EDITORIALDear Friends of Alliance Francaise

It is now the time for good resolutions and wishes. The entire team of Alliance Française of Dar es Salaam joins me to wish you a year of delightfulness and spices that makes the days full of joy. As for good resolutions, we are committed to a better communication towards each of our guests and we will try to improve our facilities from the beginning of this year. I hope all Alliance Française students will continue having a pleasure in learning our language; learning a foreign language is an opportunity for a new challenge but more particularly is the opportunity to meet a new culture. We are all aware of it. The Alliance Française of Dar es Salaam wishes good luck to Laura who takes a new direction (!) and welcomes Amandine from the Reunion Island. The cultural program of the beginning of the year is expected to be very rich especially with the arrival of a talented jazz group and the first choice film program. A very beautiful New Year to all and hope to welcome many of you in 2016

“That’s what I wanted to show in Aya: an Africa without the . . . war and famine, an Africa that endures despite everything because, as we say back home, life goes on.” --Marguerite Abouet Ivory Coast, 1978. Family and friends gather at Aya’s house every evening to watch the country’s first television ad campaign promoting the fortifying effects of Solibra, “the strong man’s beer.” It’s a golden time, and the nation, too--an oasis of affluence and stability in West Africa--seems fueled by something wondrous.Aya tells the story of its nineteen-year-old heroine, the studious and clear-sighted Aya, her easygoing friends Adjoua and Bintou, and their meddling relatives and neighbors. It’s a breezy and wryly funny account of the desire for joy and freedom, and of the simple pleasures and private troubles of everyday life in Yop City. An unpretentious and gently humorous story of an Africa we rarely see-spirited, hopeful, and resilient--Aya won the 2006 award for Best First Album at the Angoulême International Comics Festival.

Jour de féte(France)

Alliance FrançaiseENTRANCE FREE

Jour de Fête tells the story of an inept and easily distracted French mailman who frequently interrupts his duties to converse with the local inhabitants, as well as inspect the traveling fair that has come to his small community. Influenced by too much wine and a newsreel account of rapid transportation methods used by the United States postal system, he goes to hilarious lengths to speed the delivery of mail while aboard his bicycle. In Jour de Fête, several characteristics of Tati’s work appear for the first time in a full-length film. The film is largely a visual comedy, though dialogue is still used to tell part of the story, at one point using a background character as a narrator. Sound effects are a key element of the film, as Tati makes imaginative use of voices and other background noises to provide humorous effect. The film introduces what would be a key theme in Tati films, the over-reliance of Western society on technology to solve its (perceived) problems. The film was shot largely in the village of Sainte-Sévère-sur-Indre and its surroundings; many of the locals played the roles of extras.Director: Jacques Tati

IFA Band(Tanzania)

Alliance FrançaiseENTRANCE FREE

Jafari Rashid Igomba who is the only blind member of the group was the founding member of the group was born 26 years ago. His love for music pushed to visit rehearsals of a local band (BABA TONI) in his home village “Ligama” and this is where he learned to play acoustic guitar. In the year 2000 BABA TONI band ceased performing and Jafari decided to move to Ifakara district in Morogoro region, where he met with new friends who were also interested in music. This is how IFA Band was born in 2002, and stated performing around the town.

IFA is a mobile band, which moves from one place to another entertaining people. Basically it can be described as a street band made up by 6 young boys. To reach Tanzanian Business capital (Dar es Salaam) the band had to travel for almost a month from one village to another because they could not afford to pay for direct bus fare. In their street performances IFA plays a mix of Copies if demanded by the audience, However the band has composed more than 30 own songs in different styles like Rhumba, traditional, Bongo Flava and “Muziki wa Dansi” rhythms.

Elections are a constant focus of attention throughout Africa. Recent years have seen stories of malpractice and violence, but also examples of uncontested victories, peaceful transitions and remarkable popular turn-out.

This unique exhibition, created by the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA) and originally hosted by the Nairobi National Museum, features campaign material collected all around Africa as well as iconic photographs from historic moments. It showcases both the changing technologies of elections and the development of political culture. The exhibition encompasses a wide range of much debated topics, on the continent and beyond.

Media and Elections Alliance FrançaiseENTRANCE FREE

Media are an essential part of democratic elections. Free elections are not only about giving citizens the freedom to vote, they are also about giving them the possibility to have adequate information about parties, policies, candidates and election process order for them to make informed decisions.

During elections, media have multiple roles: from serving as campaign platforms or public awareness tools on the electoral process, to being open forums for debates. They have both a watchdog role and the power to influence the vote. Recently, the emergence of social media has made the relation between media and elections even more complex. The first high level debate of this year proposed by the French Embassy will discuss all the aspects of this many-faceted relation, with the participation of high-level experts from France and Tanzania. The debate will be followed by the opening of the exhibition “Voting matters. Citizenship and technologies of African elections”. Join us for a night of lively and fascinating exchanges!

Les Contes de la nuit(France)

Alliance FrançaiseENTRANCE FREE

Director and animator Michel Ocelot stated that “I have discovered something rather agreeable: I am a sorcerer. I have two powers; that of producing beauty, and that of creating characters and actions that do not exist, yet which take us on a journey through different worlds, as if on a magic carpet”. Born from this irrepressible urge to create is Les contes de la nuit, the story of a girl, a boy and an old man who meet every night at a small movie theater to invent marvelous stories. Les contes de la nuit plays with two dimensions and 3D, with darkness and with intense colors, allowing us to relive the pleasure of a good story.

The EU Delegation is proud to launch a booklet celebrating 40 years of cooperation and partnership between the United Republic of Tanzania and the European Union. Looking back at the making of what Tanzania and the EU are today, it offers testimonies and examples of how diverse the relationship has become.
