Background on the Gospel Reading by:
In this Sunday's Gospel, we continue to read from the section of Mark's Gospel that reports Jesus' journey to Jerusalem. Last Sunday we heard Jesus lament the particular challenges those with many possessions face in order to enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus then predicts his passion to the Twelve, who are amazed and afraid. In this part of Mark's Gospel, Jesus' words to his closest disciples seem to be intended to prepare them for the events that will occur in Jerusalem. In today's Gospel, James and John ask to be given seats of honor when Jesus enters into his glory. Once again, the disciples seem to be selective in what they hear Jesus say. They want to share Jesus' glory, but do not appear to understand that his glory will be preceded by his suffering. Jesus notes their lack of understanding and predicts the suffering they will endure for the sake of the Gospel. Jesus says that the honor they seek is not his to give. When the other ten hear what James and John have asked, Mark reports that they are indignant. Jesus takes the opportunity to teach them. Jesus explains the importance of service and sacrifice in the life of a disciple. In particular, he seems to be preparing the Twelve for their leadership roles in the emerging Christian community. Echoing the Gospel we heard several weeks ago (on the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Mark 9:33-37), Jesus acknowledges that his teaching is countercultural. In today's Gospel, Jesus contrasts the dynamics within the community of disciples with those shown by the rulers of the Gentiles.
Following Jesus' example of sacrificial love continues to be countercultural in our day as well. We might take this opportunity to consider our models of authority and examine our own exercise of authority. On whose example do we model our leadership?
Monday November 2, 2015 is All Souls' Day, a day of prayer for all our deceased brothers and sisters in the Church Family. On this day, we will remember in a special way all of our deceased loved ones and especially all deceased members of our parish family. Mass will be celebrated on All Souls' Day at 7:00 AM at the Church of St. Gregory, and at 12:10 PM and 7:00 PM at Our Lady of the Snows Church. All are invited to attend these special liturgies. During the 7:00 PM Mass of Remembrance, we will be remembering in a special way all of our brothers and sisters who have died during this past year. Family members of those in our parish who have died during this past year will receive a special invitation, however, all are invited and encouraged to participate in this Mass. If a close friend or relative of yours died during this past year (not from our parish) and you would like to have this person remembered in this special Mass please call Nettie at the parish office or sign the list in the back of the Church as you arrive for the 7:00 PM mass on All Souls Day. Light refreshments will be served in the Gathering Room following the 7:00 PM Mass . All are welcome to attend.

Sacramental Life Sacrament Of Baptism: In order to understand and better appreciate this special sacrament, parents are required to attend the Pre-Baptismal Program. Please call Gail Fromm so schedule your appointment Sacrament of Eucharist: This is the foundation of the greatness of our faith. For questions concerning first Eucharist, please contact Nettie Goldate. Sacrament of Confirmation: Typically students throughout the Diocese of Scranton are confirmed in 8th grade. For questions, please contact Nettie Goldate. Sacrament Of Marriage: Congratulations! At least six months before the date of your marriage you are asked to contact Dana Cerminaro so that the appropriate preparations can be made for this special celebration. Sacrament Of The Anointing Of The Sick: Urgent calls will be attended to at any time of the day or night. You may call the parish office to request an appointment to receive this special Sacrament before surgery. Visitation Of The Sick: Please call the Parish Center for visitation of the sick at home, in the hospital, or health care facility. Funerals: Please notify a parish priest at the time of a loved one’s death. After, Dana Cerminaro will assist in helping you plan the funeral. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the official five-stage process the Catholic Church uses to welcome adult members into the faith. Anyone interested in becoming a part of this process or in obtaining more information can call Gail Fromm or ask a priest or deacon.

Bereavement Support Group There will be a bereavement support session on Sunday, October 18th at 2:00PM in the parish center. These sessions are informal and informative. All are welcome to attend, whether there is a need to talk of your grief, ask questions or just sit and listen. For more information call Nettie. Friday Morning Company If you are interested in getting more meaning out of the Mass readings by discussion, why not join us for Friday Morning Company. Each week we go over the Sunday readings and discuss and perhaps gain a deeper understanding of the Word of God. We also include Morning Prayer and some social time in our sessions. Catholic Social Services Counseling Catholic Social Services of The Diocese of Scranton offers compassionate counseling in a safe, comfortable environment where your privacy is always respected. Lazarus Ministry The Lazarus Ministry is a group of volunteers to prepare a meal in the Gathering Room (lower level of the Church) after the funeral of their loved one. We can always use volunteers to help with the cooking, setting up of the tables, serving the meal, and cleaning up afterwards. All ages welcome. Please consider helping out in any way possible. This year, to allow us to update our records, everyone at Mass will be asked to complete the pledge form, whether or not they have made a pledge or intend to pledge. You are also invited to list your personal prayer intentions on the inside pledge form and to attend a special Mass of Thanksgiving to be held at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton, on Sunday, November 22, at 10:00 a.m. Your intention will be remembered at this Mass celebrated by Bishop Joseph C. Parent Meeting for students of second graders who will be receiving the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist this upcoming year will be on is on Wednesday October 28th at 7:00 PM in the Gathering Room, this meeting is mandatory for parents only, and at least one parent should attend.

Both Sessions begin at 7:00 PM in the Gathering Room (lower level of Church) These sessions are mandatory for both candidates and a least one parent. Sponsors are welcome if available. If a candidate cannot attend their scheduled session they should attend the other session.

Service Project Opportunities: Student volunteers are needed to assist religious education classes in grades K-5th and for Children’s Liturgy of the Word at Sunday Masses. Contact Steve Wallo for more information. Halloween Party at OLS hosted by the youth ministry. We are hosting a Halloween Party on October 25th from 1pm- 4pm, and we need your help. The High School Faith Formation Program Growing in faith is a lifelong process and we are just getting started! For Grades 9-12. The next session will be on Sunday October 25th in the Gathering Room from 6:00-8:00 PM. Students and adult mentors meet twice a month for dinner, small group sharing, inspiring videos, group activities, and events, service, and prayer. Please contact Nettie to register. Youth Group meetings are every Thursday night starting at 6:30PM in the Gathering Room of Our Lady of the Snows. All high school students are welcome to attend anytime. Summer schedule will vary.

We’ll be making cookie care packages for our homebound and shut-ins. Family to Family Thanksgiving November 25th is Friends of the poor’s annual thanksgiving dinner hand out. We’ll go to the Scranton Cultural Center around noon and help with meal distribution until 4:00PM.
