ALLAN HANCOCK COLLEGE NONCREDIT COURSE OUTLINE Prefix & No.: HOEC 7104A Title: Dress Forms and Draped Design Total Hours: 60 - 68 Hours/Week: 4 TOP Code: 1303.00 Lecture: 2 Lab 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students custom fit a dress form that duplicates both figure and posture to use as an aid in fitting and as a base for draped fashion design. Through various techniques, students learn how to drape fabric over the form to create custom fashion designs. Students learn how to make basic bodice and skirt patterns from the fabric drape and write instructions to construct the garment. INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: Students will demonstrate the ability to:

1. Create a dress form that duplicates a specific body. 2. Use draping techniques to create patterns from original designs or photographs.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Take accurate measurements of the body and posture. 2. Create or modify a dress form to conform to specific measurements. 3. Drape a basic bodice and skirt. 4. Draft a basic sleeve from measurements. 5. Use draping techniques to create a pattern for a simple garment. 6. Write instructions for sewing the garment.

Adjusting form for posture variations Creating and fitting a form cover Concept of draping Preparing muslin Measuring and marking tools Draping a basic bodice Draping a basic skirt Fitting the muslin toile Transferring design from fabric to paper pattern Writing sewing instructions METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Lecture, demonstration, guided practice Videos, DVDs, Internet demonstrations and resources EVALUATION: Students will conduct a self-evaluation of project using a general rubric of quality standards. Instructor will evaluate garment and advise student in skills development. Peer evaluation may be utilized. Evaluation method will be customized as appropriate for students’ goals.
