The Holiday season is upon us and I hope this letter finds everyone in the spirit! Here at Lahaina Intermediate I’m seeing a lot of holiday spirit, from door decorating to holiday spirit week - our teachers and students are enjoying their time leading up to Winter Recess. We’ve had a busy last few weeks, but before I get into all things going on at LIS I’d like to extend my heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to our very own Lahainaluna High School Football team for winning the Division II Hawaii State Football Championship for the 3rd year in a row! It was a heart-stopping and thrilling game to watch, and I couldn’t be prouder of our boys and their determination! Our 8th graders have been busy bees registering for their freshman year and learning about their high school pathways options. Every year at this time the process to prepare our eldest students for the next step begins. Complete with a tour of Lahainaluna High School campus, where they get to visit classrooms and meet the teachers, we do our best to make registering for their 9th grade year an organized and painless process for parents and a fun one for students. High school is right around the corner for our 8th graders and my wish for them is that they are excited and prepared for this next step. Speaking of bees, great job to all of our spelling bee participants! It was a close battle this year, with much excitement from the audience as well as from on stage. Congratulations to 6th grader Imani Caserta for taking 1st place and to 8th grader Andrew Nguyen for taking 2nd! These two will be representing LIS at the District Spelling Bee on February 12th at Baldwin High School to compete for the opportunity to go on to the Hawaii State Spelling Bee. I’d also like to give a shout out to our Hawaiian Immersion class for winning 1st Place in the Na Mele O Maui singing competition!! Mahalo to our students for their dedication and hard work, and A BIG MAHALO to Kumu Kanoe Steward, Music Teacher Beth Fobbe-Wills and our District support RT Louise Alborano for their time and dedication to our students! Mahalo for all you do providing these priceless memories for our keiki! December represents Compassion for our IMUA character value of the month. It fits well during this time of year when people are in the holiday spirit and in a giving, generous mood. It’s a time when we are reminded to be thinking of others, feeling compassion for those in need and feeling gratitude for the things and people we have in our lives. I know I’m grateful for our sons and daughters and for all of our Lahaina Intermediate community! Enjoy your Winter Break, Happy Holidays! We held our annual 1st Quarter Renaissance Reward Day at the beginning of November - as usual it was a successful, hot, wet, fun in the sun day for all! Students who were invited to skip class for the afternoon and come play earned their Renaissance Card with good behavior, grades, and 4 hours of community service. They also received their Renaissance Cards, which are good to use during the 2nd quarter to receive discounts & freebies from so many of our community partners.

Mahalo to all of our parent volunteers, we hope it was as much fun for you as it was for us and students! Please know we could not do something like this for our keike without your support!

Mahalo to our cafeteria staff, DJ Ron, Watanabe Produce, and Meadow Gold for your time and your generous donations!

Up next… Games & Grinds!!
