When white light rays hit something, some colors in the white light are absorbed and some are reflected. The color that is being reflected is the color of the object. All other colors are being absorbed.

Page 6: All You Ever Wanted to Know About Light Watch and Learn…. Click the “TV”

For Example: Blue is being reflected all other colors are

being absorbed

Red is being reflected all other colors are being absorbed

Something that is white is reflecting off all the colors to the eye, so it appears white.

Something that is black is absorbing all the colors, so it appears to be black. Black is considered the absence of all colors.

Since darker colored materials absorb more light rays---darker colored materials are usually hotter

TRAVEL Light rays travel in a straight line unless

something causes it to change directions

Page 10: All You Ever Wanted to Know About Light Watch and Learn…. Click the “TV”

If light rays travel through something denser (thicker) than air, the light rays bend. This is called REFRACTION!

Page 11: All You Ever Wanted to Know About Light Watch and Learn…. Click the “TV”

Refraction is the bending of light rays DRAW these examples and add the refracted

rays: Empty Glass:

Ray is bent a little since it must go through the glass

Glass of Water: Ray is bent a little more since it must go through both the

glass and the water

Glass of Oil: Ray bent a lot more since it must go through the glass and

the oil is more dense

Examples of things that we use to refract light: Hand lens Eye glasses Microscopes Telescopes

REFLECTION is when light rays bounce off an object!!
