activities are available to you each season. We hope that new members will attend each quarter their first year (or 4 times).
