It’s now time to play Larry Wilfong’s

WHATSIT? CONTEST

WIZARDS WORLD

Holiday Hasenpfeffers Here's arguably the most popular apparatus trick to be performed for children in all of Magicdom (is that a word?). Originated by an English magician named Norman; Abbott's, U.F. Grant/MAK MAGIC, Hughes, Stanley and many others manufactured and sold this trick in various sizes and subject matter to magicians from the 1940's to the present day. Of course, other sellers both here and abroad have manufactured their versions, too. Usually the props are 12-14 inches tall, but Vienna Magic, MAK, Wolf, Collector's Workshop and some overseas knock-off guys have made smaller "close-up" versions of the same trick. Other apparatus, like the Cobra & the Lion, are 3 feet tall or taller, mounted on casters and can be seen on the largest of stages. The 5 inch tall props you see here were made by MAK Magic and an almost identical, although not as well made, set has been imported, too.

YOU can start your Holiday season off right by being the first club member to contact our Editor Leigh Hotz before the next meeting with the correct name of this trick; when you do Leigh will cheerfully present you with a FREE TENDOLLAR GIFT CERTIFICATE to the online WIZARD MAGIC SHOP. answer to last month's WHATSIT? = Harriet the Witch

Letter From Your PREZ...

7090 E Mescal St. Scottsdale, AZ 85254

( Pueblo Norte Senior Living )

Dear Magical Members,

As we move through the end of 2015, I thank you for allowing me to have had the honor of serving as your President for the past year and a half. It is great to have such a wonderful magic group. This time of year is always a busy time, so I ask you to mark your calendars for the last two events of the year. First of all our regular scheduled meeting on Tuesday the 17th of November, where you will get to see this years volunteers for the El Norte residents magic show, do their rehearsal show. That should be an hour of Magic with Jay Gotham your MC, and the magic of Bob Coluzzi, Bill Newhouse, Gabriel Lim, Leigh Hotz, David Goldberg and Frank Pastula. (if I missed anyone, I am very sorry and ask you please to contact me at 602-818-1893) Following that all members are encouraged to perform either something that was purchased at the auction or anything you would like. We hope to have an evening full of Magic with the fun ending around 9:00-9:15 P.M.

Our last event of the year will be our annual Christmas Party which will be held at Larry’s club houseon Saturday December 5th at 6:00 PM. (11112 E. Gary Road in Scottsdale/Just off the 101 and Shea) All members are FREE, and you may bring a guest or guests for $10.00 per guest. Because we need to know how much food to order,we ask you to RSVP 602-938-3153 By November 28th ( at least one week before the party). We will be asking as always for volunteers to perform Magic that evening. Each volunteer will get a ticket with a chance to win a Free Magic Prize.

Rumor has it that Larry will have his traditional Christmas WHATSIT? Located at the front of the room again this year and everyone will have a chance to win another FREE prize or two in the Whatsis? Drawing. The last thing that you need to know about our Christmas Party is that we are altering the gift exchange a little. In the past it was a long process of picking and stealing gifts. This will NOT be the procedure this year. This year when you choose to participate we ask you to bring a new or like new $20.00 or so wrapped Non card Magic Gift.(no wine, chocolates, etc) We will have a plan in place for everyone to receive a gift quickly; after it is opened it is your gift to take home, unless you would like to go to the trading corner. We will have a designated spot where you can make a trade with another gift recipient if you would like. ( your choice)

Last of all I would like to thank everyone that helped with making our Annual Magic Auction a huge success! Our auctioneers Jay Gorham and Larry Wilfong did an excellent job as did our Webmaster Leigh Hotz and wife Mamata (Madam Secretary) with the financial part of the auction. I think Ring #55 owes a special thanks to BILL MEEKER for donating a lot of magic to the club. It was all auctioned off and 100% profit went to the club. Also a thank-you to ANDY GREGET for his contributions and to Friend of Ring #55, Robb Fulmer, for donating 20% of his sales to our treasury. So sorry if I missed anyone. Thank you all so much. ( especially Gail Wilfong for making coffee and help cleaning up)

Hope to see everyone at our Meeting on the 17th, however if you can not make it, I wish you and your family a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

MONTHLY Ring Report

Ring 55 Ring Report of October 2015By Mamata M. Hotz

We had THREE magic events this month. Steering Meeting:

First was our steering meeting where our officers started laying out the activities for the rest of the term. Members in attendance included Frank Pastulla Jr., Mamata Hotz, Leigh Hotz, Jay Gorham, and David Goldberg. Tentative events are subject to change without notice. November theme will be what you purchase at the magic auction. December is our holiday party, January theme will be items not intended for magic that work well for magic shows (aka: It’s not what you think) February will be Valentine magic or any magic that works well for other February holidays including Presidents Day. March magic is SPRING Magic theme. April will be Ring 55 Elections. and May will be our annual Installation banquet.

Magic Auction & Flea Market:Our auction was officiated by Larry Wilfong as auctioneer who was assisted by Jay Gorham. Leigh

Hotz manned the computer to track the sales, and Bob Coluzzi , our treasurer collected the fees for the sales tables. People who came early was treated with free coffee and snacks provided by Frank Pastula Jr, The Wilfong's, and a few others, including Leigh Hotz who made his famous home made apple cake. A special thanks goes out to Bill Meeker who once again, generously donated 100% proceeds from his items to the club. Rob Fulmer upped his normal 10% sales to the club to 20%. Thanks again. Magic table sellers included Andy Greget, Clark Wirthlin, Barry Schor and a few others. Everyone seem to have a great time selling items and getting deals. I think the best deal of the day was a Hughes Magic handmade boutania which normally retails new for over $2,000 was sold for only $20.

Allan Drew Lecture:President Frank Pastula Jr called our meeting to order and discussed future events including our

upcoming holiday party. Also discussed was a free magic show our club will be doing for the residents of the community in appreciation for use of their clubhouse we use for our meetings.Treasurer Bob Coluzzi gave our financial report and we were in good shape in that field. after a few other meeting related tasks, Frank introduced our headliner of the evening, Allan Drew, a comedy magician from the fair state of Maine. Mr Drew lecture was chock full of tricks, props, tips, and ideas that could be used by any of us. Most importantly, many items used in his lecture can be gotten on a low budget to maximizing savings, yet still creating a fulfilling magic act. Allan had so many great magic ideas to share with us, it was hard to fit it in one lecture, but he succeeded in filling our minds with good tips we can use.

Next month will be a double feature meeting. We will have a preview magic show performance we will be doing for the residents, as well as showing off items we got from the auction. Until next month, this is Mamata Hotz signing off…. Whew! That was a long report. My fingers are getting sore on the keyboard. What? I am still typing? Noooo I can not stop.. Pull the plug from this compute…… (blank screen)
