Welcome to the first edition of “Allendale Life.” This newsletter is designed to keep you updated on the latest news and happenings at The Allendale Community for Senior Living. We have come a long way since our inception in 1967, and this inaugural issue highlights an active year of new community initiatives, key staff additions, notable campus upgrades and resident achievements.

Although the last year has been one marked by change, our greatest accomplishment is the high regard residents and their families have for The Allendale Community. Time

and again they share stories with me of a life lived more fully since choosing our senior campus as their home. For every senior we serve, and for those we have yet to meet, The Allendale Community will keep the doors to

a meaningful life wide open.

We’re very excited about what the future holds, and look forward to sharing it with you. As always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions.

Warmest Regards, Dr. Timothy Giancarlo, President

The Allendale Community for Mature Living has launched a comprehensive rebranding initiative that incorporates a name change and an updated visual identity. The new name, “The Allendale Community

for Senior Living,” more accurately reflects the community’s position as a premier continuum-of-care senior residence and healthcare campus.

The Allendale Atrium Lobby

(Right) Employees of The Allendale Community for Senior Living recently marked the launch of the community’s rebranding initiative with a celebratory staff party at Carlton Court. (Far Right) New campus signage reflects The Allendale Community’s new name, redesigned logo and updated visual identity.

The rebranding also includes a new company logo and a redesigned website. A new tagline captures The Allendale Community for Senior Living’s promise and mission: “Care you can trust.”

Last year, Dr. Timothy Giancarlo became president of the family-owned and operated Allendale Community. His progressive vision and commitment to residents and their families is the driving force behind many of these new campus initiatives. “Since our inception in 1967, we have grown and expanded the scope of our services and level of care,” he said. “The new branding is designed to bridge the gap between who we were 46 years ago and who we are today, and highlights our continued commitment to creating a well-rounded community focused on quality senior living with superior medical care and support.”

Among the most visual elements of the rebranding is a new company logo. “The updated brand logo depicts a flourishing tree, which conveys a long-standing commitment to the growth and ‘fullness of life’

we promote and support at The Allendale Community,” Giancarlo said. Meanwhile, a redesigned website, www.allendalecommunity.com, features a more user-friendly design and enhanced resources.

Residents already are enjoying a number of completed campus improvements including new outdoor landscaping, and cosmetic

enhancements to The Atrium’s game room, gym and 24-hour movie theater. “This is a very exciting period of growth for our company,” said Giancarlo. “Although we have made many changes, The Allendale Community remains committed to delivering the highest level of personalized care to residents and their families.”

When The Allendale Community

resident Stella M. Dukes passed

away last year, she left an

amazing legacy behind. An

accomplished painter, sculptor

and photographer, Dukes was

a lifelong lover of the arts who

studied at the New School, the

Art Students League of New York,

and with John Howard Sanden at

the Portrait Institute.

The Stella Dukes Memorial Fund

for the Arts was established

to honor Dukes’ memory, and

supports a full calendar of

theater, dance and musical

performances at The Allendale

Community. Residents have

enjoyed a number of enriching

programs including “An Evening

in Paris” and “Echoes of Sinatra.”

On May 21 at 7 p.m., The Stella

Dukes Memorial Fund for the

Arts will present a Memorial Day

concert with The Ramsey Winds,

a 50-piece orchestra.

Stella M. DukesLeaves Enduring Legacy With summer vacation season fast

approaching, full-time caregivers and the seniors they love can get a much-needed break by arranging a short-term respite stay at The Alllendale Community for Senior Living.

The Emergency Respite and Short-Term Stay Program provides seniors with the same amenities and care as permanent residents, including meals, medication management and access to a range of social activities. Guests benefit from a safe, supportive environment that includes daily social, educational and cultural programs; restaurant-style dining; and flexible healthcare and wellness options, if needed.

“Care giving is a very demanding and stressful job, and even the most dedicated individuals need time to re-charge,” said Dr. Timothy Giancarlo, president of The Allendale Community. “Our respite care program provides the break caregivers need, along with the peace of mind that comes with knowing their loved ones will receive the required attention, care and medical support.”

Services include assistance with daily tasks such as dressing and

bathing, and wellness assessments. Therapeutic treatments, such as occupational, physical and speech therapy, also can be administered by professionals associated with

The Allendale Community’s on-site Rehabilitation

Center. The Atrium’s array of programs encourages short-term stay guests to rediscover old hobbies or pursue

new interests.

This winter’s record-breaking cold temperatures and snowfall

made caregivers aware of the need to be prepared for emergency situations. Short-term respite care services are equally valuable when weather conditions are expected to knock out heat, power and telephone communications, and heavy snowfall impedes traffic, making it difficult to reach a senior in need. “Although the arrangement is temporary, many of our short-term residents decide to become full-time residents of The Atrium because they have forged new friendships or rekindled old ones,” Giancarlo said. “For adults who have been reluctant to make the move to senior housing, respite care is a great way to increase their comfort level through a first-hand, trial experience.”

Atrium Assisted Living resident

Adrian Nader has had several

satisfying careers throughout his

lifetime, but it’s a love of words that

brings him the fondest memories.

Visitors only need to ask once to

have him read an original poem

from his published volume titled,

“Echoes That Last,” and he gladly

complies.

A long-time River Edge resident,

Nader began his communications

career as editor of his high school

yearbook in Marietta, Ohio. He

later served as a communications

officer in the Navy during

World War II. Jobs followed as

a contributing columnist for his

hometown newspaper; a freelance

magazine writer; and editor of RN

Magazine, published by Medical

Economics in Oradell. In between,

he taught at New Lexington

High School in Ohio and Wagner College on Staten Island, N.Y. Over the years, he nurtured a love of poetry.

Nader has written more than 100 poems, 24 of which are compiled in “Echoes that Last,” which was published in 1999. The book is dedicated to his wife, Martha. Ten of the poems have appeared in other publications including “American Album of Poetry” and “Sound of Poetry.”

Publishing the poems was a long-delayed yet important part of creating Nader’s lasting legacy. As he notes in the book’s foreword, “What urged me on was a mental picture of some stranger finding them and consigning them, unread, to the paper pick-up. Poems are written to be read. This is a much happier ending for them.”

The Allendale Community for Senior Living is pleased to announce a number of key staff changes to its leadership team. Kathy Manger has been named administrator, while Dr. Evan Kushner has assumed the role of medical director. Also, Kinga Weglinski, RN, and Kathleen Kelly Malaver, CALA, were promoted to director of nursing and certified assisted living administrator, respectively.

The staff changes follow the appointment of Dr. Timothy Giancarlo as president of the

family-owned and operated senior living campus last year. Dr. Giancarlo represents the company’s second generation of leadership. He succeeded his father, Dr. Hector R. Giancarlo, who stepped down as president after nearly 50 years at Allendale’s helm.

“These executives bring years of industry experience and innovative strategies to their new roles, and I am pleased to welcome Kathy, Dr. Kushner, Kinga and Kathleen Kelly to our leadership team,” said Dr. Timothy Giancarlo. “Their

credentials and compassion for seniors strengthen us on many fronts as we move into an exciting period of growth. Our team is committed to creating a community where every resident leads a happy, fulfilling life.”

Key Changes Announced to Management Team

An active social life is essential to a senior’s long-term health and well-being. The Senior Social Club at The Atrium Assisted Living provides ambulatory older adults with a safe, secure environment complemented by a range of activities designed to foster peer companionship and enrich the lives of participants.

For a modest fee, the Senior Social Club provides daytime supervision for adults in a group setting. Along with a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snacks served in The Atrium’s restaurant-style dining room, participants enjoy a range of meaningful activities, planned day-trips and social outings. The Senior Social Club operates weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and participants

are welcome to enroll for any number of days. Round-trip or one-way local transportation is available.

“The Senior Social Club combines the independence of living at home, with the security and social benefits of being part of an active community,” said Mary Stampleman, ADC, Director of Therapeutic Recreation and Public Relations. “Aside from the opportunity to socialize and make new friends, the activities we offer help to engage the mind,

strengthen the body and brighten the spirit. There’s something here for everyone.”

Senior Social Club members have access to The Atrium’s community spaces, including an on-site cinema, game room, arcade, Internet Café, library, gym, activities center, 1950s-style diner, miniature golf and an outdoor courtyard. Club members also enjoy a

full calendar of guest speakers, and cultural and musical performances.

“Advantages of the Senior Social Club go beyond socializing with peers. By offering enjoyable pastimes and activities, we’re helping participants to maintain a healthy state of mind, pursue existing hobbies and interests, and discover exciting new experiences,” said Stampleman.
