Thank you I would like to thank Mr Price for his leadership contribution as Principal whilst I was on leave for the start of this term. I would

also like to thank Mr Trirro, who took on the role of Deputy Principal, and Ms Lincoln as Head Teacher English. It is a great privilege

road as cars and buses come and go during the day. Students need to demonstrate due care when walking through our car park,

just as they would when walking through any car park.

and faculty projects they are pursuing. On Thursday afternoon, staff are taking part in further professional learning from 3.30pm

Site to Help Students with Career Choices

Through our Google Analytics, we can see that information for parents is highly sought after when it comes to helping their children

with their career choices. For that reason, we have developed an Assist your child feature page containing links to the articles that

provide tips and advice for parents and carers to assist their child with their career development.

The link to the new feature page can be found on the Assist others page via the website footer. Visit ‘myfuture’

We have just been informed that the Annual TVET and TAFE Open Day for Year 10 students will be held at Wollongbar on Friday

29th June (Week 9, Week A). I have put in a bus quote, and permission notes can be picked up from inside the box attached to the

Careers/Welfare Office door, from Monday 11th June onwards. Cost will be subsidised at $1 per student. Great chance to consider

TAFE as part of senior subjects or to visit a TAFE Campus to see what facilities they have that you might access after you leave

school.

REMINDER: Those students who are NOT attending the Year 10 SNOW Excursion next Term are expected to do a 5 day Work

Experience block as the alternative educational school approved activity. School based trainees may be able to approach

employers to gain extra days during that week. Students are not permitted to go to their casual jobs but are to find an area they

are researching for future post school planning/subject choices or potential employers for Apprentice or Traineeships. Kits will be

issued to students over the next couple of weeks to take to potential employers to complete.

16 Classics before 16

Classics are novels that have been categorised as distinguished examples of writing from particular periods in history, which are

accepted as important or influential in shaping Western culture. They are time honoured, yet can include Modern Classics, think

“Cult, Canon or Cutting Edge.” A display of the library’s classics can be found on the ramp with a yellow tape on the shelf. Read 16

before your 16th birthday to get your name on the Classics Reading Wall. Pick up a record sheet from the library.

Year 11 Work Studies Year 11 Work Studies have spent the past several weeks designing and

building a display case for the Alstonville House Cup point tokens. The

display case will be used to store point tokens awarded to students who

participate in House Cup competitions and events. The Work Studies

students first made concept drawings on paper, and then finalised ideas

using a Computer Aided Drawing program on the computers. They then

spent several lessons in the Industrial Arts workshop building and

painting the final product. Thanks to the Art Department for assisting

with the sign-writing component of the project.

Year 7 Technology Mandatory – FOOD The year 7 classes, on the recent free dress day, continued to cook up a feast in the kitchen. Savoury pinwheels were a real hit

with the students. I doubt they found their way home, too hot and delicious to make it past recess!

Some of the highlights of the day were:

A great canteen and BBQ organised by Mrs John, Mr Sharp and Year 12. The excellent social atmosphere that students and staff enjoy at the carnival. Novelty events co-ordinated by the SRC and Mrs Bramley.

Congratulations to everyone on a great day!

The first two competitors in each event and first four competitors in the 100m (these 4 students compete in both the 100m sprint

and the 4 x 100m relay) in each age division have qualified to represent the school at the Northern Rivers Zone Athletics Carnival

at Riverview Park, Lismore on Friday 29th June, 2018 (Week 9, Term 2). A list of those students who qualified is on the PDHPE

Staffroom Notice Board.

Rugby Union

The New South Wales Combined High Schools Sport Association (NSWCHSSA) Rugby Union Carnival was held in Dubbo from 23rd-

25th May. Alstonville High student Jayden Lynch, of Year 12, was competing as a member of the North Coast Open Boys Rugby

Union Team. Jayden enjoyed the experience of competing at the State Carnival and put in a strong effort as part of the North

Coast team. The North Coast team finished with two wins and two losses and defeated Western Region in their last game 53 to 7

to win the ‘Plate Final’. Because of his fine performances at this carnival, Jayden was selected into the NSWCHS under 18’s Rugby

Union 1st Squad. This is the third year in a row that Jayden has been selected into the NSWCHS Team. Jayden will be travelling to

Sydney over the next few months for regular training and games. Well done Jayden.

Netball

The NSWCHSSA Secondary Netball Championships was recently held from 29th-31st May at Maitland in the Hunter Region.

Alstonville High had three of our Year 12 students Sarah Bransgrove, Leilani Rohweder and Charlotte Yager, competing as members

of the North Coast Open Girls Netball Team. The North Coast team played very well with five wins, one draw and four losses. The

girls played all the other regional teams that were competing at state to finish equal fifth out of 11 teams. These girls enjoyed the

experience of competing at state and they should be proud of the outstanding contributions they made to the team’s performance

throughout the carnival.

Soccer

Recently Emma Eichorn of Year 10 returned from the NSWCHSSA Open Girls Football (Soccer) Championships held at Wollongong

from the 8th-10th May. The North Coast Team played very well, however, their first two matches were against some very difficult

opponents, teams that would go on to finish 2nd and 5th overall at the Championships. The North Coast Team played Sydney North

first and went down 3-0, and in their next game, they were narrowly beaten by South Coast 2-1. The North Coast team won their

next three games and finished ninth out of 12 Regional teams that competed at state. Well done Emma.

Brooke Hofmeyer yr11 and Lucy Turner yr12. These girls will compete at The NSWCHSSA Open Girls Touch Football Championships

to be held at Wagga Wagga from Tuesday 26th June to Thursday 28th June. Our other students who competed at the North Coast

Touch Trials held at Port Macquarie were Tess Gilmour yr10, Aeyrn Peiti yr9, Jake Balfour yr10, Kye Duesbury yr10 and Max Meury

A Message from your Parents and Citizen’s team

Dear Parents and Carers

Did you know that we currently have 770 students attending Alstonville High School? Even more are

expected next year.

That equates to around 600 families who depend on our school canteen to provide nutritious and

delicious meals for our kids attending the school.

Presently, the school canteen has only 12 volunteers assisting on a semi-regular basis.

With up to 600 families making up our school community surely we can improve on only 12 canteen

volunteers!

The canteen operates not only to provide good food for our kids, but also to contribute any profits

towards much needed - and much cried for – improvements to our school, which directly benefits our

kids.

With too few volunteers, we are forced to pay wages for extra staff to keep the canteen operating and

that means less profit and therefore less benefit for our kids.

Please help us keep the school canteen operating and turning a profit. VOLUNTEER!

It’s a fun day of bustle and chatter and friendship – come along and see for yourself. It is not difficult or

tricky or demanding – if you can make a sandwich and wash dishes you would be more help than you can

imagine.

Volunteers receive their lunch and morning tea or coffee free as thanks for their time and efforts as well

as the interactions you have with the children, our children. You are also welcome to pair up and bring a

friend or relative along with you to help as well.

Try it out – these are our kids and the benefits created from our volunteered time go directly to them.

Jacquie, our Canteen Manager, can be contacted on 0435 385 607 and she would be delighted to hear

from you. Give her a call and organise your volunteer day or morning – perhaps it would be a morning a

week or a day a month – any time you can spare would be greatly appreciated.

Please, join us in the canteen and see for yourself how enjoyable a day of giving can be.
