WALLS THAT REALLY

ROCKBEAUTY, SUSTAINABILITY, VERSATILITY AND FUNCTION COME TOGETHER IN THIS CHARMING HARDSCAPE FEATURE.

Written by Alli Addison Photography by Chris Leschinsky Design & Installation by Addison Landscape, Inc.

A rare Santa Barbara sandstone dry stacked wall at a Santa Ynez residence.

Hardscape design and installation are an

Addison Landscape specialty, no doubt, and the dry stacked wall is certainly one of our favorite elements. What is a dry stacked wall? It is a collection of natural rock material held together not by mortar, but by friction and gravity, and used primarily as a retaining wall system.

Why dry stack, you ask?

Let’s start with beauty. Simply stated: nature is beautiful! Including natural stone in your landscape helps to meld your property into it’s surroundings. If you are considering adding a dry stacked wall

to your landscape, we hope you will also consider sourcing your material from a local quarry to add a real “sense of place” to your new wall.

Did someone say sustainability? When properly constructed, the dry stack wall can have incredible longevity, lasting decades and more. Due to it’s permeable nature, water seeps through the cracks of the wall, rather than building up behind the wall and applying unnecessary pressure. And don’t forget that the rock is a natural, locally-source-able product. You’ve heard of the “loca-vore” movement in the foodie world? This type of wall can be a part of the “loca-scape” movement!

The rock used for this expansive series of dry stacked walls was

sourced after the 2008 Montecito Tea Fire, giving the stone a unique

“smoked” character.

Versatility should be the dry stacked wall’s middle name! The dry stacked wall can be used as a retaining wall, border or boundary, garden focal point, raised garden bed, seating area, fire feature and so much more.

Lastly, function. The combination of friction and gravity (and lack of mortar) make these walls incredibly durable and reli-able when it comes to retention. So stack up some style and consider a dry stacked wall for your landscape. ALMI

ALLI’S TIPS FOR CREATING A

WELCOMING

& ILLUMINATING

FIRST IMPRESSION

1. Choose a lighting style that coordinates with the style of your home.

2. Proper proportion is key - oversize pieces can create drama and definition while undersized pieces can appear a bit anticlimactic.

3. When in doubt, always go bigger!

4. Installing one lantern on one side of the door? It should measure 1/3 the height of your door.

5. Installing two lanterns on either side of the door? They should each measure 1/4 the height of your door.

6. The center of the bulb in your exterior light fixture should stand 66” above the threshold of the door.

7. Architecture permitting, consider installing a single exterior light fixture over the top of the front door, rather than on the sides.

8. Remember, aside from safety and visibility, exterior lighting is used for highlighting the details of your abode, so don’t overlook the accent lights. Illuminating those unique architectural features will make your home shine, day or night.
