Zu Alpenfest®!Willkommen

Willkommen and Welcome to the 49th annual Alpenfest® and a week of fun for the whole family to enjoy “A Celebration of Summer.” This is truly a community celebration and we invite visitors to join in the fun!

We kick off Alpenfest® with the Honors Luncheon on Tuesday; the Open-ing Ceremonies and the Queens Pageant that evening; followed by the Burning of the Boog, when all of your troubles go up in smoke, insuring beautiful weather during the festival!

The Walking Parade and World’s Largest Coffee Break highlight the morning on Wednesday. The high energy Young Americans perform on the Alpenstage at Noon. The Alpenstage features Jared Mahone and Gaylord’s own Lauren Duski on Wednesday evening, rising country star Brian Lorente on Thursday evening and returning favorites The Elders on Friday evening and Endless Summer closing out this year’s festival on the Alpenstage Saturday night.

Every year Alpenfest® highlights free food, free entertainment, and fun for the whole family, with games and contests for everyone. Wear your Alpenfest® pin with pride and enjoy all of the activities.

Stroll down the Alpenstrasse full of crafts and unique gift ideas. Enjoy lunch or dinner on Ethnic Alley, featuring many local restaurants and civic clubs and groups.

The crowd favorite Grand Parade is Saturday at Noon, featuring Rosco the Clown. Be sure to stay after the parade for performances by the Petoskey Steel Drum Band, Grand Traverse Pipe & Drums, and a Disney® Princess.

On behalf of the city of Gaylord, the Gaylord Area Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer Alpenfest® board, we invite you to share and enjoy this year’s Alpenfest® 2013 “A Celebration of Summer”.

LAMPION PARADEThe Lampion parade originated in Switzerland where it also coincides with the burning of the Boogg during their Spring Celebration. Parsnips are hollowed out, and designs are cut into the sides. Next the lantern is then placed into a macramé basket, and a candle is placed inside. At Alpenfest®, children and adults cut designs into his sides and top of a box. The designs are then covered with colored tissue paper or plastic wrap. A flashlight is inserted providing light as well as a handle to carry the lantern. Everyone carries their lampion in a procession that takes the Boogg to its burning site.

LEGEND OF THE BOOGGBoogg, a giant snowman of cotton wool, symbolizes winter to the Swiss, and they burn the statue yearly with colorful pageantry to celebrate the beginning of spring. In Gaylord, the Burning of the Boogg has taken on new meaning and added delight. Alpine Village residents and visitors jot down their troubles and problems on slips of paper and then place them inside the Boogg. The Boogg is then ignited, and everyone’s troubles go up in smoke! Now all canenjoy the fun and festivities of Alpenfest®!

INCLEMENT WEATHERIn the event of inclement weather…all main stage scheduled events will be moved to the Gaylord Evangelical Free Church. Please listen to Eagle 101.5 for details.

THE LEGEND OF HERR GESSLERAccording to legend, Gessler was an evil ruler in Switzerland and Austria in the 13th

century. He forced everyone in the area to bow down to his hat as a symbol of authority. Gessler would leave his hat in the square and all those who passed it would be forced to bow down. When William Tell, who had been hunting in the mountains with his son when Gessler came into power, came into the square he did not bow down to the feathered hat. Herr Gessler became so enraged that he arrested Tell and his son. As punishment, Tell had to shoot an apple off his son’s head. Tell succeeded and then turned his arrow on Gessler. Tell was able to overthrow Gessler and become the new ruler. Somehow Gessler was able to escape to Gaylord a few hundred years later. He now tries to ruin Alpenfest® for everyone by demanding quiet and that passers-by bow down to his hat. However, the Alpine Village wins over the evil tyrant with the sweet lyrics of “Edelweiss.”
