Allotments Stockport is the new name for SMAGA, which began as Stockport & District Allotment Society in 1945. Not only has the name changed,we are working to make it more useful to members and representative of all Stockport allotment sites.

We endeavour to make meetings interesting, informative and welcoming - ALL PLOTHOLDERS WELCOME - MEET PEOPLE FROM OTHER SITES. We have a website and Facebook Group to share news, views and ideas. And we are preparing for the future by being fully informed of members’ concerns and opinions.

Join the Allotment Advisers To prepare for these changes, we are strengthening our network to keep in touch with all Stockport allotment sites. Sites have been grouped into 5 areas, and we have ALLOTMENT ADVISERS in each area - to collect information, news, concerns & ideas. We need more. . . . . .

Take this opportunity to develop a voluntary role in Allotments Stockport

• Advisers visit plotholders on sites in their area as often as possible, finding out site news, problems, advice/information needed, and to ensure that sites know about AS news and meetings, especially if they don’t often attend.

• Advisers often find out who their local Councillors are and keep an eye out for any developments that might affect allotments, such as planning applications or petitions.

• Advisers bring their findings to AS committee meetings and help AS to prepare for changes to come.

Stockport Council, along with other local authorities, is likely to change allotment leases and put rents up soon

• Tameside allotment rents £105 per year • Sefton rents increased to £78 + water charges • Frodsham allotments managed by a private company - £250 per year (All plots taken + waiting list) • Wigan rents increased by 50% in 2014. Non statutory sites were put out to tender. • Trafford allotment rents increase to £100+ • Leeds Allotment Gardening Federation sets up fighting fund to challenge rent rises from £38.50 to £58 in

2015, £64 in 2016 and £72 in 2017, pension concession reduced to 20%
