welCome to the 2012–2013 allianCe JustiCe and Compassion Gift CataloGue!

Our teams of International Workers are ministering

among people in over 40 countries in four regions that

we refer to as the Silk Road, Caribbean Sun, Desert

Sand, and Asian Spice. Many work among the poor and

vulnerable where compassion initiatives are an essential

part of communicating the Gospel.

The message of the Gospel includes the promise of

forgiveness of sin and the transformation of people. This

transformation means that those who follow Jesus will

grow in their capacity to seek justice for the oppressed,

and have compassion for the sick, poor, the marginalized,

and the imprisoned. God is a God of compassion and

it is our responsibility, as his followers, to reflect that

compassion and care to the world! It is our vision that as

a result of this kind of ministry, we will see communities

transformed by Christ as they experience love and

compassion and embrace it for themselves!

Our compassion work is funded through Approved

Special project funds. In this catalogue we have

identified specific items that are related to tangible

projects that truly impact needy people. We invite you

to purchase a gift in honour of someone, or to share the

experience as a family, small group, or youth group and

raise funds for your selected projects. By participating,

you will assist us in communicating the love of Jesus as

our teams come alongside those with incredible needs.

Blessings!

$25mosQuito netsYour gift of $25 will provide two families with

The United Nations Human Development Report ranks Niger in the bottom 2 of 187 countries. Many

people live on less than $2/day. Our C&MA team is committed to seeing the lives of the Fulani and

Tuareg people of Niger transformed both spiritually and physically. According to UNICEF, this region

of Africa has the world’s highest mortality rate for children under five. Relying mainly on subsistence

farming in an unpredictable climate, undernourished children are especially susceptible to preventable

diseases like malaria. Join with us as we seek to overcome preventable deaths in Niger.

In Niger, a country largely covered by the Sahara Desert, over half the population struggles

to find water for their daily needs. Some walk miles to access even unclean water, carrying it

home in buckets on their heads. Others build wells in dry soil that often collapse during the

rainy season. By reinforcing existing wells and digging new ones, our workers are bringing life to

people in a dry and dusty land.

Niger Vocational Training School

www.justiceandcompassion.com // 5

Currently, our C&MA team in Niger is investing

in young Tuareg women and men, empowering

and educating them for a better future.

The Niger Vocational Training School for girls

at risk is geared toward girls between the

ages of 12 and 19 who are at high risk for

early marriage, early childbirth, abuse and

prostitution. This school serves as a vocational

training centre focusing on spirituality, health

and hygiene, nutrition, self-esteem, building

life skills and trades training in sewing,

embroidery and business. We know that

educated girls are more likely to earn greater

incomes, raise smaller families, have healthier

children, participate in political processes and

send her own children to school. In addition to

education, these girls also receive something

of immense value—their parents’ promise not

to give them in marriage until completion of

the two year program.

Our young men’s apprenticeship program is

targeted toward hard working Tuareg men

who have a desire to improve their lives and

care for their families through new skills and

trades. Our team is mentoring young men and

combining this with skills training in welding,

construction and small business skills.

Animals for Loan

The Fulani people, who depend on herds for their livelihood, have a tradition in which someone lends a

female animal (sheep, goat or cow) to a friend in need. The recipient looks after the animal until it has

young and the young is weaned. They then keep the young and return the mother to its owner.

In Guinea, public services do not care for unwanted newborns. In response to this, our team established

a Baby Rescue Centre. This Centre receives abandoned infants, provides immediate medical attention

go to school. Our Alliance team is seeking to minister to this vulnerable group by providing meal

programs and the funds needed to enable these precious ones to attend school.

$80mediCal CareYour gift of $80 makes it possible for a patient to

receive proper care and medication for one month.

Health care in Serbia is very poor, especially for people diagnosed with cancer. Without enough

resources, terminally ill children and adults are sent home without care or medication. Through this Silk

Road ministry to terminally ill patients, opportunities are created for teams to visit, minister to and care

for those dying of cancer.

Rehab Centre

10 // we can all give. we invite you . . .

Drug addiction and alcoholism has become a fast-growing problem in Serbia with an estimated

300,000 to 500,000 drug users. With alcohol, the situation is even worse where 83% of the population

is believed to abuse alcohol (Institute for Public Health). The good news is that these people are often

very open to the Gospel through the ministry of the Rehabilitation Centre.

$75reCovery proGramYour gift of $75 will cover the cost for one week of room and board, counseling, physical therapy, and

discipleship. The Silk Road Rehab Centre seeks to allow men with addictions the chance to become

It is estimated that anywhere between 40-60% of citizens on this Asian Spice Island are unable to

read or write. At the same time, it seems that many in this region suffer from illness and preventable

disease because of their poverty and distance from healthcare. Health problems are often exacerbated

by illiteracy. Many women are unable to fill out government forms that would entitle them and their

children to free medical care. Our Spice team is offering literacy classes for women while incorporating

health clinics for their families.

Sustainable Village Health Care

The Sustainable Village Health Care project works among seven different tribes of people in Papua,

Indonesia. Many of these tribes live too far from urban centres to receive necessary care. In these tribes,

it is not uncommon for women to bear 10 children, yet see only half of these children reach adulthood.

This is most often caused by complications in childbirth, poor nutrition and lack of medical assistance.

Prenatal education and medical care is needed to reduce the extremely high rates of infant and maternal

deaths in this people group.

In this Asian Spice country, the cost of fruits and vegetables has escalated beyond the reach of the poor.

Living in an urban centre, many families do not have either the skills to grow their own food or the land

on which to do so. Our team has introduced Urban Gardening, a technique in which small community

plots or individual containers are used to grow vegetables where space is limited. The Urban Garden

project has allowed many people the opportunity to supplement their diets and prevent malnutrition.

The project has also opened the door to friendship and sharing of the Gospel in this region.

Tricked, Trafficked, Treasured

The Tricked, Trafficked, Treasured

project seeks to minister to the

victims of human trafficking.

This program has two locations.

One that ministers to women

who have been trapped in the

sex trade and another site that

seeks to bring healing to men

recovering from drug addiction.

Through this ministry, our

International Workers have

an opportunity to express

God’s love in tangible and

practical ways. The counseling,

discipleship, skills training and

employment opportunities

created by this project are vital

to help women and men heal

and reintegrate into society

with dignity and hope. It is

amazing to see the growth and

transformation that occur when

these people come to realize

that they are treasured by God.

There are 300,000 – 400,000 Nicaraguans living in Costa Rica hoping for a better life; 30% live in

extreme poverty. Even though schooling is free, many children cannot attend because they cannot afford

Caribbean Island Ministries

Severe restrictions have been

placed on the economy of an

area of the Caribbean Sun

region. This reality causes many

to live in extreme poverty. Our

team started a microeconomic

project to help the members

of Alliance churches prosper

economically so they could

be sustained through tithing.

This program has expanded to

other denominations in order

to foster a spirit of unity among

the people of God and to partner

together in reaching this nation

for Christ. Church members who

have experienced this blessing

developed the vision to invite

people in the neighbourhood to
