Welcome to the Mountain Maryland 2016 Studio Tour. This year is the 14th year of the annual event and we’re happy to say that each year it

keeps getting better. We know you’ll enjoy driving around our beautiful countryside during prime fall foliage and exploring our charming, friendly towns as you visit the studios of talented local artists.

With this guidebook you will have access to an arts experience you won’t be able to find anywhere else. Every year, artists who have been drawn to our beautiful area literally open their doors to visitors. This is your chance to visit with Mountain Maryland artists where they live and work, learn about their techniques and, of course, purchase some art for your home or as a gift. Whether it is painting, photography, furniture, ceramics or jewelry, you’ll find it on the Studio Tour.

If you are not sure where to start your tour, we recommend visiting the Allegany Arts Council’s art gallery at 9 N. Centre Street in Cumberland. There you will find an exciting exhibit featuring the work of Studio Tour participants. You can browse the exhibition and then map out a plan for visiting the studios of your choice! This exhibition will open at the Allegany Arts Council on October 15, 2016, and run through November 12. The opening reception, to which you are invited, will be held on Saturday, October 15 from 6 to 8 pm. This reception is another great opportunity to meet Studio Tour aritsts. While you are driving around, consider using the Studio Tour website (www.artsaleandtour.com), which has artist information and a map so you’ll be able to find your way around easily.

On behalf of the arts community of Mountain Maryland, I welcome you to our region and hope you enjoy your visit.

See you soon in Mountain Maryland!

Terry Bachman 3Woodworking & Photography

T his year Terry is pleased to display an entirely new body

of work, highlighted by a series of hand-worked hardwood boxes. These pieces are carved, dyed and/or painted in striking patterns. Smaller than works featured in past Tours, they make excellent gifts or accents for your home. Terry’s distinctive photographs in handmade frames are also available and furniture and sculpture will be on hand, too. Terry is delighted to welcome back Patricia Hilton to join him at the gallery, showing her masterful pastels and paintings.

Blacksmithing has a very long history. Kenny applies traditional

and more contemporary techniques of forging to his design, furthering his goals of creating art and preserving ancient craftsmanship. Using a coal forge, hammer and anvil, he makes tools that enable him to hone his craft and create art and functional objects. Blacksmithing also provides the opportunity to “think out of the box,” allowing him to design to suit his needs. Because working sculpturally in metal often results in a less predictable flow, and perspective shifts depending on the angle from which a piece is viewed, Kenny’s metalwork is a tangible result of exploration and discovery.

Elizabeth Levine Braun 5Glass Art

Elizabeth has been a commission artist since 1986, when she

opened Elizabeth’s Glassworks LLC, a custom art glass studio. Working in architectural glass, using traditional leaded glass, copper foil, sandblasting, as well as non-traditional techniques, has been her privilege and her passion. She was a creative writing major in college and considers much of her sculptural work to be a form of visual poetry. In 2010 she moved to West Virginia, and her studio is her big barn on the Little Cacapon River. A lot of her work now reflects the peace and beauty of the natural world that surrounds her.

Tony collects “treasures” he finds at flea markets while searching

for old barn wood, windows, doors, etc. for his historic remodeling jobs. He uses these found objects to create sculptures. Visualization of the finished product is key to everything he does. From old pulleys, antique hardware, farm tools, etc. he creates quirky creatures. Some are whimsical, some have a sci-fi influence, some are functional and some are—well—kind of weird. Tony has shown his work and won awards at several galleries. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Maryland State Arts Council and of the Gilchrist Gallery and Museum of the Arts.

Frank’s photographs express the natural world in an

unconventional manner. He stresses strong light and dark values, preferring black-and-white compositions, emphasizes patterns that emerge from natural disorder and creates abstracts that render the mundane into fresh viewpoints. His approach to photography is very deliberate. He engages in the act of creating and finds inspiration along the way. He has lived in the mountains of western Maryland since 2008, having relocated from the Washington, D.C. area.

of the Appalachian Pastel League, she finds ways to both create and demonstrate, ever striving to influence and bring pastels to the forefront of our growing arts community. She will be offering a free demonstration, “Impasto and Pastels,” on October 22, starting at 1 PM. Throughout the event there will be ongoing demonstrations of various techniques. One or more of the pieces completed will be raffled off to one lucky visitor. Pat’s paintings are loosely realistic, with interpretive color. She creates

or uses the color of the painting surface as one element, building on it through a combination of color fields and marks, working toward a painting that has both abstract and realistic elements. Each painting contains a spark: the “why’”of the painting—such as a particular quality of light or a dynamic pattern of shadows, settling fog, sparkling water. Pat enjoys working “en plein air” and is inspired by quality of light and pattern. She has lived in the mountains of western Maryland since 2008, having relocated from the Washington D.C. area.Directions: Traveling West: Take I-68W to Exit 43B. When Darrin moved back to Allegany County more

than 10 years ago, his ideas about photography changed. “An obsession with capturing images in the urban environment always existed,” he says, “until I reacquainted myself with the beauty of this area.” He now documents the people, mountainscapes and river systems of the Appalachian Mountains. He has embraced the “non-traditional” digital world of photography, pushing the limits of what was once not possible in the darkroom. He was recently awarded “Best of Show” as well as viewer’s choice in the first annual Allegany National Photographic Competition and Exhibition.

After graduating with a design degree from Frostburg State

University, Steve spent two years in Japan, which had a profound effect on his perspective as an artist. His goal when throwing, glazing, altering, decorating or firing is to create surfaces that reflect the process and forces that go into turning a piece of clay into a functional piece of pottery. He especially loves making mugs: “I make every mug with the hope that it will become part of somebody’s daily morning ritual,” he says. During this year’s tour, weather permitting, Steve will include demonstrations of the Raku firing process.
