Objectives1. To enable participants to share what they have seen as outcomes of
traditional thinking & approaches such as aversive consequences, compliance programs, punishment, physical control /restraint.
2. To enable participants to identify harmful outcomes related to ① Emotional well being② Physical well being③ Self-esteem④ Happiness⑤ Control over daily decisions & choices
3. To enable participants to identify harmful outcomes related to negative work cultures.
4. To introduce participants to the neurophysiology of stress & harmful outcomes of trauma.
Vignette: RobertRobert is a 25 year old man attending your AACHe currently works on your BWA work line and
struggles to attend dailyRobert has downs syndrome and SIB behaviorsRobert is able to do most DLAs on his own but
Robert has a sweet tooth and will take snacks from others.
Please count off by 4s and divide into your
groups
Each group will receive a paper with one of four traditional
models:1. Aversive consequences ( water spray to removing
personal items)
2. Compliance plans (1 coffee /pop per day, having to earn your favorite PPT( people-places-things)
3. Punishment (taking away your PPT)
4. Being physically managed, controlled/restrained.
As a group please write down 3 goals that you might write for Robert based on traditional model you were given.
Now that you have written your goals…
Put yourself in Robert’s shoes, how do your goals affect these:1. Emotional well being2. Physical well being3. Self-esteem4. Happiness5. Control over daily decisions & choices
Please write down one example for each category
The Big Picture…Now that we’ve stood in Robert’s
shoes, discuss with your group what your work line would look like if you have 13 more individuals like Robert with similar goals. How would these goals effect each individual’s daily
functioning and productivity?

Emotional First Aid is essential to not only our individual’s well being but also our co-workers, supervisors and ourselves. If we are able to provide this essential step in relationship building then we will develop long lasting bonds that are both positive and strong. We will be able to live and provide a “Good Life” for ourselves and those around us!
