Aloha Hive BUZZ Winter 2009 Greetings Hivers, Near and Far! I hope this note finds you all well, having a great school year and enjoying a fun winter wherever you may be. Here in Vermont we have had LOTS of snow! I have been enjoying long snow shoes with Mini and Rocket over at Ohana Camp and Hive. It feels very strange to walk around Hive with just the crunching of my snow shoes; no laughter or chatter coming from Units! And then, I smile thinking about the coming summer when so many of you will return to reunite with friends, and when new campers will arrive to experience the magic of Hive for the first time. I cannot wait to see each and everyone one of you! As I traveled around this fall and winter, I had the pleasure of seeing many of you at Reunions and Open Houses. The gatherings provided us with the time to share memories from last summer and let new campers know all the fun and adventures that awaited them. The memories we shared included the excitement of Hive’s Birthday and Mississippi Mud, and fantastic all-camp games like Gold Rush. The coming summer will hold many of the same traditions and even a few new surprises for you all to enjoy. A day does not pass when I don’t think of another fun surprise for camp! The liquid sunshine of last summer seemed to encourage ALL of us and to fill us with positive energy. As a matter of fact, it presented opportunities I bet none of us ever thought were there: water aerobics along with sailing and kayaking on the playfield! The opportunities of camp are endless and it is one of things I love about each summer so much. Each day presents us with the chance to try something new, work in a department to improve skills, make new friends, and so much more. I hope you are even thinking now what opportunities you might want to take advantage of next summer. Maybe it is starting work on the Rover OR finishing up work on the Rover, trying a new department or improving your sailing or canoeing skills. The possibilities are limitless. In closing, I hope you all enjoy the news in this edition of the Buzz. Missing you all and I am always dreaming of Hive 2009! Aloha and Cheers, Kathy Plunkett, Hive Director

Alohafrom our HIVE Assistant Director

When I first worked at Hive (back in the day) my campers would tell me that the day they got home from camp they would begin The Countdown. Many of you know what that is: the number of days until the opening of camp the following summer. I then discovered that counselors do that too! And to this day, so do I.

Even though I’m thousands of miles away from Fairlee I often find things at school that remind me of activities at camp: Fridays in the lunchroom are often quesadilla day, but none can compare to Table 17’s cookout!! When I’m at dinner with my dorm’s community night, I often think of tent family cookouts that I’ve been part of—but none measure up to those at Hive! And Agatha Christie on the telly just can’t hold a candle to the Odds & Friends’ unit party mystery. A Whoopie Pie is always worth the wait!

I was thrilled when Margaret Pennoyer, Megan Streeter and Sinead Geraghty came to visit Nancy Hayden and me for Thanksgiving. Not only did it feel like a mini camp reunion, but we got to share a bit of England and America over a weekend that went much too quickly. We all went to Hampton Court Palace ice rink for some skating (faring much better than some of the previous female inhabitants. . . ).

We are now thinking up some more games for next summer’s O & F’s English evening—but keeping the really great ones like ladders, wellie toss, and the chocolate game (how much English candy can one bring through Customs?!).

Here’s counting down to June!

Dear Dolphins!!Well, it is cold and rainy in England at the moment, and all I can think of is how much I want to be at Hive experiencing a Beautiful Vermont Day of sunshine surrounded by the laughter and fun of each and every one of you!

I think and talk about camp ALL the time and when Allison Maryan visited me in England last month, we spent a lot of time talking about some amazing camp memories from 2008. We laughed about the Dolphin circus unit party complete with its very own elephant ride, and the day it rained so much we swam on the playing field! Of course the excitement of Hive’s Birthday and the ultimate Mississippi Mud messy lunchtime that is absolutely one of my favorite camp traditions. I love the surprise on every camper’s face and the happiness and excitement that fills the dining hall, I even love it when a mischievous counselor decides to spread some chocolate mud on my head! All these special events add to the fun of a summer at Hive but what I love most of all is the magic that fills the air each and every day as we run down the hill, dance on the swim docks, sing in the dining hall and have energetic, song-filled assembling in the Comb. Allison and I got so excited about the prospect of Hive 2009 we even dug out a couple of pairs of green shorts and tube socks and jumped around doing a particularly loud rendition of Rattlin’ Bog!

Since camp last year, I have been back in England, but I was lucky enough to visit Fairlee in the fall and saw a beautiful Hive covered in wonderful autumn leaves. However, it wasn’t quite the same without the chatter and buzz of a camp full of Hivers and as I walked around the Units, gazed at the lake and passed a closed costume room I could feel the excitement building already for summer 2009. I imagined the crazy outfits campers and counselors will conjure up for unit parties, the sound of swimming counselors singing ‘Jeremiah was a Bullfrog’ on the swim docks and the laughter and music that will drift out of the comb and fill the playing field and ears

of each of us as we enjoy another spectacular summer at Aloha Hive.

I am so excited to see all of you and to begin what I know will be another magical summer. It is only a few months away, so until then, I will continue thinking of you all, count down the days and probably continue to dig out my green and whites every now and then for a solo rendition of some camp songs in preparation for singing them all summer long with you! I cannot wait!

Hello my Anti-Q Darlings! What’s everyone been up to? I have been dodging slush puddles in Boston while humming camp songs to myself. I’ve also been super busy taking classes, starting a new job, and moving into a new apartment with my best friend. But I did manage to take a little vacation in November and go visit Jackie Schram and Alice in Tampa in November. Jackie and I also had a really good winter vacation. We got to hang out a lot while we were both in Massachusetts. We even went to visit Kathy in Fairlee! We went sledding in her front yard and had the best time! Being so close to Hive got me thinking about the incredible summer we had together...

Remember our Time Warp Unit Party? I am still so proud of all the great activities and hard work you guys put into it! I thought about our trip to the blueberry farm. I’m not sure who caused more troubles, the campers who were snacking on the berries or the counselors who were throwing them all over the place. And even now, months later, I still find myself doing the dance Madeline, Abbie, Charlotte and Annie made up for “Umbrella.” You all accomplished so much this summer! Overnights, hikes, marathons, musicals, record-breaking amounts of bobs!

I hope you are all getting excited for this summer! I hear Aloha is amazing! Keep sending those emails and letters loves, they absolutely make my day. I know until it warms up and I have my green shorts back on, I’ll be warming myself on the memory of all of you!

Love, Jessica Nickerson

Aloha Elfins! I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful winter, keeping warm and waiting for the next summer o’ fun ‘09 at Aloha Hive. I know I am keeping warm out here in Los Angeles, but it isn’t the same as the summers on Lake Fairlee. I miss the beautiful lake, swim lessons (of course), pajama parties of the S.S. Elfin (Land Ho!) and secret s’more nights at Kathy’s House. Ah, man…now I really miss camp!

Once camp ended, I went back to college in Boston, but was accepted into an Emerson program in Los Angeles, California (Quick, pull out a map and find it). Although it is far from Boston and even further from camp, I carry you all with me throughout the year and feel close to you! I have managed to keep in touch with a few camp friends, Madeline Williams (Yeah, Canoeing), Jessica Nickerson (Drama), Stephanie Ford (Go, Swimming) and even Charlotte de Wilde all the way over in England (Find that on the map too! It’s very small, but good things come in small packages!).

I think about camp a lot and talk about it even more. I love to tell about all the fun things I get to do during my summer vacations! All of our parties in, on and around the S.S. Elfin, the spectacular Fourth of July over at our brother camp Lanakila and our final night in Kathy’s House reading Where The Wild Things Are. That book will forever remind me of our AMAZING summer together as Elfins! We may have been small in number, but we were big in spirit!

So, stay warm darlings and enjoy the last half of the school year (yes, there is only half left). Think of the warm summer days, all the friends (new and old) and the summer that is Aloha Hive! I miss you all so much, but I’ll see you soon…

Hurry up summer ’09! Abbie Ladd

Aloha Lolanders!!! How are all of you doing? I hope you’re keeping nice and toasty warm during these winter months. Warm-ing up on the memories of Hive ‘08 and the thoughts of Hive ‘09!! I know in the winter I always dream about being back at Hive swimming in Lake Fairlee (or running around it), making baskets at Arts and Crafts, having a cookout on Aloha Hill and eating s’mores. I CAN’T wait ‘til Hive ‘09!!!

Since camp ended, I have kept very busy here in New York City working. I was lucky enough to see some camp friends, Kathy Plunkett, Kira Lonsdale, Elea-nor Wilcox, and Mercedes Baynes, at one of the NYC Open Houses. It was a lot of fun seeing each other and talking about camp to new Hivers!! I also got to spend a lovely weekend in Connecticut visiting Erin Jenkins and Bofuz!

I think about camp all the time and I’m always telling stories about the summer!! All my friends are jeal-ous I get to spend my summers at such a cool camp!! When Halloween came around I told everyone about our amazing Halloween Unit Party; I don’t think the dining hall ever looked so spooky. I couldn’t help but remember our strawberry picking trip when I went

apple picking this Fall. And every time I have mac and cheese I think about our unit overnight on Aloha Hill, with the cheesiest mac and cheese EVER!! But I think my favorite memory from the summer is all the camp weddings that took place!! Rob (my rock fiance) and I can’t wait for Hive ‘09 when we can finally get married. We’re thinking of having the reception on the SS Elfin and of course all of you are invited!!! Well, I hope all of you are having a fantastic school year, that you’re keeping warm in the chilly weather, and most important, that you’re planning for a fabulous summer back at Hive to celebrate Hive’s 95th birthday!!!

Until June, Aloha,-Linda January

Hello Hilanders!!!So, has anyone talked their parents into getting them a pet pig? I hope you’re all having a great year! The new year has been filled with memories of camp. I got my camp calendar which I tacked right above my desk so I get a daily dose of our 2008 summer. I lit my banquet candle on New Year’s, and I got a letter in the mail that I had written to myself during the summer. I hope you all enjoyed getting your letters. It reminded me how camp allows us to explore the person that we want to be. Gosh, I miss camp!!!

When I got my calendar, a slideshow of memories started playing in my mind. Playing American ball on the playfield, going for a night swim as a unit ;)) the dining hall decorations to congratulate the Rainbow Trout swimmers, the screams and smiles on Hive’s birthday and when Mississippi mud emerged from the kitchen, Rainbows End, s’mores, and singing in the Comb. My brother, Dewey and I, always reminisce about camp. During the holidays when I see my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, at least 85% of us have been to camp. Camp is such an amazing aspect of our lives that we all get to share. That’s why you all have to talk your siblings into coming to camp! You never understand the magic of camp until you go.

The Buzz on me is that I’ve been working at a physical therapy clinic, taking classes, and nannying for two families. I’m so lucky that when I leave camp I still get to spend time with kids who love pirates and monkeys just as much as I do! I’m also training for the Boston Marathon. As some of you may remember, I love making goals. At camp, my goals were to learn the harmonica and swim the Rainbow Trout. Accomplishing these made me feel like a million bucks!

Running all 26.2 miles of a marathon has always been in the back of my head and I thought this would be the perfect year to make it happen. Not only do I have to train in the snow and cold, but I have to raise $5,000! All of the money that I raise is going to Access Sport America*. We made a Sunday donation to this organization at camp. It’s an organization that helps kids and adults with physical and mental disabilities learn how to windsurf, canoe, kayak and bike. We’re so lucky to be healthy and able-bodied. Try and imagine going to camp in a wheelchair. It would be tough! When I worked for ASA, I helped kids in wheelchairs do all the fun activities that we do at camp!

What are some of your goals for the year?

Hive 2009 is on the horizon! Get psyched!

We are, we are, the HILANDERS.....

Aloha, Abby Schunk xoxo

Would you like to help us spread the message of the Alohas? We are always looking for ways to interest families in the value of camping and in our quality programs for children. Even families with children not yet ready for camp can begin to think about including a summer at Aloha, Hive or Lanakila in their future. If you know of families who might be interested in knowing more, we can send you brochures or a video.
