Hair Care Raw Materials & Formulations - COSC 6543Fall Semester 2012
Syllabus continued
Course DescriptionCurrently this course is structured as a series of lectures. The lecture notes are
posted on Web Campus and are available to the students. The students will be
asked to obtain a raw material sample from an industry manufacturer and report
(orally) to the class regarding 1) the experience of obtaining the sample and 2) the
nature and use of the raw material. In addition, the students will be required to
prepare a written report about a raw material category, such as: FD&C dyes or
preservatives or polyalkylglucoside surfactants. The report is to discuss the
chemistry, sources, safety, stability and uses of the raw materials.
Two exams will be given. Each will consist of a take-home exam and an in-classexam. The classes, while based upon a lecture, are informal and discussions,
questions and comments are actively encouraged.
Course Objectives
The course is designed to help the student better understand the hair care
products industry. This is done by providing a hands-on experience in ordering a
raw material. By reporting on this experience in class, the student will improve
their oral presentation skills. The written report is intended to increase the
students knowledge of their topic, but it will also acquaint the student withinformation sources such as periodicals, texts, the internet and government data
sources. The lectures are designed as individual segments - each intended to
increase the students understanding of that topic. For example, the first lecture
discusses hairits structure, function and chemistry. The additional lectures
address specific hair care products, their raw materials and chemistries or specific
facets of hair care product formulation, testing or regulation.
At the completion of the course, the student will be conversant with the major
hair care products and have an understanding of the raw materials used to make
them and basic principles of how they are formulated.
Assessment of Learning
The oral presentations are graded as pass/fail depending upon whether the oral
report and the written documentation were presented or not. It is suggested that
some form of presentation software system be used, i.e. PowerPoint.

It will be graded at 70% (a C-) if received, with the grade increasing as the topic is
explained in more depth and as discussions of the chemistry, sources, safety, stability and uses of the raw materials are expanded.
Exams are graded on the basis of a 100% with: A=94-100, A-=90 up to 94;
B+=87 up to 90, B=84 up to 87, B-=80 up to 84; C+=77 up to 80, C=74 up
to 77, C-=70 up to 74.
Failure to give the oral report in class or to hand in the written paper or to hand in
the take-home exams or to not take the in-class mid-term or final exams will
result in a grade of incomplete (I).
Mid-term exam grades may be discussed directly with me. Papers and final
exams will be held for review, if desired by the student. It is preferred that the written papers be submitted electronically and they may
be submitted before the due date. Submit to: [email protected]
