Peter Okoye and his twin brother have contributed immensely to the development of the music scene in Nigeria. They personify pop culture as we know it today. With the explosion of popular music comes the star- fetish syndrome – our seeming occupation with the private lives and idiosyncrasies of our creative talents.

Peter Okoye sets the record straight in his chat with Pamela Echemunor. For our cover shoot, we wanted to present Peter in his fatherly role – showing him to be just like any father – loving and doting over his son. See pp. 8-10.

Fashion today is free; there seems to be no rules to follow – just experiment and have fun. From the shirt dress, compiled by Yemisi Suleiman, to the mix and match trend by Pamela Echemunor, you can work up a storm in your

It is often said that plaids and stripes do not mix, but these days, stripes go with everything, including plaids. In fact, prints are pretty mixable across the board. However, you should keep these few tips in mind.

REPORTAGE

PETER OKOYE

Multi-talented duo, Peter and Paul Okoye, a.k.a. P-Square, started their rise to fame over a decade ago; starting small, performing on a local scale before making it to the big league. The duo, managed by big brother Jude Okoye, introduced pop into the Nigerian music scene during an era it wasn’t a

popular genre.

From street to stage, the limelight took them beyond borders, performing beside the biggest names in the music industry, locally and internationally. The second half of the duo, Peter, shares his story with Allure Vanguard. He speaks on his love for music, life and family.

Top 8 Sports for Children That Aid Good Grades

011HEALTHY LIVINGby - Teri Mendes

For comments and questions please email [email protected], @terimendes. I would love to hear from you, till next week. - it’s ta ta for now! XOXO

Trying to improve your child’s grades? The solution may be found in sports rather than books. A recent article in Time Magazine revealed the more moderate to vigorous exercise a child gets, the higher their test scores are. While there

activity your child will love. Soccer and basketball are great go-to sports, but these less common activities also provide plenty of exercise and fun.

1. QUIDDITCHThis sport scores big with fans of the Harry Potter series. Quidditch, which uses elements of rugby, dodgeball, and lacrosse, made its way

to the real world in 2007 when students at Middlebury College started playing on their quad. In 2010, after more campuses caught on to the craze, the International Quidditch Association was formed, it has been said to be an Olympic sport soon. While there are very few children’s leagues, you can easily set up a Quidditch tournament in your backyard.

2. TAEKWONDOThough karate tends to be the martial art of choice, tae kwon do

Originating in Korea, the sport emphasizes

the use of kicks that are set up through a series of spins and jumps. But don’t worry about your little one using his tricks to harm others. Like all martial arts, tae kwon do teaches students to use the moves only in self-defense.

3. SWIMMINGBy enrolling your child in weekly swim lessons, they will learn a skill that can keep them in shape for life. As an added bonus, they will learn to love

the water and how to stay safe when they are in it.

4. TAP DANCEIf tutus don’t thrill your little one, try tap. More gender-neutral than other dance styles, tap keeps kids entertained with loud noises and fun motions. As they

advance, they learn more complicated moves and even a few tricks that will make their ballerina friends jealous.

5. ULTIMATE FRISBEEThink football without the heavy equipment and hard hits. In ultimate frisbee, or ultimate, teammates pass

hopes of making it to the end zone without any fumbles or interceptions. In addition to hand-eye coordination and stamina, this fast-paced game emphasizes strong communication skills, which

6. TennisWith tennis, your child gets a full-body workout

court. The quick movements improve stamina, balance, and

agility, while the swings and serves strengthen muscles. Start training now, and he or she could become the next Serena Williams.

7. ROCK CLIMBINGFor a fun activity without the competition, try rock climbing. The outdoor activity builds both physical and mental strength. Climbers often have to make decisions as they go and face unforeseen problems, which will build your child’s problem-solving skills. Even if you don’t live near a rocky range, you can still enjoy the

activity at some indoor gym.

8. WATER POLOSwimming isn’t the only underwater sport. Water polo requires kids to build their endurance (a player may swim up to 1.5 miles in a 30-minute game), while working on communication and teamwork. Kids can start

competing

I have always been a huge fan of garlic bread, beans and red meat.

A few days ago, I was asked to make a dietary meal for a cancer patient and amidst my research, it occurred to me that garlic and legumes such as kidney beans when paired with tomatoes is bumper packed with antioxidants.

Immediately I thought... Garlic bread, delicious beans and chilli con carne.

My mouth began to water as I rushed into my car and headed for the grocery store.

I wanted to make this quick, easy and delicious so I went straight to the canned food isle and picked up a can each of kidney beans, white beans and tomato purée. I could use cooked brown beans but that would have been boring. Then to the butchers for 250g of fresh minced meat and then to the vegetable mart for onions, tomatoes, pepper, fresh basil and coriander, garlic and ginger and scotch bonnets (ata rodo). I also got a pack of cherry tomatoes and headed back to my Miele kitchen for the throw down.

I put on my apron and turned up the heat in the oven.

Chopped a quarter green, red and yellow pepper, set aside; Diced 1 medium onion, 2 scotch bonnets (ata rodo); Grated 1 clove of garlic, 1tsp worth of ginger and one medium sized carrot; Tomatoes also got a chop, seeds and all.

Then the real throw down started. I put on the cooker, heated up my sauce pan and threw in 1 tablespoon of olive oil. In went the garlic for a few seconds and

Tomatoes followed shortly after and covered it to let simmer.

I wanted my mince to be cooked and well seasoned before being paired with the tomato stew so, In the sauce pan, I put in 1 tsp. of olive oil and 1 crushed garlic clove then 1/2 a tablespoon of diced onions and in went the 250g of mince beef. Stirred until browned and season with 1tsp of black pepper, 1tsp of fresh basil, 1 tsp. of steak seasoning and salt to taste... It tasted heavenly.

Back to my tomatoes stew, which was beginning to reduce a little too much but ended up working in my favour, where I added the rodo and stirred in the mince. Seasoned with some more salt, 1/2 tsp of white pepper, and some more fresh basil (1/4tsp). Tossed in the mixed bell peppers for 3 minutes and set aside.Meanwhile, I emptied the can of kidney beans and white beans, measured 1/4 cup each and sautéed in the same pan used for the mince.

The freshly baked baguette sliced diagonally was spread with 50g of unsalted butter mixed with - using a fork - 1/2 clove of crushed garlic and

1/4 tsp. of oregano. Grilled for 3minutes on both sides until golden browntime to plate.

Much to do about Beans

I grabbed a long plate. Placed the baguette bread at an angle topped with the chilli and tomato mince, a scoop of

coriander. Tasted a bit and it was beyond Divine.

Each bottle is placed in a handcrafted box. Set in a bed of suede, the unleaded crystal bottle is cork-

LagosPhoto Foundation presents “Each Passing Day”, a solo exhibition of iconic photojournalist, Akintunde Akinleye, showcasing his documentation of Nigeria.

“Each Passing Day”, Brings together photographs categorized to reflect series of unrelated events and activities in the daily lives of ordinary citizens of Nigeria.

Central to Akintunde’s storytelling of the post military era in Nigeria, are the trials, tribulations and joys of ordinary Nigerians, as they aspire for a better quality of life. The pictures depict a truthful rendering of each passing day in the life of resilient Nigerians and show the political, social and physical landscape in which we exist.

“Each Passing Day” is a few of hundreds of thousands of single images, extracted from different documentary projects and spot news events, but inspired by the Nigerian space during the last decade and now. This exhibit is a retrospect of Akintunde’s style, good taste for aesthetics.

Akintunde has been exhibited in Washington, Los Angeles, New Mexico, Lagos, Amsterdam, Graz, Bamako,
