100TH/From B1she said. They’d come knocking on all the doors to get the neighbors to ask them to help shuck the corn, and they’d fix a big dinner ... but that’s all done by machines now.”

Wedderspoon waited tables at the now-demolished Fyn Mere Mansion and, at 75 years old, went to work for the Coopers in the same capacity. “I’d help with high teas, with the silver and all that monkey business. I’ll just have a cup of tea, no silver.”

One of the things she admits to missing is the diversity of the shop-ping in Cooperstown. “There used to be more shoe stores,” she said. “And more grocery stores. But there aren’t anymore.”

And while out for groceries at Coo-perstown Commons one afternoon two years ago, when she was 98, she came back to her car to find a sheriff waiting for her. “He asked if I was all right, and I said yes, but a few weeks later

I got a letter from the DMV – they wanted me to take a test!”

She took her driver’s test again, and passed. “They even sent me an apolo-gy,” she said. “I still have my license, but my car broke down – I didn’t, but my car did! So here I am, 100 years old and thinking about buying a new car! But I don’t think I will.”

As the milestone birthday approach-es, Wedderspoon has a few things to attribute for her longevity.

Long lifelines are in her blood; her mother lived until to be 99 and her cousin lived to 99½.

A healthy lifestyle also helped. “I never ate fat or junk food, because that’s what it is – junk,” she said. “And I was never one for Coca-Cola.” She did, however, confess to a weak-ness for ginger ale. “I weigh the same now as I did when I was 19 or 20,” she boasted.

But that doesn’t mean she starves herself. “I love good food,” she said.

“And even though I get Meals on Wheels, I still cook for myself.” As a Christmas treat, she made herself lamb chops, sweet potatoes and creamed onions. “And I’m Czech, so I love sauerkraut, pork and dumplings – it’s my favorite.”

Her “companion” cat, Julie, keeps her company in between visits from friends. “I’ve never been so popular in all my life!” she says, laughing. “I’m a very timid person – everyone’s talking about my birthday but me – my friends are even trying to get WKTV’s Willard Scott to read my name on the news!”

Mildred is a longtime member of the Pierstown Grange – she lives near the grange hall, and grange members planned to celebrate her centennial at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at a meeting at John and Karen Dunlap’s, Allen’s Lake Road.

COME & SEE OUR SALES & LEASING PROFESSIONALS TODAY!

It was electrifying.A few minutes before, Ken Hol-loway, Watertown Daily Times

general manager during the late 1980s, had handed out mint copies of Conrad Fink’s “Strategic Newspaper Manage-ment” to all the managers who report-ed to him.

We had been excitedly thumbing through the glossy sky-blue paperback, and what Conrad had wrought was becoming clear to us.

“Newspaper management” – what a concept to the young turks who had labored under the generally laissez-faire newspaper administrations of the day. Imagine, setting goals, devising strategies to meet them, then measur-ing outcomes.

“Strategic Newspaper Management” was a lifeline to many an idealistic editor striving for consistency and continuous improvement.

Reading The Freeman’s Journal in Connecticut before moving here in 2006, there was a letter from Conrad

Fink of Cherry Valley, decrying the wind-turbine project then planned in his neighborhood.

How many Conrad Finks can there be in this world? He was one and the same, it turned out.

Pulling “Strategic Newspaper Man-agement” off the shelf and thumbing through it, one case study in particular jumped out: Conrad had been im-pressed by Dick Sanford’s 1980 ag-gregation of eight weekly newspapers, including The Freeman’s Journal and Worcester Times-Monitor, around his printing plant at the Cobleskill Times-Journal.

Fink saw that approach – sharing expensive capital equipment and back-office resources among several name-plates – as the wave of the future for what at the time was an economically floundering newspaper segment. (To-day, ultra-local weeklies are outshining

their thinly stretched, Internet-battered daily counterparts.)

Relocated in Otsego County, we sought each other out, swapping yarns and pointed opinions about the state of our mutual business on the Hawkeye’s sunny patio. After that, he was always available with gentle guidance and pinpoint advice when this newspaper was at a crossroads.

The obituaries remarked on his bushy eyebrows, and they were bushy indeed, but the energy and steely intel-ligence beneath them impressed even more.

After his quarter-century at AP, and a decade as acquisitions executive for Roy Park’s Ithaca-based newspaper chain, he was thrilled with his profes-sorship as the University of Georgia’s Grady School of Communications. The accolades from colleagues and former students at his passing ring very true.

– JIM KEVLIN

CHERRY VALLEY – Conrad Charles Fink, 79, a newspaper industry pioneer who featured The Freeman’s Journal and other local weeklies in his groundbreaking “Strategic Newspaper Management” (1987), died Saturday, Jan. 14, at Athens (Ga.) Regional Medical Center.

A distinguished professor at the University of Geor-gia, which he joined after a 25-year career as a foreign correspondent and executive for The Associated Press, summer vacations and school breaks always found him at his second home in Cherry Valley.

“He would say, ‘Each year thousands of students come to the University of Georgia, and I try to save a few,’” Les Simpson, publisher of the Amarillo Globe-News in Texas and a student of Fink’s in the 1980s, was quoted as saying in the AP obit. “If somebody ever told you Fink wanted to see you, first of all it would scare you. But second of all you would know you had caught his eye.”

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Fink served as a first lieu-tenant in the Marine Corps for four years. He then worked as a night editor in Chicago, and from there, he moved to the Associated Press where he worked first as a foreign correspondent and, later, as a vice presi-dent for the AP in New York

City. His career as a foreign correspondent during the 1960s took him to major conflict zones in Southeast Asia and the former Soviet Union. Between 1967 and 1970, he was executive

director of the AP-Dow Jones Economic Report in London.

After leaving AP, he joined Park Communica-tions, Ithaca, as executive vice president, and negoti-ated many of the company’s acquisitions during its expansion during the 1970s.

He began his teaching career in 1983 at the Henry W. Grady College of Jour-nalism at UGA, where he became a legendary teacher, highly respected and much beloved by his students for his capacity to bring his

real-world experience into the classroom.

His publications include a dozen textbooks that have been translated widely and sold to journalism and media management students around the world. “Stra-tegic Newspaper Manage-ment,” in particular, gal-vanized young managers coming up the ranks in the 1980s.

One case study focused on Dick Sanford’s ag-gregation of eight weekly newspapers, including The Freeman’s Journal, around a

central printing plant at the Times-Journal in Cobleskill.

In academe, Fink held the William S. Morris Chair in Newspaper Strategy and Management at Grady Col-lege, where he also devel-oped a residence program for visiting professional journalists and, most recent-ly, spearheaded the creation of an endowed program in sports journalism.

His teaching accolades were many: he was ap-pointed the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2004; he won

the Regents Teaching Excel-lence Award in 2004 and the Freedom Forum’s National Journalism Teacher of the Year Award in 2002; and he was awarded the Grady College’s Superior Teaching Award in 1986, 1998, 1991, and 1992.

In fall 2011, Fink was the first faculty member to be inducted into the Grady Fellowship, a society of Grady’s most accomplished alumni and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Sue (Henry) Fink; a daughter, Karen Eliot; a son, Conrad S. Fink and his wife Catherine; three siblings, Donald Fink, Kathryn Her-man, and Elizabeth Hynes; and two granddaughters, Emily and Eliza Fink. He was predeceased by his parents Donald and Mary (Fox) Fink; and by his be-loved aunt, Olive Fox, all of Marquette, Mich.

A service will be held locally at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Ames-Sprout Brook United Methodist Church, 613 Latimer Hill Road, Ames. Interment will be at a later date in Sharon Cemetery, Leesville.

Visitation will be 5:30-7 p.m Friday, Jan. 20, at the Lappeus Funeral Home, Sharon Springs.

Memorial donations may be made to the Henry W. Grady College of Journal-ism and Mass Communica-tion, 120 Hooper St. Athens, GA 30602
