ApplicationHAT’s AlphaMIST mesh pad type mist eliminators remove droplets by impingementon the wire surface. The liquid collected on the filaments is then able to drain fromthe pad under gravity. They have a limited range of useful operation in which theyprovide almost complete removal of droplets down to about 3-5 microns. Turndownrange of vapour rate is around 3:1. At excessively high vapour velocities, the liquiddroplets that impinge on the wire surface are sheared off by the vapour and re-entrained before they are able to drain. At very low vapour velocities, all but thelarger droplets are able to follow the vapour path through the mesh and thus avoidimpingement; however the inherent design of the separator vessel means that inmost applications an effective turndown performance of 10:1 can be achieved.

Wire mesh mist eliminators are well suited to remove mechanically formedentrainment from packed and trayed process towers, spray columns, venturiscrubbers and other gas scrubbing devices. The are also a widely used de-entrainment device in knock out drums and separators.

General ConfigurationAlphaMIST mesh demisters consist of a pad of knitted metal or plastic wire meshusually sandwiched between grids for mechanical support. Except for units lessthan about 600mm diameter, they are normally split into sections of between 300 to400mm wide to facilitate installation through a normal vessel manway. The padsare cut slightly oversize to ensure a snug fit and thus eliminate any possible vapourby-pass either between sections or between pad and vessel wall (or shroud). Eachmesh pad is formed from crimped layers of fabric knitted from monofilament withthe direction of the crimp rotated 90 degrees in each adjacent layer to provide auniform voidage together with a high ratio of filament surface per unit volume of pad.

Standard support grids consist of a framework of 25mm x 3mm thick flat bar fixed toa grid consisting of 6mm rods usually spaced on 150mm centres to retain the meshwith minimum obstruction of the face of the pad. The top and bottom grids areconnected by spacer rods passing through the mesh that are welded to each grid toensure the dimensional stability of the pad. Mesh pads can also be furnished withspecial heavy duty support grids where these are required to provide a workingplatform inside the vessel.

AlphaMIST mesh pads can be installed either horizontally for vertical vapour flow orvertically for horizontal vapour flow. For vertical vapour flow, mesh pads arenormally either 100mm or 150mm thick and for horizontal flow are normally greaterat 150 to 200mm+ thick. Where mesh pad thickness exceeds 300mm, the unit isusually divided into 2 separate layers so that the sections will pass through normalvessel manways and in such cases wire screens are fitted between layers tomaintain pad integrity during installation.

SpecificationAlphaMIST mesh mist eliminators are manufactured in a wide variety of metals andsynthetics of which the following are supplied as standard:-

Stainless steels (types 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 430)MonelNickel & nickel alloysCopper & copper alloysGlass wool or fibrePolypropyleneHalar / PTFE

The wire mesh may be knitted and formed to provide a wide range of specificproperties to suit various applications. The following is a list of standard mesh stylesthat we supply:-

STYLE APPLICATIONS

HE High efficiency removal of fine mistsGP General purpose (maximum efficiency with low pressure loss)DS Dirty service where fouling is an issue

Mist Eliminator DesignMesh pads should be sized so that the face area provides a vapour rate ofapproximately 80% of the maximum allowable re-entrainment velocity. Forestimation purposes, suitable design velocities occur at a K-factor of 0.11 m/s forvertical flow, or 0.15 for horizontal gas flow (due to better drainage) where:-

vs = K . {( L - V )/ V} 0.5

where vs = Actual vapour velocity (m/s)V = Vapour density (kg/m3)L = Liquid density (kg/m3)

Operating pressure loss across the pad within the above design range is normallyless than 0.5 kPa depending upon mesh density, pad thickness, liquid loading andvapour rate. An approximate pressure drop can be estimated from the formula:

WetP (kPa) = C . (L – V) . K2 . t

Where C = 0.20 for a typical ‘GP’ style mesh demister, and t is the pad thickness inmetres. Note that the dry pressure drop is about half of the wet figure.

For optimum designs the K-factor should be modified to take into account theoperating pressure, liquid viscosity, surface tension, liquid entrainment, etc, soplease confirm sizing against HAT’s proprietary design program.

AlphaMIST® DESIGN SHEET

Vane mist eliminators consist of aseries of plates or vanes spaced toprovide passage for vapour flow andprofiled with angles to providesufficient change of direction for liquiddroplets to impact, coalesce and drainfrom the surfaces of the plates. HATdesign and manufacture a range ofAlphaMIST™ vane styles whichprovide the following benefits:

High vapour capacity Resistance to fouling Low pressure loss Effective removal of high liquid

loads

The "VV" Range is a plain, non-pocketed style designed for largerdroplet removal from vapour in normal,light fouling applications with eithervertical or horizontal gas flow.

AlphaMIST “V-V” Droplet Separator

The "VH" Range is designed fordroplet removal from vapour flowinghorizontally. In this configuration, thevanes are fitted with hooks (VH11) orpockets (VH-2) to trap and drain thecollected liquid. They are generallyeffective at higher vapour velocities at

which smaller droplet size removalcan be achieved.

AlphaMIST “VH-1” Droplet Separator

Both of the above styles can besupplied in sections for installationthrough vessel manways to besupported on full annular support ringswelded to the vessel wall.Alternatively they can also be suppliedas complete "Vane Packs" where thevanes are enclosed in a Frame whichis flanged for direct attachment to a"gas box".

AlphaMIST® DESIGN SHEET

The "VV" Range

The AlphaMIST VV is an efficient styleof vane mist eliminator commonlyused for removing entrained liquidfrom vapour flowing vertically upwards,and for fouling services. In thisconfiguration, liquid droplets impingeand coalesce on the vanes as thevapour flow is deflected around thevane profile. The liquid collected onthe vanes drains downwards undergravity so long as the vapour velocity isnot high enough to cause re-entrainment. The graph overleafshows the relationship betweenvapour rate and the droplet size rangewhich is effectively removed (typically99% removal).

Vane assemblies are fabricated insections sized to fit through vesselmanways. Generally they aresupported on an annular ring weldedto the vessel wall with additionalmidspan supports being requiredwhere the vessel diameter exceedsapprox 1000mm. Hold down barsshould be fitted to cleats welded to thevessel wall to secure the pack.

The principal applications for this styleof droplet separator are the removal ofcoarse entrainment with high liquidload and also services of a foulingnature. For severe fouling duty e.g.containing dust, the unit could beinstalled together with a spray systemdesigned to wash out collected solids.

AlphaMIST® DESIGN SHEET

The "VH” Range

The AlphaMIST VH is a vane pack forefficient droplet removal andresistance to fouling suitable for highrate horizontal vapour flow. Entrainedliquid droplets impinge on the vanesand collect in pockets that trap thecoalesced liquid which then drainsfrom the unit rather than being blownthrough by the vapour. Collectionefficiency is a function of both vapourvelocity and the difference in densitybetween the vapour and liquid. Thegraph below shows the relationshipbetween vapour rate and the dropletsize range which is effectivelyremoved (typically 99% removal).

HAT offers a hooked (VH-1) design asstandard and a pocketed (VH-2)design for more arduous applicationsin clean service.

VH vane packs are fabricated insections sized to fit through vesselmanways.

AlphaMIST “VH-1” and “VH-2”

The installation arrangement shouldensure that the vane pack is clampedto a ledge and effectively preventsvapour from bypassing the vanes. Toachieve this, the VH is normallysupplied mounted inside a suitableframe as a VH-F unit with a drainagechannel and flanged for mounting to asuitable plate or gas box inside theprocess vessel.

Mist Eliminator Design

The design of vane mist eliminatorsdepends on many factors, but apreliminary sizing can be undertakenrelatively easily using proprietary K-factors in the same way as for wiremesh demisters.

Face AreaAlthough it should be treated withcaution and confirmed with HATbefore actual use, the followingprocedure may be used:

vvme = K . { (L – V ) / V } 0.5

where:

vvme = Max velocity in vanes, m/sK = K-Factor, see below, m/sL = Density of liquid, kg/m3

V = Density of vapour, kg/m3

and:

Avme (m2) = Q (m3/s) / vvme (m/s)

AlphaMIST Vane Style K-Factor

V-V (vertical gas flow) 0.175V-V (horizontal gas flow) 0.200VH-1 (horizontal gas flow) 0.225VH-2 (horizontal gas flow) 0.250

Pressure DropThe disadvantage of using the moreexpensive, pocketed designs is thatthe pressure drop is higher. Toestimate the pressure drop, thefollowing method can be used:

P = C . (L – V) . K2

where:

P = Pressure drop, PaC = Vane design factor

V-V style, C = 10VH-1 style, C = 15VH-2 style, C = 20

Typically, the pressure drop will be inthe range of 0.2 – 0.8 kPa (approx 20to 80 mm water gauge).

Fine Mist RemovalRemoval of very small droplets can beachieved using a two stage misteliminator by fitting a mesh pad to theupstream face of the unit to coalescedroplets as small as 4 to 5 micronsinto droplets in the size range whichare easily removed by the vaneseparator.

Add the prefix M- to the relevantAlphaMIST vane style for a two stagemesh/vane mist eliminator.

Highspeed SME Construction

The installed unit consists of special separating elements fixed on a tray withopenings for draining the separated liquid. Where low turndown is required (belowapprox 30%) it can be used with with a wire mesh pre-coalescer.

Each separating element consists of an outer tube with integral swept inlet nozzlefitted with a special swirler internally. In this region the gas and liquid droplets areaccelerated at high speed into a cyclonic swirl so that the liquid droplets are flung tothe tube walls where they impinge and are swept upwards with the gas. The top ofthis element is supplied with a centrifugal separator cap which captures the liquidand sends it falling to the tray deck outside the element tube.

Multi Cyclone Element Construction

The installed unit consists of special separating elements fixed between twopartition plates with openings for gas risers and the separated liquid. Where lowturndown is required (below approx 40%) we recommend a secondary gas/liquidcoalescer device is installed.

Each cyclone element consists ofan outer tube with integral sweptinlet nozzle to initiate the spin.

In the initial region the inlet fluid isaccelerated at high speed into acyclonic swirl so that the liquiddroplets and solids are flung to thetube wall where they impinge andare swept downwards with the gas.

The core of this element is fittedwith a central vortex finder/gasoutlet pipe so that the gas reversesits flow to rise up this tube, leavingbehind the liquid and solidcontaminants that cling to thecyclone wall.

These contaminants continue theirpath downwards into the taperedsection of the cyclone where theyexit into the lower chamber of thevessel for drainage

The MCE elements are available in a range of materials including carbon steel,stainless steels and higher alloys.
