Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose

To gain understanding that wisdom may be vouchsafed to me. To develop and prize health and vigor of body. To cultivate acquaintance with many whom I meet. To cherish friendships with but a chosen few and to study

the perfecting of those friendships. To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world’s work, in the community where I am placed, because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership

multiplied.

To honor my home, my country, my religious faith. To hold truth inviolable, sincerity essential, kindness invaluable. To possess high ideals and to attain somewhat unto them. This shall be my purpose that those

who know me may esteem Alpha Gamma Delta for her attainments, revere her for her purposes, and love her for her womanhood.

Mission of New Member Education (NME)

The mission of Zeta Beta chapter’s new member education program primarily is to develop and educate new members according to the Alpha Gamma Delta purpose. We also wish to familiarize new members with the by-laws and customs of Alpha Gamma Delta and our chapter. We will help them understand the customs of Lehigh and our chapter’s unique involvement in the Greek system. We will strive to initiate effective communication among the new member class and between the new member class and active members of our chapter. Most importantly, we will provide new members with a memorable and enjoyable experience that will make them as comfortable as possible in their new home, Alpha Gamma Delta.

Alpha Gamma Delta Hazing Policy

Alpha Gamma Delta cares about each and every one of our members. That is why Alpha Gamma Delta has a zero tolerance policy towards hazing of any kind. Alpha Gamma Delta's official hazing policy is as follows: "Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created intentionally, whether on or off Fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Such activities and situations include creation of excessive fatigue, physical or psychological shocks; wearing apparel publicly which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and jokes; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; late night sessions which interfere with scholastic activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with the Alpha Gamma Delta Constitution and Standing Rules, The Ritual or Fraternity policy, or the regulations and policies of the educational institution, state or province. Hazing by individual members, new members or chapters of Alpha Gamma Delta is prohibited. For chapters, failure to comply with this Standing Rule shall result in disciplinary action. For individual members and new members, failure to comply with this Standing Rule shall be deemed non-support of the standards of the Fraternity and shall result in disciplinary action."

Expectations of New Members

New members will be expected to attend all mandatory events. Mandatory events include ritual, Alpha Experience programming, and events that all active members are required to attend. All other events will be optional for new members. In order to be initiated, all new members must complete the Fourteen Pearls Program, which includes their completion of fourteen individual applications relevant to the Purpose that they will decide for themselves, and the Alpha Experience Program, mandated by Alpha Gamma Delta International Headquarters. New members must pass the Fraternity Education Exam, and complete GreekLifeEDU. New members will always be welcomed and encouraged to spend time with active sisters. They will always be permitted to join active members at the chapter house for meals, studying, watching a movie, etc.

Expectations of Active Members

Active members will be expected to take a primary role in the new member education process. They will be expected to familiarize themselves with the NME plan prior to recruitment. They will be invited to join new members in all activities. They will be expected to make the new members feel welcome. Hazing will

NOT be tolerated. Any sister caught or accused of hazing will immediately come before Executive Council, at which time disciplinary action will be taken.

Expectation of Alumnae

Alumnae will be invited to join our chapter for all activities during the new member education process. They will be encouraged to review the NME plan prior to recruitment and provide any feedback they may have. Alumnae will not be allowed to haze and must adhere to the same policies set forth by Alpha Gamma Delta and Lehigh University.

Sister-Mother Program

Eligible sister-mothers will be assigned their sister-daughters on Bid Day. This will be revealed to the new members during the pledging ceremony. According to Alpha Gamma Delta, and consistent with the values of our chapter, we encourage our new sister-mothers to accomplish the following:

Know and understand her sister-daughter and how to communicate with her effectively Take every opportunity for an exchange of ideas and discussion Give her sister-daughter a sense of belonging by strengthening the relationship between her sister-

daughter and herself, all collegiate members and alumnae Cultivate in her sister-daughter a sense of responsibility within the Fraternity and an understanding

of its requirements Assist her sister-daughter to understand the new member program Encourage sound attitudes in her sister-daughter toward her Fraternity sisters, other students and

life in general Familiarize her sister-daughter with chapter or campus customs and procedures.

During the fall semester all eligible sister-mothers will be required to complete a questionnaire and reflect on what the responsibilities of a sister-mother are in order to better improve their abilities as a mentor and resource for their sister-daughter.

Interactions with other Chapters and Campus Organizations

New members will be expected to act respectfully towards all others on campus. They should live by the Alpha Gamma Delta purpose at all times, particularly when they are interacting with others. They will be encouraged to attend non-Greek events, such as sporting events, philanthropy events, lectures, and other campus-wide events in order to associate with other Greek chapters as well as non-Greek organizations on campus. Each week they will receive an update of happenings on campus so they can learn about all the great things Lehigh has to offer and attend what interests them. Activities with other sororities, fraternities, and non-Greek organizations will take place throughout the new member education period, in order to encourage new members to meet a variety of new people on Lehigh’s campus.

New Member Education Plan

Ongoing Projects

Family Trees New members will utilize their Sister-Mothers to trace their Greek “families” back as far as they can. They will create a visual to hang in the chapter house of their lineage and what each alumna is now doing so that other members can become more familiar with the lives of Zeta Beta alumnae. The new member who traces her “family” back the furthest will receive an Alpha Gam-themed prize. Get-to-Know-You New members and sisters will get to know each other through various activities. Sisters will be expected to attend new member activities in order to give new members opportunities to get to know the sisters. Both

new members and sisters will collect fun facts from each other and work toward finding out at least one thing that they have in common, to help them start to remember each other. This will be a fun way for new members and all chapter members to learn something new about sisters. AGDZB Groups and Sisterhood Circles These are two programs that our chapter has to keep all sisters involved and to foster communication and relationships in our chapter. AGDZB groups are five groups that our chapter is split into so that we can ensure that campus events are well attended. For example, a speaker on campus may be an A group event, so all A sisters would be required to attend the event or find a replacement. Our new members will be placed in these groups in order to encourage them to attend events, get to know older sisters, and understand the programming expectations of our chapter. Our organization uses sisterhood circles as a way to meet with a group of chapter members whom one may not be able to interact with on a daily basis. Circles happen once a month before chapter and we discuss what is happening in everyone’s lives, what part of the Alpha Gamma Delta experience they are in and what it means to them, and any other updates in their lives. New members will also be placed in these so that they can get to know older sisters better from the beginning. Energizers Each new member meeting will begin with a short “energizer.” This could be an icebreaker, stretches, or a quick dance party. The new members will be able to choose what energizer they want to do each day. New members, Kerry, Caroline, and Rachel will also all recite the Alpha Gamma Delta purpose, Greek alphabet, and sing the Lehigh alma mater, and the Alpha Gam song of the week at the beginning of each meeting so that all new members can start to remember these important songs and aspects of being in Alpha Gamma Delta. This will get everyone excited to be there and ready to do fun Alpha Gam activities! Sorority Education New member education will include Alpha Gamma Delta history and chapter history so that every new member is familiar with the traditions and history of Alpha Gamma Delta and Zeta Beta chapter. Every night before programming begins we will recite the Greek alphabet, Alpha Gamma Delta purpose, and sing some of the “10 songs every Alpha Gam should know.” We will be able to teach new members eight of the ten songs during New Member Education because two are not able to be learned until initiated. This is to ensure that every member of Zeta Beta is able to sing the songs when attending Alpha Gamma Delta convention or other events. New Member Class Dinners New members will be encouraged to eat dinner with each other at the campus dining halls each day. They will coordinate a time and place that works for the most people, and if they choose to do so, they will eat dinner together. They will also be encouraged to invite their friends that are not in AGD to come to dinner, so that all new members can all get to know the friends of their fellow NMC members. Lehigh Spirit Throughout New Member Education, we will encourage new members to attend Lehigh sporting events as a group. Our chapter has been working on increasing attendance at sporting events and other campus activities to create a unified campus community and we hope to instill this initiative in our new members. Activities Points Our chapter utilizes an activities points system that rewards sisters who attend chapter events, are a part of campus organizations, or do activities relating to the purpose. To help smooth the transition from new member to initiated sister, new members will be asked to fill out activities sheets in January and February like all sisters do. Ellen Weich, our activities coordinator, will teach the new members about our system and walk them through how to fill out the sheet.

Scholarship Plan

New members will work closely with our Vice President Scholarship, Savannah Boylan, to develop a personalized scholarship plan. Through the scholarship plan implemented during NME, new members will be introduced to scholarship programs and incentives available to all sisters.

Each new member will also be paired with a “Scholarly Squirrel.” This is usually a junior or senior sister in a similar major who can act as a mentor and guide in choosing classes, preparing for exams, and interacting with professors. We pair new members with juniors or seniors because they have more experience in their respective majors. The new member will be paired with her scholarly squirrel early on in the new member period and meet with her every other week throughout the new member period and after to make sure that the new member is doing well with her schoolwork. New members will be put into small groups based on their first semester GPA. Depending on GPA, the groups will have different requirements regarding study hours. If a new member has a GPA close to our minimum for initiation, Savannah will meet with her regularly to make sure that her schoolwork is going well with the extra time demands of New Member Education.

New members will also log their study hours using HoursTracker, an application that our chapter uses. This is to help them get acquainted with systems and programs that the chapter uses. This scholarship plan will help to instill a devotion to education and academia, some of the areas we, at Zeta Beta, value most in our new members and sisters.

Week 1

“To gain understanding that wisdom may be vouchsafed to me.”

Sunday, January 12 Chapter house, 5-8 p.m. New members will receive their bids! New members will be invited to the Chapter House for dinner, AGD trivia, and chapter pictures. They will get a “bid day buddy” which is an upperclassman that will hang out with them during the night to make them feel more comfortable. They will meet with Kerry, Caroline, Rachel, and Kelsey to receive an introduction to new member education, Zeta Beta chapter, and questions will be addressed. New members will fill out an information sheet for Kerry’s records. There will be photo booths and ice breakers to celebrate bid day and for the new members to meet sisters. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Collaborative Connections bLueprint foundation. This will be the New Members’ first opportunity to bond with each other as well as the older girls of Alpha Gamma Delta. They will have one-on-one time with their bid day buddy as well as group bonding time during dinner and AGD trivia. Monday, January 13 Chapter house 6-7 p.m. Caroline and Rachel will facilitate icebreakers to help the new members get to know each other. Shannon will introduce all financial information. Kerry will explain Alpha Experience and Kelsey will speak about our chapter. Local ice skating rink 7-9 p.m. New members will be invited to go to a local ice skating rink to start to get to know each other. All initiated sisters will be invited to come if they would like. We will also have hot chocolate and doughnuts as snacks. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Collaborative Connections bLueprint foundation. The New Member Class will just be getting to know each other. Bonding activities such as ice breakers and ice skating are perfect opportunities to enhance teamwork and communication skills between all new members.

Tuesday, January 14 Chapter house 6-7:30 p.m. Savannah will facilitate the Scholarship 101 program with the new members. After the program, all of the girls who are scholarly squirrels will come down to meet with their respective new member and discuss her scholarship plans and goals. The new members will elect new member positions, including a President, Social Coordinator, Ritual Coordinator, Secretary, and Historian within their new member class. New members will create and decorate visuals with their fast facts that will hang in the kitchen for sisters to be able to start to get to know the new members. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Creative Curiosity bLueprint foundation. This day is all about the importance of academics and our scholarly expectations for the new members. Scholarly squirrels will meet their respective new member. The elder member will be available to provide advice since the two will most likely have the same major. Wednesday, January 15 Chapter house 6-7:30 p.m. Erica Budway, our risk manager, will meet with the new members to discuss our chapter’s risk management policy and will facilitate a session based on the “Own It” Alpha Gam risk management themed conference that she attended last summer. New members will participate in a goal setting workshop, facilitated by the Office of Student Leadership and Development. They will set two goals as a New Member Class that they will decide on as a group. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Professional Growth & Success and Intellectual Development bLueprint foundation. Because of the greater responsibility placed on a single member, the chapter feels it important to teach new members to hold themselves accountable. Being responsible for one’s own actions shows professional growth and maturation. The Goal Setting Workshop will teach the necessity for setting goals. Setting goals emphasizes striving for success not only in school, but also in work and extracurricular activities. Thursday, January 16 New members will be free to spend their time as they wish. They will be encouraged to log study hours or spend time at the Chapter house. bLueprint: Since there are no events required for this day, the bLUeprint foundation for this day is Identity Development. New Members will be free to spend their time as they please whether it is simply relaxing or doing homework. Friday, January 17 Chapter house 6-7 p.m. Pledge service New members will participate in the Formal Pledge Service, an AGD ritual which includes the reveal of their sister-mother, following which they are invited to dinner with their lineage. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Collaborative Connections bLueprint foundation. On this day, new members will be able to bond with their sister-mother and with their lineage, starting what will hopefully be a friendship that will last a lifetime.

Saturday, January 18 Beth Gallant’s House 6 p.m.-10 a.m. New members will be spending the night at the house of Zeta Beta alumna, Beth Gallant. Beth will serve the girls dinner and snacks, and they will spend time getting to know one of our most active alumnae. The sleepover will commence with ice breaker activities provided to new members by the Office of Student Leadership and Development. An example of such activities is Two Truths and a Lie- “Give the group some time to write down two things about themselves that are true, and one thing that is a lie. Each group member will then share these facts about themselves and the rest of the group has to figure out which fact is actually a lie.” Following this activity, all new members who feel comfortable should share a story about what is important to them in life. This could be a story about the new member’s fondest memory, about the hardest thing the new member has ever done, about a time the new member was proud of herself, or any other such story the new member would like to share. From that point on, the topic of conversation can be determined by the new members, and anyone who would like to go to sleep may do so. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Collaborative Connections bLueprint foundation. While the new members will spend the majority of the evening doing fun activities together, they will have ample time to get to know Beth Gallant, an active alumna. This will be a great opportunity for new members to meet and talk to a sister.

Week 2

“To develop and prize health and vigor of body.” Songs: Chums and Fraternity

Sunday, January 19 New members will be free to spend their time as they wish. They will be encouraged to log study hours or spend time at the Chapter house. bLueprint: Since there are no events required for this day, the bLUeprint foundation for this day is Identity Development. Kelsey Yevak, our chapter president, will speak to the new members about our chapter and her position. New members and initiated sisters will watch the “You’re Always Wearing your Letters” video and then discuss why they joined our chapter and the importance of representing it. After, they will split into different groups and create dances with 90s music. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Creative Curiosity and Identity Development bLueprint foundation. The video is a great time for each new member to reflect on why they personally decided to rush and join Alpha Gamma Delta, to realize what they truly value about being in a sorority, and to understand the importance of self-care and representation.

Tuesday, January 21 Chapter house 6-8 p.m. Break the Silence member and AGD sister, Emily Furiga, will facilitate a Break the Silence presentation for the new members of our chapter and for Zeta Tau Alpha’s new members. New members will be invited to join sisters at a yoga class held in our living room to learn different ways to “develop and prize health and vigor of body.” bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Inclusive Leadership and Identity Development bLueprint foundations. The Break the Silence presentation fits into the Inclusive Leadership section. The presentation encourages the power of women and unethical situations that are prevalent on college campuses in regard to sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and harassment. The yoga portion fits into the Inclusive Leadership section because Alpha Gamma Delta will invite Zeta Tau Alpha to stay and bond through yoga. The yoga portion also fits into the Identity Development section because it encourages self-care through relaxation and exercise. Wednesday, January 22 New members will be free to spend their time as they wish. They will be encouraged to log study hours or spend time at the Chapter house. bLueprint: Since there are no events required for this day, the bLUeprint foundation for this day is Identity Development. Week 3

“To cultivate acquaintance with many whom I meet. To cherish friendships with but a chosen few and to study the perfecting of those friendships.”

Songs—Reverie and Pledge song Sunday, January 26 New members will be free to spend their time as they wish. They will be encouraged to log study hours or spend time at the Chapter House. bLueprint: Since there are no events required for this day, the bLUeprint foundation for this day is Identity Development. New Members will be free to spend their time as they please whether it is simply relaxing or doing homework. Monday, January 27 Chapter house 6-7:30 p.m. Ceremony All sisters, including new members will gather at the chapter house to complete the History 101 program. Sisters and new members will then split up into teams and create skits about the Alpha Gam founders. New members will be introduced to the family tree activity. The Campus Relations team, which consists of the Vice President Campus Relations, Activities Coordinator, and Public Relations Coordinator, will discuss their positions and work in the chapter. Ellen Weich, our activities coordinator, will also introduce the activity points system and teach our new members how to track their points. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Inclusive Leadership and Creative Curiousity bLueprint foundation. By watching an educational video that outlines the history of Alpha Gamma Delta all the way back to the founding, new members will learn the founder’s intentions, about the AGD philanthropy, and how the purpose relates to all actions. This day is largely about discussing many of the positions within Alpha Gamma Delta. New Members might find positions they are interested in and ponder running for that position in the succeeding election. Tuesday, January 28 New members will be free to spend their time as they wish. They will be encouraged to log study hours or spend time at the Chapter House. bLueprint: Since there are no events required for this day, the bLUeprint foundation for this day is Identity Development. New Members will be free to spend their time as they please whether it is simply relaxing or doing homework. Wednesday, January 29 Chapter house 6-8 p.m. New members will participate in a speed dating session with the seniors in our chapter. This will be a great way for them to get to know them better and get some advice from the oldest members of our chapter, who have lots of advice and can serve as mentors to our new members.

There are a lot of sisters in NMC 12 going abroad, so we are going to prepare a video beforehand of the abroad sisters so that the new members can get to know them better. Also, some abroad sisters will try to Skype with new members if possible. Likewise, so that the girls who are abroad can get to know the new members, the juniors who are at Lehigh and the new members will put together a video to send to those who are abroad. They will set it up maybe like a Letterman-type interview show and plan it while eating dinner together then film it. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Collaborative Connections bLueprint foundation. Through the collaborative event with our seniors, our new members will learn from their experience at Lehigh and build a foundation for strong relationships with our senior class. Making the video is a great opportunity for new members to become closer with the junior members. Thursday, January 30 Chapter house 6-7:30 p.m. The new members and juniors will finish recording the video, if necessary. The new members will bring their laptops to the chapter house and work on GreekLifeEDU. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Collaborative Connections bLueprint foundation. This is a great opportunity for new members to bond with the juniors. Also, it fits into the Professional Growth and Success foundation because GreekLifeEDU gives them tools that are necessary to be healthy and safe individuals. Friday, January 31 Location on campus 4-6 p.m. New members and sisters will participate in a poverty simulation with Kappa Alpha Theta. After the program, our chapter will brainstorm one way in which we can help those living in poverty in our local area. bLueprint: This fits into the Collaborative Connections bLueprint foundation, as our members will be meeting and working with members of Kappa Alpha Theta and will be trying to help connect us to the Bethlehem community. Saturday, February 1 Chapter house 12-2 p.m. New members will have to bake a cake while half cannot use one hand and the other half cannot speak. This is a great communication activity. While the cake is baking, the new members will review AGD history with Caroline, Rachel, and Kerry in preparation for their test the following week. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Professional Growth and Success bLueprint foundation. Having half of the new members use one hand and half not speak will encourage the new members to create a support system.

On Thursday, all sisters will attend dinner at the Chapter House during which the “Secret Squirrels” will be revealed. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Collaborative Connections bLueprint foundation. This is yet another bonding experience. Each new member will talk to sisters in the house and learn more about each one while trying to figure out their secret squirrels. Thursday, February 6 Chapter house 6-7:30 p.m. Several older members of our chapter will put on a fashion show of what clothes and appearance are required for badge attire, business casual, business formal, and when wearing letters. We hope this will help our new members understand the expectations when dressing for certain events and also help them when attending campus events or interviews. Afterwards, new members will find out who their secret squirrels are and have dinner with them at the chapter house. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Professional Growth and Success bLueprint foundation. “To possess high ideals and to attain somewhat unto them.”

During this week, new members will reflect on their time thus far as a part of AGD. They will reflect on their pasts and look towards their futures. They will be highly encouraged to spend their spare time at the Chapter House, since they will be initiated at the end of the week, and this will become their house! Throughout the week, they will be encouraged to spend time together and will create a PowerPoint, similar to a scrapbook, to present at Feast of Roses for sisters and parents. They will also work with their Sister-Mothers to complete their family trees. Sunday, February 16 New members will be free to spend their time as they wish. They will be encouraged to log study hours or spend time at the Chapter House. bLueprint: Since there are no events required for this day, the bLUeprint foundation for this day is Identity Development. Monday, February 17 Chapter house 6-8 p.m. New members and sisters will work together to create an Alpha Gam musical using some of the songs that they learned over the last few weeks and other Alpha Gam songs and will perform it for the rest of the chapter.

New members and members of NMC 11 will participate in an “AGD cafe.” They will rotate tables and get to meet various members of NMC 11. At each table, snacks, conversation prompts, and other props representing AGD and our chapter will be set out. Sisters and new members will have 10 minutes to discuss what those items mean to them or to discuss the conversation prompts. NMC 11 members will be encouraged to use this as an opportunity to share what they’ve learned and gained from their time in AGD to the new members. bLueprint: The activities this day fit into the Collaborative Connections and Professional Growth and Success bLueprint foundations.
