Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Aloe Blacc will release his first
holiday album, Christmas Funk featuring eight original songs written
by Blacc, and two classic cover songs by Wham! and Mariah Carey.
“Christmas Funk is the type of holiday album I have been waiting to hear
for a long time,” says Aloe. “These new song concepts and stories are my
interpretation of the time I spend with family and friends. I’ve been a fan of
Motown and soulful Christmas songs since I was a young child. As much
as I love Sinatra and Nat King Cole, I feel like the holiday spirit needed
a funky revival. The eight new original songs are a perfect complement
to the extra funky versions of two undeniable holiday classics, ‘All I Want
For Christmas Is You,’ and ‘Last Christmas.’ I chose to cover these songs
because the world deserves to feel the funk.”

When I finished school in 1999 I didn’t really know what to do with my
life. I had just bought my first computer and was killing time by playing
games and smoking weed. One day an old friend came by and brought
a cracked version of Sonic Foundry Acid. He said: ‘You can make music
with this software!’
Of course back then I didn’t realize it, but this was a life changing moment
for me. I used this music program for many many years - 17 years to be
exact. It became the tool that enabled me to express myself creatively
and to do what I love the most: making beats.
Both my setup and my creative process have changed a bit since then,
but basically it’s the same procedure as back in the day. It usually starts
with a few chords, a nice rhythmic loop and some drum bits. The rest
happens by itself.
I remember visiting the Fat Beats store in New York City in 2004. I was
a massive fan. To finally enter the holy halls was a huge deal for me.
I was was soaking up the atmosphere dreaming about a future as a
producer. Who would have thought that I would ever put out a record with
these guys! I feel honored to be part of the Bakers Dozen series and its
outstanding list of producers.

TRACKLISTING
Otis and Dundiff both are originally from Louisville, Kentucky. They only
met shortly before they released their first work together. Sometimes
musicians take their time to find a formula, to carve out a way in which
they create. Not those two. It was an instant creative connection, a artistic
bond from the get go which makes them produce classic song after
classic song. Otis once summarized their working approach like this: “As
with our previous works, the concepts for the songs and album were born
from Dundiff presenting me with broad ideas (instrumentals and titles)
and allowing me to define them through my own perspective (with lyrics
and melodies).”
Dundiff’s organic yet hard hitting productions compliment Otis Junior
soulful timbre perfectly. Around 60% of the sounds on the album are
played live while 40% are based on samples which shows how the music
is created within two different musical birthplaces. the result is too Hip
Hop to be Soul and vice versa but it is sitting very well in between these
chairs.
When Otis Junior and Dr.Dundiff approach an album production they
always try to establish an ongoing theme for the album. Their latest
work deals with the concept of Cool and the contemplations about
what it means to “be cool” to others versus actually feeling cool, calm,
and comfortable in life. Thereafter, the album follows a subtle growth
towards the latter. Beginning with an overt contemplation on what it
means to be cool, the first half of the album speaks from that insecure
perspective. Becoming more sure as the album develops, it ends not with
a contemplation on being cool, but whether or not people are perceived
accurately at all.

TRACKLISTING (Click Tracks In Blue To Preview Audio)
After a long wait, Melbourne’s Public Opinion Afro Orchestra (The
POAO) is set to release their second album, Naming & Blaming, a
pulsing, percussive journey into classic afrobeat. Recorded by a 17 piece
ensemble, led by fierce vocals and a howling horn section, it’s a fitting
21st-century response to the world-shaking music of 1970s Nigeria.
The result is true to the afrobeat blueprint of hypnotic, extended songs,
improvisation and political comment but adds to the formula a host of
pan-African influences and hip-hop elements that reflect the deep
ranging roots of the band.
As the title suggests, and in true afrobeat tradition, Naming & Blaming
pulls no punches. It is an outspokenly political record, a cauldron of strong
opinions where indignation and optimism coexist. Led by the vocals of MC
One Sixth and singer Lamine Sonko, the critique of colonialism is applied
to both the African and Australian experience, the battles of many cultures
informing the group’s ethos as does the importance of community and
staying true to one’s convictions. Uplifting visions of a brighter possible
future as laid out in “No Passport,” the album’s rambunctious opening
song, are balanced with honest reflections on injustice like guest Robbie
Thorpe’s take on Australia’s chequered history in the title track.
For the Naming & Blaming cover, the band was honoured to have the
opportunity to work with one of the originators of the Afrobeat movement
Lemi Ghariokwu, the legendary collage artist and illustrator responsible
for all of Fela’s most famous album covers of the 1970s. This relationship
is what the POAO is all about, paying respects to the culture and keeping
it alive and relevant in the 21st century. Over the last decade, The POAO
have established themselves as a firm festival favourites with their
contemporary approach to Afrobeat.
