This year’s theme was “What Freedom Means to Me.” The contest is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. “This contest is to fos- ter thinking about free- dom,” said coordinator Marcheta Jacobson of the Auxiliary. “It’s good to get the students think- ing about the positive things of their country instead of focusing on the bad.” The Larned VFW and its Auxiliary sponsored a county-wide contest inviting all students to enter the contest. Nazareth Rio-Valles was awarded first place with her essay. She received a framed certificate, a pen, and a medal for her work. Adam Hands took second place, and Yeim Cordero-Valles took third, both also receiving a framed certificate and a pen. Holt is the Commander of the Larned Post and Perez is Adjutant. “Once again,” com- mented coordinator Marcheta Jacobson of the Auxiliary, “Pawnee Heights was the only school that wrote essays. They came from 6th grade teacher Britt Ewy and his sixth graders. We hope other classes and schools will partici- pate next time.” VFW and the VFW Auxiliary sponsor writing contest Turtle Tot Club, a series of nature-based programs developed for preschool- age children, ages 3 to 5, is scheduled for March at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. The one-hour programs, of- fered at no charge, intro- duce young children to the natural world around them with sensory expe- riences, while reinforc- ing colors, shapes, math and fine motor skills. When possible, sessions include outdoor time. Programs run from 10-11 a.m. There is a minimum enrollment of 6 and a maximum of 12 children. Children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver and pre- registration is required. To register for classes or for more information, call 620-566-1456 or 1-877-243-9268. This year’s programs start with “Busy Bees” on March 18. Children will investigate a bee’s world, after listening to a story. They’ll learn why bees are impor- tant to people, how bees dance and make a “busy” bee. Preregister by March 16. During March 25’s program, “Spring has Sprung”, children will explore outdoors, after listening to a story. They’ll look for signs of spring, play a game and make a “welcome spring” banner. Preregis- ter by March 23. TURTLE TOT CLUB - With magnifying glasses and safari hats, a group of preschoolers get ready to look for insects during a Turtle Tot Club program at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center.
