Inspection

Carefully clean and inspect all parts. Make sure that the oil holes in the idler gear hub and cylinder block are open and clean.

New specifications are as follows:

Idler Gear: Bushing Bore Diameter

(Finished) .••• Gear End-Play.

Idler Gear Hub: Hub Diameter

1. 9998- 2.0007" 0.003- 0.007"

1. 996-1. 997" Running Clearance

(Gear-to-Hub) •• • ,0.0028-0.0047"

If the flanged idler gear bushings are worn, remove the bushing half from each side of the gear, then install new bushings and ream them to an inside diameter of 1. 998- 2.0007".

Installing The Engine Idler Gear and Retiming the Engine

To install the engine idler gear and retime the engine with camshaft gear, injection pump drive gear and crankshaft gear installed, proceed as follows:

1. If the hub was removed, clean the hub and the housing thoroughly, then carefully tap it into place, using a wooden block.

Fig. 39 (Removing or Installing Engine Idler Gear)

NOTE: Due to the offset holes, the idler gear hub can be installed in only one position.

2. Turn the crankshaft until the keyway in the crankshaft gear is straight up (No. 1 and 4 pistons at T. D. C.).

3. With the rocker arm shaft assembly released, rotate the camshaft gear and the injection pump gear until their timing marks are approximately aligned with the center line of the idler gear hub.

4. Install the idler gear as shown in Fig. 39, so that its three timing marks align with those on the crankshaft gear, injection pump gear and camshaft gear.

5. Make sure that all timing marks are aligned, as shown in Fig. 34, then install the idler gear retainer and self-locking nuts. Tighten the idler gear nuts to 21-24 ft. lbs. torque.

NOTE: If idler gear end-play exceeds 0.007" install a new retainer.

6. Secure the rocker arm shaft assembly in place and adjust the valve clearance, then complete reassembly.

REMOVE STEERING RAM FROM TRACTOR

It is not practical to remove the steering ram assembly by removing the tractor side frame, as there would be difficulty retiming steering gear with gear rack. Therefore, remove the front support assembly from tractor, and refer to the disassembly and assembly procedures.

DISASSEMBLE STEERING RAM

Remove the retaining flange from cylinder assembly. Remove pin attaching the gear rack to piston rod assembly. Remove the piston rod guide assembly from cylinder. Remove piston and rod assembly from cylinder. Remove and replace D-ring seals.

ASSEMBLE STEERING RAM

Thoroughly clean and lubricate inside of cylinder assembly. Install D-ring seal in groove of piston assembly and install sealing ring over D-ring. The wear ring seldom needs replacing.

Remove seal and back-up ring from inner groove of guide assembly. Install back-up ring in front position of groove, then install D-ring in rear position. Install D-ring in groove at outer diameter of guide. Lubricate seal rings and carefully assemble piston rod through guide assembly. Carefully install this assembly to cylinder. Attach gear rack to piston rod with head end of pin on tooth side of gear rack. Retain pin by peening, being careful not to deflect the ears of rod.

REMOVE AND DISASSEMBLE

If it becomes necessary to disassemble any of the valve sections, remove the valve stack from tractor. Thoroughly clean valve and oil line connections before di sconnecting lines. Cap all line connections. Remove valve stack from tractor. Remove tie bolts from valve stack and separate all sections. Remove and replace all O-ring seals between sections. Use caution while separating sections so the check valve spring and poppet do not become lost or misplaced.

Clean or remove any paint from lever end of valve plunger. Remove the two screws and spacers attaching plunger cap to valve housing. Grasp the plunger spring and slide the plunger assembly from valve housing. The plunger spring is somewhat easier to remove or replace by providing a fixtur e of some sort that will hold the spring at its compressed length. Remove adjusting screw (Item 20) and shake out spring (Item 13) and spring guide (Item 12).

Remove screw assembly (Item 19) retaining the plunger centering spring. Remove spring

and washer (Item 16). Carefully slide the plunger sleeve from plunger and gently release the four detent balls (3/16" Dia.) so they do not become lost. Dump the detent spring (Item 11); detent cam (Item 10) and poppet valve (Item 9) out in palm of hand. The O-ring seal inside of plunger sleeve is the same part as Item 6. Remove seal plate (Item 4) to replace wiper seal (Item 5) and O-ring seal (Item 6).

ASSEMBLE REMOTE RAM SECTION

Place the stern end of poppet valve (Item 9) through detent cam (Item 10) and insert into end of valve plunger. Holding valve plunger in a horizontal position, place detent spring (Item 11) on the spring seat end of detent cam (Item 10) and use spring to push parts into place in valve plunger.

Replace. O-ring seal (Item 6) inside plunger sleeve (Item 15) and place sleeve over end of plunger. Do not cover the four holes for the detent balls. Place the four detent balls in the four holes in plunger (using Lubriplate to retain balls if necessary), and slide the sleeve over the detent balls (3/16" Dia.). By holding

PRESSURE RELEASE FOR DETENT - SELF-CANCEL

PRESSURE PASSAGE

VALVE SPRING

Under normal working conditions, the poppet valve stays on its seat in plunger. The pressure passage at center of plunger is connected with the tractor ram passage when control valve is in the lift position. In case of remote ram valve, this pressure passage is connected to ram passage, both in lift or lower position.

With the plunger in the neutral or hold position' the detent balls are midway between the detent notches in sleeve. The plunger centering spring positions and keeps the plunger in the neutral position. The sketch shown is for a double acting remote ram valve.

When the plunger is moved, either to the lift or the lowering position, the detent balls engage the detent notches in sleeve. The detent

spring pressure against the detent cam holds these balls in this engaged position. When the ram reaches the end of its stroke, the pressure build-up unseats the poppet valve in the plunger. This permits oil pressure to force the detent cam against the detent spring, compressing the spring.

As the oil pressure forces the detent cam against the detent spring the detent balls are released from the notches in the detent sleeve. This permits the centering spring to move the plunger to the neutral position and the selfcanceling function has been accomplished. The adjusting screw at end of plunger increases or decreases the pressure on the poppet valve spring. If the valve does not self-cancel at rated engine speed, slowly back out screw a small amount at a time until it does.

To disassemble or assemble this section of valve stack, refer to information for the remote ram section. The internal parts of these two sections are similar and the disassembly or assembly would be the same.

Item 8 is the adjusting valve (screw) for setting the rate of lower. This is done with the valve in the TRACTION BOOSTER position. To lower slower, turn valve in. To lower faster, turn valve out. Item 10 is a valve assembly used to seal off the tractor ram passage from the sump passage.

Item 22 is the self-canceling adjusting screw. If the valve self-cancels before the ram is extended, or if the valve does not self-cancel, adjustment of this screw is necessary.

With the engine operating at 1800 RPM, and valve self-cancels before the ram extends (before the load is raised), turn screw clockwise a small amount at a time until the ram extends. If the valve does not self-cancel, turn screw counter-clockwise a small a:rn.ount at a time until it does self-cancel.

DISASSEMBLE VALVE

10

To disassemble any of the valve sections, the valve stack should be removed from tractor, and the line connections capped or plugged. Thoroughly clean valve stack before removing the tie bolts. Remove the plunger cap (Item 15). spacer (Item 14) and plunger spring (Item 13). Grasp end of plunger and gently slide from valve housing.

The seal plate, wiper seal and O-ring seal will be removed with plunger. Remove the capscrew and spring seat from plunger, if replacement of parts are neces sary. Remove seal plate, wiper seal and O-ring seal from opposite end of housing. Try the fit of plunger in housing bore for freedom of travel. There should not be any binding or tight spots.

The plunger bore in housing is honed to a diameter of .56295" to .56325". The outside diameter of plunger after chrome plating is . 56240" to .56255". This provides a plunger to housing clearance of .00040" to .00085". If plunger binds in housing bore, polish the bore or plunger surfac e until fr ee of all binding.
