Aloha Hive BUZZ Winter 2010 Greetings Hivers! I hope you enjoy this edition of the Buzz. It was fun for me reading the messages from the 2009 Unit Heads, counselors and campers. I smiled as I was brought back to last summer and all the fun we had: great surprises, silly games, challenges learning new skills and succeeding and so much more. I am already dreaming of Hive 2010! It is also fun reading about all the exciting activities and adventures you all have been up to this fall and winter. From playing all different sports, being in play’s, traveling and even visiting and staying in touch with each other, we may leave Hive in Fairlee, Vermont, but our memories stay close to our hearts all year long. We are a very special community of women. I have been on the road seeing many of you and introducing new girls to camp. What fun it has been listening to so many of you let new campers know just how special Hive is. So often when any of us try to explain to new families how wonderful Hive is, the last sentence often is “You just have to be there to understand!” And being back next summer with new campers and so many returning campers, we will all feel Hive a little bit deeper; we will strengthen relationships even more and feel even more connected to our amazing summer home! How many days???? In addition to all the work I do as a Director during the winter, I have been having fun snow shoeing and doing some cross country skiing. I often head over to camp where I have watched our summer home become covered in snow and the lake freeze over as if it is an extension to our property – a giant playfield! These changes will go back to our lush green forest and fields and sparkling lake for the summer. Other changes are happening too. Some I want to be a surprise for you – we’ve created new places to rest, explore and play. Are you curious? And a change I want you all to know about is that the pine trees on the Dancing Green were all taken down this winter. Remember we talked about that at camp this summer? Unfortunately those beautiful, tall trees had gotten too old to remain on the lake and be safe to us all. It looks very different and this summer we all think about how we will recreate this beautiful part of camp: maybe plant new tree’s, leave some space open or plant flowers. We will all think and talk about this during the summer to come. For now I hope you all enjoy the rest of your winter and that you have a wonderful spring. Before we know it we will all be back together singing in the Comb, swimming in the lake, hiking beautiful mountains and spending special times together on Aloha Hill and at Rainbow’s End. Close your eyes and picture being together again; a warm smile comes across my face every time I do. Aloha and Cheers to you All!! Kathy Plunkett Director, Camp Aloha Hive

School is going great!! The other day my class went kayaking, and also some of my friends & I slid around in the mud and got very muddy!! There are plenty of festivals going on around here in Western Massachusetts. At the moment the sport that I’m into is Field Hockey!! Aloha,Claudia Danford

I am busy! A busy-bee I should say :) I am in a production of The Sound of Music and got the leading role of Maria! Yay! I am on a premier soccer team which is fun, and playing tennis. And at school, let’s just say “STRESSFUL.” But it’s all worth it in the end! Your soon-to-be Hilander,Zoe Clark

A few weeks into her 5th grade, Kira Lonsdale broke her right arm! She is in good spirits and is progressing well. The crazy part is two of her cousins, Tasha & Elena, broke their arms at camp this summer. If that wasn’t enough, her father and great-grandmother also broke their arms recently. That makes 5 in one family!

School is going great! I’m playing soccer and hockey. I’m also in the school play, Zeusical! I MISS Hive SO MUCH! I can’t believe next year is my last year! I can’t wait to see you next year! Love,Erika Hulbeck

Dear Dolphins!!I am sitting writing to you from a snowy, cold Fairlee Vemont!! I decided to take a brief trip across the ocean from England to visit Kathy Plunkett and see a very different-looking Aloha Hive that is currently covered in snow and ice! It was quite strange standing in a snow-filled Dolphin Dell and whilst it was a beautiful sight it was no where near as beautiful as when it is filled with all of you running around, playing on the see-saws or on tetherball with one another! Those of you who were second session or full last summer will remember writing a letter to yourselves as the summer came to an end. I hope you enjoy reading those things that made last summer so very special. However, this got me to thinking about letters. Letters are wonderful, a huge part of camp whether it be a letter home or a letter to your counselor or a letter sent on a pully system across the dell from tent to tent during silent rest hour! They are a great way of communicating and sharing the joys of a summer at Hive and I even began to feel a little dissapointed that I hadn’t written a letter to myself at the end of summer 2009! I wanted to remember dancing on the docks in a tutu, cook-out breakfasts on the dancing green with my wonderful tent family, our fabulous Egyptian unit party, the warm and fuzzies we made during unit time, special moments at rainbows end, milking the goats, our gypsy trip and the endless games of camoflauge we played in the dell! As I thought about it though, I realised letters truly are wonderful but really all you need to do is close your eyes, look deep inside your mind and all those memories of friends, fun and laughter are there ready and waiting for you anytime you want a little piece of hive magic to help you through the winter or spring. Plus the best thing of all is you can spend as many hours as you like imagining what next summer will bring, wondering who will be your counselor and tent mates, what departments you will visit, where will you take your tent family overnight and just how many farm animals will Kathy Plunkett have this time! So my dear Dolphins it is goodbye for now, keep looking inside those memories and looking forward to June and I will see you in a few short months. I will probably be on the docks, wearing a pink tutu and singing Jeremiah was a bullfrog at the

top of my lungs, waiting for you all to arrive!

Until then, lots of love and hugs to all of you,Lucy Reynard

Dear Anti-Qs!Well, I live in Boston now and guess what? It’s SNOWING!! I can’t help but imagine what Lake Fairlee must look like—I bet the Kanaka’s have built some pretty sweet igloos!

I have to say I’m getting used to living in a big city and riding the T (that’s Charlie and the MTA for those of you who didn’t already know!) to work everyday. Recently, I’ve spent the majority of my 30-minute T ride planning for camp—mainly trying to determine the next pop song to learn on my guitar. Watch out Rihanna, Umbrella is old news! I’m thinking a little Justin Bieber will be a great addition to 2010, what do you guys think? Remember our Taylor Swift sing along in Wilderness? (I’m not sure that can be beat!)

Anyway, I really like being in a new place and having new experiences but sometimes I do silly things that make me think of camp. For example, in September I wore my lumberjack overalls to work! I’m pretty sure they were a hit! I also went to the Topsfield Fair where they had racing pigs! I wonder if Kathy Plunkett will let us teach our pigs how to race! Most of all, I can’t stop thinking about how impressed I was this past summer with all of my Anti-Qs and I have especially high hopes for 2010! Miss you all dearly and can’t wait to see you in a couple of months!

Lots of love,Madeline

Aloha Lolanders!!! Greetings pirates, indians, lost boys, animals, flying children and of course Fairies!!! I miss all of you dearly. I don’t think there is a day that goes by that I don’t tell a camp story to one of my fellow actors in the company. Even though it is much different to wake up every morning to a palm tree outside my window, rather than a pine tree outside my shack, I am having a grand time working in Florida at the Florida Repertory Theatre. I was thrilled to receive my calendar and see a picture of all of the Lolander counselors painted swim cap to toes every color of the rainbow! It reminded me of all of our fun times we had last summer. Those blueberries we picked were so yummy! We ate so many, I was afraid I’d have to explain to Kathy how all of the Lolanders had turned blue! I also don’t think I’ll ever forget how excited we all were to take a mystery adventure to the park that looked like a castle where we explored every corner together. There were so many magical things that happened last summer! Camp was taken to Hogwarts, the Renaissance, and we flew to Neverland.with the help of a few Kanakas. I cannot wait to see what magic will unfold in the summer of 2010, what with more whimsical happenings on the Hive stage, such as dancing teapots and singing candlesticks, I am already predicting another summer of enchantment nestled among the

mountains. Once more, we will be together in a place called Hive; much like another place I told of, called Neverland. I hope it to be, “nicely crammed, with hardly any room between one adventure and another.” Best wishes for spring, and sweet dreams of the summer to come!

Love and Aloha,

Jackie Schram

Aloha Elfins! Hello, 2009 Elfins! I hope you’re all having a great year. I miss your

smiles and your silly songs! Does anybody know what the Kanakas do in the winter? I imagine that they build birch-bark sleds to race down the

snowy hillside, they twirl under Friendship Bridge on their tiny ice skates, and they warm themselves by cozy fires which are always heating water for hot chocolate. Or do they fly south for

the winter? They might be sunning themselves on some faraway beach, splashing in the waves, and drinking pink lemonade from chilly little glasses. Meanwhile, all over the country, last summer’s Elfins are

humming camp songs as they lace up their boots, dreaming of s’mores while they sit in math class...

I’m keeping busy in Massachusetts, spending lots of time with my family. I’ve been in touch with some of

my camp friends, meeting up for dinner and exchanging long letters. Right now I’m starting to pack for a very exciting trip: soon I’ll leave

for Israel, where I’m going to be volunteering on a farm for three months. I hope my goat-milking skills will come in handy there—thank you Mocha, Latte, and Cappuccino!

Goats, pigs, and chickens may be in my future, and they’re in yours too—at Hive 2010! I can’t wait to see you all back on Lake Fairlee’s shore, singing and playing, hugging old friends and welcoming new ones. Do you remember the memory bracelets we made? There are big, special memories: a blueberry picking trip, letters to the Kanakas, decorating our hats, s’mores in the library fireplace, Elfin dress-up day, and Mississippi Mud…. and there are everyday memories, just as special: time with our tent families, singing in the Comb, working to improve our swimming strokes, kickball on the Playfield, challenging ourselves on the ropes course, learning to shoot arrows, playing on the S.S. Elfin.

We shared a busy, exciting summer. This year you’ll be Lolanders and Dolphins, and there’s even more fun waiting for you at Hive 2010!Love, and Aloha, Amanda

Hello Hilanders!!!I was walking back from the library to my dorm one night when it started to pour. I hadn’t expected the rain and as I started to get more and more drenched I somehow got to thinking about Hive. There is something about a rainstorm at Hive that captures what makes our community so special; campers pulling in tentmates’ beds during a rest hour rain shower, counselors leaving lunch to run up the hill and roll down tent flaps. Or my favorite, singing in the Comb together while it is raining outside.

I have to say that when I got to thinking about Hive I also got to thinking about the biggest Unit on the hillside: our games, Unit sings before tattoo, and of course many twins! What a summer we had! Who knew that cardboard boxes and an old tarp could become Yahtzee, or that you could play Go Fish with human “fish”? Our unit part definitely cleared up any questions about that. From human Bingo to Candyland, to Tic Tac Toe, I will forever think about our

Unit Party whenever I see a board game.

Games really were the Hilander theme for the summer with game shows (remember writing with chicken noodle soup letters?), and even snowman making contests (snow in August?)

I’ll never forget one of my favorite nights of camp, our unit overnight on Aloha Hill when some of our international counselors taught us how to make damper and we got to sleep under the pale moonlight and woke up to a birthday cake breakfast.

I have been busy at college finishing up my final year. I saw some Hivers at the open houses in New York, and had a 24-hour reunion with Catherine Bleakley while she was in transit from Spain to Australia (we even managed to make a snow man although I will admit we used real snow). I hope your year has been going well and I can’t wait to see each of you in 2010 for another best summer!

Aloha,Margaret Pennoyer

Dear Hivers,Greetings from Vermont! Matt, Bofoz and I moved up to Vermont in October and we are so happy to be

enjoying Vermont in all seasons. I took Bofoz for a walk across frozen Lake Fairlee and we saw camp

covered in snow! While we were looking across the lake I remembered seeing camp from the same

perspective during the Rainbow Trout while I was riding in the boat cheering along our fabulous swimmers!

Hopefully this summer I will be swimming the trout again! After we walked across the lake we hiked up

the Burma road and found a great surprise! There was a tree in the middle of the woods with an ornament

hanging from the branches. I guess the kanakas had their holiday celebration up

there. Hopefully it will still be there this summer and we will see it if we

take another gypsy trip. Can’t wait to be swimming in the lake,

building fires on the dancing green, taking canoe trips, and

finally having rest hour again! See you all there!

Aloha,Erin & BofozProgram Coordinators

Q. What do you get when you cross a stream and a brook?A. Wet feet.

Would you like to help us spread the message of the Alohas? We are always looking for ways to interest families in the value of camping and in our quality programs for children. Even families with children not yet ready for camp can begin to think about including a summer at Aloha, Hive or Lanakila in their future. If you know of families who might be interested in knowing more, we can send you brochures or a video. Or perhaps you might be willing to gather interested families together; we would be happy to come with slides and stories. Please contact one of the directors or [email protected].

A Buzz Poem by Amanda Strogoff, Elfin Unit HeadRead at Banquet 2009

I know you’ll miss camp when your T-shirts are dryAnd your mom does want to play “WAH!”Your pillows and sheets do not smell like old socks,And your bath tub it seems like a spa!

An alarm’s beep is nothing like reveilleChocolate cake is nothing like MUD!No pranks to pull - No parents days off-No playfield likely to flood.

You’ll have your T.V. and laptop maybe,You’ll drive everywhere in your car. You’ll shut off the light, climb in your bed at night,And see on your ceiling no star.

You are surrounded by walls! Where are the trees?Where are your tent mates to play?Where are the goats? You are ready to milk! Are there any counts for today?

You’ll think of Hive each time you riseAnd dress in green and whiteThink of us each time you scratchAn old mosquito bite.

And know that we are thinking too,Of all the fun we had with you!

Q. What do you get from a pampered cow?A. Spoiled milk.
