Editor’s Note

Lisa Omorodion’s interview enthralled me! I was so happy to put her on this cover. As a Bini person myself, it was a thing of joy that a young Bini girl like her is so focused and enterprising. It was a refreshing read that portrays a positive image of the Binis. I was frankly getting quite irritated with the Italian image, a slur on the very proud heritage of the people. So, kudos to Lisa and the numerous Bini ladies doing positive things!

Lisa talks very lovingly of the role her parents played in how she turned out, an indication that psychology is right - everything starts from the cradle. One cannot over-emphasize family values and how it impacts on character. “Teach a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it...”, the good book teaches.

Read how she rode into Nollywood; heads high, holding the reins, far from the casting couch on pp. 8 & 9.

On our fashion pages, Jemi Ekunkunbor is following the Colour Grail. She shows us shades that have now become the in- colours, like the many shades of life. Dark shades giving way to faint variations, the ebbing away of strong for the weak. When life seems so tough, suddenly, it doesn’t look so bad. When fuchsia gives way to dusty pink in the colour spectrum, that’s strong ebbing away. Please, turn to pp. 6 & 7 and see for yourself.

Finally, another Valentine Day is upon us. As you make your plans for that special someone, Pamela Echemunor has gone ahead to give a guide on how to get that special something for that special somebody. There is more, turn to pp. 4 & 5.

I leave you in the loving embrace of Allure.Have a great week!

Larger-than-life buttons are easier to wear than you may think. The key is to avoid looking cutesy and kitschy. To nail the look, seek out pieces with streamlined silhouettes and modern details.

OVERSIZE BUTTONS

LACE FLORALSIt is clear that lace has blossomed on the runways. This season Altuzarra focused on feminine frocks, while Alberta Ferretti took a Victorian approach, and Giambattista Valli played with trim and layering. I love that lace can take on different meanings. When paired with a suit, it softens a tailored look and adds a touch of girliness.”

On the runway, it was go big or go home. But if the silhouette intimidates you, try the look in small doses by wearing a top with a tiered hem. When wearing a flouncy tiered dress, keep the rest of your look simple with minimal accessories.

TIERED TREND

Cutouts have been in demand season after season, but this time around, fabrics have been slashed and spliced to create an unexpected peek-a-boo effect. When giving the trend a go, be sure to balance out your look with slouchy silhouettes and cover up elsewhere.

The Valentine season has come again, and romance is in the air, cupid’s arrow is already spreading the love bug and lovers are now in a bind as to planning a sweet surprise for their loved ones. Not to worry though, most romantic

VALENTINEdate ideas have been over played, but who says there aren’t some unorthodox things to do that day that’ll definitely imprint a fabulous memory in the mind of your loved one. If you are in that bind, then this article is for you.

Plan a romantic picnic, you could even build a little tent in the backyard with candles surrounding it and a nice picnic basket filled with sweet tooth goodies. Remember to buy a special gift to mark the occasion.

Who doesn’t like a good treasure hunt? Create a map for your spouse leading him/her to where his or her gift and surprise dinner is waiting. Drop little hints around the house until they find their way to you.

TREASURE HUNT

After a crazy day at work, pampering your spouse is the best thing anyone can ask for. You could create a mini home made spa day by running a nice bubble bath surrounded by scented candles, chocolate and wine and after that, a nice dinner at the table for two.

It’s not often that one gets a chance to just stay indoors wearing pajamas, stretched out on the couch with a box of pizza or some popcorn. This might just be what you both need, sometimes it’s hard to get dressed and go out after a long day at the office.

COZY MOVIE NIGHT WITH PIZZA OR POPCORN

Scenery is everything when planning a romantic dinner, so at least if the cooking isn’t great, that should more than make up for it. Remember to get a nice Pinot Noir wine to wrap up the night, that’ll definitely add some zing to your meal plan.

We are all used to the conventional gifts, perfumes, jewellery etc, but did you know presentation is key? Make that gift extra special by presenting it in the most mind-blowing way possible. Here are some out of the box ways to say ‘I love you’ to that special person.

Out of the boxGIFTS

That say I love you

Allow your spouse to wake up and answer the door bell this time, a package will be waiting at the door in a box containing balloons. As he/she goes through it, there’ll be a special surprise gift attached to it from you with a heartfeltnote saying “I love you.”

Balloon carrying gift out of a box

Cakes are baked specially to make people happy, what better way to make your loved one even happier than to insert that thing they’ve been wanting for a while now into the cake or write a brief message on the cake telling them where to find the gift.

Cakes with present inside

Fireworks light up the sky like manmade stars. Everybody loves them. Say a big I love you by writing it in the sky in fireworks to that special someone.

Firework surprise Treat your loved one to a heart shaped Piñata filled with delicious candies this season. Place it in a significant spot you are sure he/she will come across it and have them swing away!

Fashion last year in Nigeria, was an exciting one that saw two colours, teal and coral dominating the scene. Fashionistas shopped the trend. Everywhere you turn, these colours prevailed.

It’s 2016 and the tide has turned. New colours have surfaced and they are not restricted to one gender. The colours are breezy and reflect a desire to play. Soft palettes of pastel will rule and a few bright colours that are not so vivid. Here are the seasons colours authenticated by colour authority Pantone.

No matter how cosmopolitan we look or get, nature has a way of pushing it’s boundaries to bring us close to nature. Nature remains a great inspiration for designers expressed in green garments.

We all need a bit of cheer and laughter don’t we? Butter cup, a hue of yellow is such a bright and cheerful colour. With Buttercup, designers reveal the sunny side of the wearer.

To many lovers of fashion, the colour orange has always been favourite. It is friendly, bright and beautiful. This season, one of the colours trending, is Peach Echo, a member of the orange colour family. It is a friendlier, tempered orange coour.

Fiesta is a a shade of red that is yellow based. Red of any hue is fiery, hot, intense and of high energy. It is believed that a woman in red gets noticed first before a woman in any other colour.Bring on excitement as you plan your looks this year.

There is something about pastel that is so sweet and tranquil. Limpet Shell is a shade of aqua that leans toward the green family. This colour will do well for Aso ebi.

Iced Coffee is not a very common colour in this clime. It is a strong neutral that will last through the seasons. Because of its earthy nature, it is a strong foundation colour that will pair nicely with some of the other season’s colours.

What was growing up like for you?Growing up for me was amazing. I am the fifth child

in a family of six and we did everything together. That’s the reason I have known love and togetherness all my life. Growing up, my parents taught me the value of serving before I could lead; they made me understand why a good name is better than silver or gold. after my first degree, they decided to allow me follow my dreams by allowing me to produce my own movies with the condition that I’ll still be part of the family business.

What is it like joggling work and movie production?

Well, to be honest, it’s not easy. The family business is an oil and gas company and I’m one of the directors alongside my older siblings. I have to be at work every day. Imagine resuming every day before heading to set. It’s hectic but worth it.

You commenced your film making career three years ago with the movie, First Cut. What was the experience like and what challenges did you face?

First Cut which was directed by the veteran director, Chico Ejiro, is an emotional drama that focuses on the societal stigma and subsequent psychological burdens that cloak victims of rape and which, inevitably, alter their perspective on life. The experience of making such a movie with a strong message was amazing. My joy was in reaching out to millions of people going through similar situations, to tell them that they are not alone.

The challenges I faced were based on the fact that it was my first time making a movie. I got to understand that no matter the amount of money you invest in a film, it takes the grace of God, patience and a good team to make a good film.

You made another film recently called Schemers.

Was it an easier experience? Oh, of course, it was. Schemers is another movie

with a strong message; this time, the focus was domestic violence. I enjoyed every bit of making and acting in this film. My co-producer, Mrs. Grace Edwin Okon, and the rest of my team made it an effortless experience. It’s out now on Africa Magic Box Office. It will be out on Iroko TV this February.

As a fresh face in Nollywood, is it hard getting movie roles with other producers?

At the beginning, it was. At first, it is always a trying time for everyone but I believe everyone has their time. In recent times, I have been getting calls every day from different producers to be on different movie sets. I am

especially grateful to directors like Obi Emelonye, Lancelot Imasuen and Chico Ejiro for giving me a chance to act in their productions even before I got to this point.

What would you say should be done to improve the movie industry in Nigeria?

The most important issues, to me right now, are the issues of distribution and piracy. There isn’t a centralized platform for us, film makers, to distribute our films. It’s really sad because it cripples our willingness to invest. If you invest money in a film, to make it back is a problem. The Nigerian movie industry has the potential to grow if these problems are tackled.

You were recently recognized and given a certificate of award by SME100 and Forbes Africa as one of Nigeria’s 25 under-25 Young Enterprising Females. How did that make you feel?

It was a great honour to be recognized and celebrated as a young enterprising female in Nigeria. It shows that I am doing something right. I’m grateful to God for crowning my sincere efforts with success.

You’ve lost weight recently. How did you go about it?

Every member of my family motivated me to work out and eat healthier meals.

What keeps you focused and balanced? My family. Like I said earlier, I’m blessed with the

most supportive family. They do not only motivate me, they are also involved in every project I do and I’m part of. They are the reason I succeed in whatever I do.

Has your career choice affected your personal life in any way?

Well, as an actress, I know I will be criticized and misunderstood by many. I know that it’s perfectly normal but what’s important to me is that I get to showcase my talent to the world and I get to make my family and loved ones proud. Those who will appreciate me for what I do will and others will eventually see the light.

What should we expect from you in the nearest future?

I’m happy to say that I’m working on a comedy series, inspired by real-life events and, by God’s grace, it will be a hit.

What is beauty to you? To me, beauty is happiness. It’s the images and

moments that inspire and represent the most distinct and remarkable attractiveness of our souls. It’s the moments we feel free and real. It’s the moments we feel proud and eminent. It’s the moment we feel alive. It is often distorted, misunderstood and shadowed by a wide amount of conflicting pressures. It is something we endlessly strive for rather than see in the true essence of our happiest moments.

Growing up, my parents taught me

the value of serving before I could lead; they

made me understand why a

6. Take A Glucomannan SupplementA fiber called glucomannan has been shown to cause weight loss in several studies. This is a type of fiber that absorbs water and “sits” in your gut for a while, making you feel fuller and helping you eat fewer calories. Studies have shown that people who supplement with glucomannan lose a bit more weight than those who don’t.7. Cut Back On Added SugarAdded sugar is the single worst ingredient in the modern diet, and most people are eating way too much of it. Studies show that sugar (and high-fructose corn syrup) consumption is strongly associated with the risk of obesity, as well as diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and others. If you want to lose weight, you should be cutting back on added sugars. Just make sure to read labels, because even so-called health foods can be loaded with sugar.8. Eat Less Refined CarbsRefined carbohydrates are usually sugar, or grains that have been stripped of their fibrous, nutritious parts (includes white bread and pasta). Studies show that refined carbs can spike blood sugar rapidly, leading to hunger, cravings, and increased food intake a few hours later. Eating refined carbs is strongly linked to obesity. If you’re going to eat carbs, make sure to eat them with their natural fiber.9. Brush Your Teeth After DinnerAlthough I’m not aware of any studies on this, many people recommend brushing your teeth and/or flossing right after dinner. Then you won’t be as tempted to have a late-night snack.10. Do aerobic exerciseDoing aerobic exercise (cardio) is an excellent way to burn calories and improve your physical and mental health. It appears to be particularly effective to lose belly fat, the unhealthy fat that tends to build up

around your organs and cause metabolic disease.11. Lift weightsOne of the worst side effects of dieting is that it tends to cause muscle loss and metabolic slowdown, often referred to as starvation mode. The best way to prevent this from happening is to do some sort of resistance exercise, like lifting weights, Pilates or yoga. Studies show that weight-lifting can help keep your metabolism high and prevent you from losing precious muscle mass. Of course, it’s not just important to lose fat. You also want to make sure that what is beneath looks good. Doing some sort of resistance exercise is critical for that.12. Chew slowerIt can take a while for the brain to “register” that you’ve had enough to eat. Some studies show that chewing more slowly can help you eat fewer calories and increase the production of hormones linked to weight loss.13. Beat your food addictionA recent 2014 study of 196,211 individuals found that 19.9% of people fulfilled the criteria for food addiction. If you suffer from overpowering cravings and can’t seem to get your eating under control no matter how hard you try, then you may be a food addict. In this case, get help. Trying to lose weight without dealing with this problem first is next to impossible. Alternatively, try to exercise as often as you eat, 5 days a week then you can keep the obsession under control without realizing it.14. Eat more proteinProtein is the single most important nutrient when it comes to losing weight. Eating a high-protein diet has been shown to boost metabolism by 80 to 100 calories per day while helping you feel so satiated that you eat up to 441 fewer calories per day. One study also showed that protein at 25% of calories reduced obsessive

Dark under eye circles cause one to look tired and ill, especially after a long day at the office. This facial hiccup is highly attributed to various factors including sleep deprivation, facial features, skin tone, diet and aging, but most importantly stress. However, experts have devised means as to how to deal with these half-moon plague that torment many of us. As we age, the under eye area skin becomes thinner, such that the larger bluish coloured veins are more visible. This contributes to dark circles. Our cells reflect what we eat and unhealthy, processed food can cause damage to our cells, which will lead to discoloration under the eye area.

Pack a veggie sandwich and a fruit before bed for work the next day and have a cup of green tea in the morning; this will help keep you active and lively until your next meal of the day.

Typically Whiskey is attributed to various health hazards but this happens only when it’s ingested in excess. Believe it or not, in the early 15th century, when the Irish and Scottish distilled it, whiskey was called “Aqua Vitae” (Water of Life / Lively Water) and it was used for medicinal purposes. Nowadays, whiskey has been used for various other purposes, from healing wounds to being used as a cleaning agent. Here are some health benefits of whiskey.

Unusual Health Benefits of Whiskey

Spirit is the alcoholic equivalent of salt, it’s nature enables it blend into any edible food or beverage. Whiskey brings out the flavor of the sea in seafood, the smokiness of smoked food, and the sweetness in dessert, it has a vast flavour spectrum and immense health benefits; the antioxidants in whiskey aid in the reduction of blood pressure and stress relief. Here are some appetizing recipes made with whiskey.

GLAZED RIBSIngredients• 3 x 500g packs pork Ribs (about 16 ribs in total)• Herby green salad (Cabbage, lettuce ,kale and cucumber slices)For the glaze• 140g orange marmalade (boiled peel of citurus fruits with sugar and juices)• 2 tbsp dark muscovado sugar• 150ml bourbon• 100ml fresh orange juice• 5cm/2in piece fresh root ginger, peeled and cubed• 5 tbsp tomato ketchup• 2 tbsp white wine vinegar

Method:Preheat oven to 190̊ Degrees. Place the pork in a large roasting oven tray and pour a little bit of cold water, barely covering meat. Put pan in oven and cook for an hour until tender. In a saucepan, mix together all the ingredients for the glaze and heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the marmalade has dissolved. Turn up the heat and allow the mixture to bubble until it has reduced and very slightly thickened. Remove ribs from the oven and raise the temperature of the oven to 220̊ Degrees. Drain pork in sink and shake off liquid. Place rib in roasting tin, pour over glaze until it’s evenly coated and roast in oven for about 50 minutes, turn over from time to time to make sure it is well covered. Serve with herby green salad.
