Preface
This book grew out of a desire to provide new, shortpieces of music to help my saxophone students improvetheir ability to read music. The parameters used incomposing this music were set forth in the sight readingguidelines for the Junior Band division first audition by the
South Carolina Band Directors Association.
While the parameters are oriented to a middle schoolaudience of grades 6-8, the selections included here willbe moderately to extremely difficult based on theexperience and abilities of the student.
The content herein was composed first and foremost asshort pieces of music, not exercises. Consideration of wasgiven tothe aspects of key, pitchrange, tempo, meter, rhythm, dynamics, articulation, and style during thecompositional process.

To know Wilton is to know a man who is truly amusician. He genuinely loves and respects musicand is vastly knowledgeable regarding its history, theory, and practice.
As a teacher, Wilton brings much to the table. Butmore important than his skill or his knowledge are his
respect for his students and his willingness to allowhis students to discover their own methods ofperforming and being musicians.
Any success I have had over my six years as hisstudent I whole heartedly attribute to his guidance asa teacher and a friend.
Mr. Elder has helped me learn how to set andachieve my goals, and since the beginning, he has
given me an edge against competing saxophonistsat the county, region and state levels.

Wilton Elder is THE best instructor any young
saxophonist could ask for. Ive been a student of hisfor three years. No matter how many times I maymess up, he always encourages me to keep trying. He works tirelessly, whether its a few minutes afterthe lesson for an explanation, or telling me aboutrecordings of other players to use in practice.
Lessons with Wilton are the high point of my week.Hes helped me so much in multiple aspects ofplaying, but best of all in jazz and scales. Hesextremely skilled as a musician, so I know Imgetting really good information. I hope to continuetaking lessons with him for many years to come.
I know Wilton as a performer and as a teacher ofmy 12 year old son. As an artist, Wilton is extremelyskilled, knowledgeable, versatile, and creative. As
an instructor, he is consistent, professional, andpatient.

Having taken lessons from Wilton Elder the majorityof my career at Wando, I can personally say that he
is an inspiring teacher. Not only did he help mereach the goals I set for myself, but he alsoencouraged me to develop new ones along the way.The success principles he taught me in lessonshave not only helped me in my music but haveguided me in dealing with everyday life challengesas well.
Wilton Elder tutors our son Josh Talsma for Alto
Saxophone. While we lived in Charleston SC Joshgot to have lessons in person for a year until wemoved to Texas. Wilton is fabulous with Josh! Joshhas taken all that he learned from Wilton andperformed extremely well at the All Region Bandthis year. Wilton goes above and beyond teachingthe kids not only the basics of the saxophone butalso helps to advance Joshs level of musicknowledge and scales.

We chose Wilton Elder because of his impressive
background as a well-versed performer andadvanced education in music. Our daughter hasthrived under his tutelageher skill set and all-around musical knowledge have improved.Wiltons can-do attitude is motivational, self-esteem building and has helped our daughterdevelop the confidence she needs to perform. We
look forward to working with him throughout ourdaughters high school years.
My son Jack has been taking lessons with WiltonElder for over two years. I know Jack would not bedoing as well as he is on saxophone withoutWiltons lessons. He is a very talented instructorand has helped Jack prepare for many concerts &auditions. He always has tasks for Jack to work on
between lessons, but he is also very good atfinding the students musical goals & helping themwork towards that. I highly recommend him.
