SCIENCE OLYMPIAD CODE OF ETHICSStudent participants are expected to compete in tournament events with an honest effort to follow the rules and the spirit of the competition. The goal of the competition is to give one’s best effort, while displaying honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship.

Students, coaches, parents, and guests are expected to display courtesy and respect toward Olympiad officials, other teams, and guests of the Olympiad.

Failure to show honesty and/or courtesy by a participant, coach, or guest of a team may result in the disqualification of a team from that event, the entire tournament, or future tournaments.

On November 10, 2015, the Michigan Board of Education voted to adopt the Michigan Science Standards. These standards, which are based on the Next Generation Science Standards, provide the groundwork for engaging students and teachers across the state of Michigan in meaningful science teaching and learning.

Since the last set of K–12 science standards for Michigan were adopted in 2005, the understanding and skillsets of science and engineering, as well as our general understanding of the natural world, has changed considerably. Research on learning and science education has provided a better understanding of how children best learn science and related skills and concepts necessary for science literacy.

This research-based vision for the learning of science and engineering is the foundation for the Framework for K–12 Science Education, which was used to develop the newly adopted standards. Based upon the framework, these Michigan standards are a set of student performance expectations. These performance expectations incorporate three main elements:

• Disciplinary Core Ideas Science specific concepts in the life, earth, and physical sciences

• Science and Engineering Practices The practices of engaging in scientific investigation to answer questions, and engineering design to solve problems

• Cross-cutting Concepts Conceptual ideas common to all areas of science

This three-dimensional framework provides a new foundation for all educators to focus on preparing the next generation of learners and leaders in Michigan. In addition, these expectations are interwoven across disciplines, including connections to language arts and mathematics.

Through participating in Science Olympiad, students:

• engage with challenging and motivational events that incorporate content from the various science disciplines (biology, earth science, chemistry, physical science, and technology);

• foster a working understanding of science and engineering practices; and

• build knowledge of those conceptual ideas common to all areas of science.

Within the structure of the tournament events, there is a balance between the three dimensions of learning that are needed for our students to be prepared for the STEM careers that await them.

Join us as we work to bring science to life for our competitors through providing opportunities for them to see how science works through conceptual understanding, problem solving, and innovation and — in the process — provide them with new directions for their future!
