basketball courts as an official, the late Art Harmon will forthe third year live on as thenamesake of the Arthur W. Harmon Jr. MostValuable Player Award that will be givenout to the top players on the boys andgirls sides after the annual ShoreBasketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Games.

This season’s games will be at 6 p.m. (girls)and 8 p.m. (boys) at Central Regional HighSchool, and the biggest standouts from eachgame will be the recipients of the award inHarmon’s honor.

Harmon passed away at 63 years old on Oct. 25, 2009,after a long career in scholastic athletics. He was a 40-year member of the International Association ofApproved Basketball Officials Shore Board 194, and alsowas a member of the Shore Soccer Officials Associationfor over 20 years.

“The game of basketball meant a lot to him, so anytime anybody does anything to recognize him istremendous,’’ said Harmon’s son, Matt, who many Shorefans know as part of the award-winning radio broadcastteam at The Shore Sports Network.

“He hadn’t been reffing games in a long time becauseof injuries he had along the way, but he was still the

secretary-treasurer ofthe Shoreboard for along timebecausehe loved

it. A lot ofguys who might nothave been able to

physically ref gamesany more might have said, ‘Why

even bother?’ but that was never his attitude. Justbecause he wasn’t physically able to do games becauseof knee problems and ankle problems, he still continuedto be involved and give to the organization as much ashe could.’’

During his 36 years at Rumson-Fair Haven HighSchool, Harmon was a health and physical educationteacher who also served a stint as the school’s athleticdirector and was a coach in baseball, soccer, swimmingand gymnastics. Harmon was also a fixture as a lifeguardon the Jersey Shore for more than 40 years.

This is the second local award being given out inHarmon’s name this season, as there will be an awardgiven to an official every season at the WOBM

Christmas Classic by tournament director KevinWilliams.

“It’s been humbling in a way,’’ Matt Harmon said. “Wedidn’t ask any of these people to do these awards, sothem coming to us makes it even more special. Weweren’t prodding people to do it. They just want to do itbecause they know what kind of man he was and howimportant he was to people.’’

Whether it was wowing the crowd, bringing energy to the game, orpiling up points, the five-mancontingent from the ShoreConference made its presence felt ona state-wide level in Sunday's NewJersey Scholastic BasketballCoaches Senior All-Star Classic atRider University. In the South's 148-128 win over the North,Wagner-bound Raritan forward Mike Aaman led theway for the local players with 19 points, AsburyPark guard Armond Conover had 16, Dartmouth-bound Jackson Memorial forward BrandonMcDonnell had 13, Middletown North guard JasonHuelbig had six points and Conover's twin brother,Amir, chipped in with four points along with somegreat passes. Armond Conover also won the halftimedunk contest, throwing one down off the bounce inthe finals to edge Teaneck's Chris Jones, who is

committed to Pittsburgh.

Bucknell recruitDominic Hoffman ofGill St.Bernard's wonthe most

valuableplayerawardwith21pointsin the

South's victory, and Trenton Catholic's BrandonTaylor, a Penn State recruit, added 20 points. Joneshad a game-high 23 points in the loss for the North.Linden guard Shakir Phelps added 22 points, andHofstra recruit Dallas Anglin, a Seton Hall Prepguard, had 16 points.

The Conovers brought the most energy andenthusiasm to the day to draw some of the biggestcheers on a court packed with talent, showing thesmall-school players from Group I Asbury Park canbe as good as anyone from the parochial and largepublic school powers. They said they are currentlylooking at some junior colleges as far as theirplaying careers are concerned, and could go to playfootball.

"It definitely means a lot coming from a littleschool,'' Armond Conover said. "A lot of people saywe can't play with the kids from the bigger Group

schools and as competitorsyou just want toshoweverybodythat no matterwho you puton the

court with us, we're going to play to our full ability.A lot of people say they like how we play and thatwe bring excitement to the game, so that's what wetry to do every time we step on the court.''

"We like toentertain,'' AmirConover said. "Wejust come out hereand have fun, allsmiles. We just relishthe moment.''The game was also a chance for players to get toknow one another after competing on the court

during the season. Huelbig, whoparticipated inthe 3-pointshootingcontest athalftimethat was

won by Gill St. Bernard's point guard Alex Mitola, made some friends andnearly brought the house down with a monster dunk before being fouled.

"I had never met the Conovers, and now I'm friends with them,'' saidHuelbig, who will continue his career at Assumption College. "It's a funexperience. Just to get here is an honor.''

For the 6-9 Aaman, who is Huelbig's AAU teammate, the game was awelcome respite during a time when his future plans may be up in the air.Numerous outlets have reported that Wagner coach Dan Hurley hasinterviewed for the vacant head coaching job at the University of RhodeIsland. Aaman nearly went to play for Hurley at St. Benedict's Prep inNewark before choosing to attend Raritan, and has had his mind set onplaying for Hurley at Wagner, which may now be in doubt.

"I'm just letting it play out,'' Aaman said. "I'm not trying to call himbecause I know he has a lot of stress on himself, and I don't want to makemore stress by asking him what he's going to do. I think he should do what'sbest for him and his family.''

Aaman said that he will meet with Raritan coach Denis Caruano andformulate a plan if Hurley does leave. Should that happen, his future

destination may change.

"If he's not there, the odds of me staying at Wagner probably are slim,''Aaman said. "I'll see who they get as a coach and then take it from there.''

McDonnell reached his decision last week and will be a future teammate ofMitola's at Dartmouth. The 6-8 forward showed off his deep shooting rangewith three 3-pointers in the South's win. He also participated in the halftime3-point shooting contest.

"It was good to come out here and have a little fun after all the intensity ofthe season,'' McDonnell said. "I had a great time.’’

The Shore Conference was also represented in the girls all-star game, which followed the boys game. St. Rose’s Samantha Clark and KaseyChambers, Jackson Memorial’s Tiffany Montagne and Manalapan’s JasmineMcCall were all part of the South team that lost 110-105 to the North.

McCall, who is headed to Seton Hall, led the local contingent with 15points, Montagne added 12 and Clark, who is bound for Fordham University, chipped in with eight points. Chambers, a Monmouth University recruit, wasin attendance but did not play due to an injury.

Brittney Sykes of University High School in Newark was the game’s mostvaluable player with 18 points for the North. Hamilton West’s AlexisJohnson was the game’s high scorer with 22 points. Mountain Lakes’ KatieReese won the halftime 3-point contest, which Clark and McCall alsoparticipated in.

When the curtain came down forAsbury Park's boys basketball team in a68-53 loss to Plainfield in this season’sNJSIAA Tournament of Championsquarterfinals, two things were clear.

1The senior-laden Blue Bishops wentout on their terms.

2 It may have closed the book on agolden age of Asbury Park athletics

until the young talent in the pipeline canjumpstart the next one.

"Something special did end,'' said seniorguard Thomond Hammary. "They're goingto have a lot of work to do next year andthe years to come.''During the four years of high school forAsbury Park's seniors, the Blue Bishopshave won four Central Jersey Group I titlesand two straight overall Group Ichampionships. That's in addition to threeCentral Jersey Group I football titles in thelast four years featuring many of the sameplayers.

While some of the seniors haven't beenthere the whole time, including theConover twins, who transferred fromLakewood after their freshman year, theyall have played a role in a run of successthat would be hard for any school to match. They also were the first Shore Conferenceboys basketball team since Holmdel in1998-99 to win consecutive Group titles.

Making it more impressive is that AsburyPark consists of all of 345 total students, yet for the last four years has weatheredgraduation losses to keep piling up

championships. However, next year may be theirsternest test of that run given that Asbury Park willessentially have an entirely new and inexperiencedteam.

"It's all about tradition,'' seniorArmond Conover said. "If theunderclassmen paid attention to us, westayed focused and concentrated ontogetherness. If they play together as aunit and as a family, they'll be allright.''

The Blue Bishops seniors can leavewith their heads held high after giving theGroup III behemoth Cardinals a battle atPine Belt Arena that was not reflected by thefinal score. Asbury Park led Plainfield by 11points in the first quarter and only trailed 32-30 at the half. It was a one-point game aslate as 2:11 in the third quarter after a pair offree throws by Amir Conover beforePlainfield's size began to wear Asbury Parkdown.

The Group I team in the Tournament ofChampions has only won three games sincethe TOC's inception in 1989. It can oftenseem like the one sitting at the kids' tablewhile the rest of the teams sit with theadults, but Asbury Park showed it belonged among thebest.

"They know that we gave them all they could ask for,''Amir Conover said. "We came out here and gave it all thatwe can.''

It was a far cry from last year, when Plainfielddemolished Asbury Park 68-35 in the TOC quarterfinals. The Blue Bishops were knocked heavily by their fans andother observers for essentially quitting in the second half.

Obviously, Asbury Park came in withthe mindset to win and was notinterested in moral victories this timearound, but clearly a main focus wasmaking sure it would turn in an effortto be proud of.

"Dealing with the loss last year ofover 35 points, it was reallyheartbreaking to our fans and theyfelt like we didn't put it all on thecourt for our last game," AmirConover said. "We just wanted tocome out here and play 100 percentand give our coach and our fans whatthey wanted. We just came out hereand played our hearts out.''

"We had them on the ropes,'' saidAsbury Park coach Dave Johnson."We prepared well, and we didn't justcome out here to show up for thetournament. We came here to win.

They're just a better team.''

Plainfield re-affirmed that it is the best public schoolteam in the state, but if Asbury Park was going to get beatby a better team, it was at least going to make the

Cardinals earn it.

Asbury Park will graduate itsentire starting lineup -Hammary, the Conovers, pointguard Danron Morrissey andcenter Anthony McNeil - as wellas its top two reserves, guardsTahj Hammary and IslamJoshua. The Hammarys,Conovers, Morrissey and Joshuawere also integral parts of thefootball team that won theprogram's fourth Central JerseyGroup I title in five seasons thispast fall.

That's a ton of talent toreplace, which gave the loss tothe Cardinals the feeling of theend of an era.

"We're leaving high school aschampions,'' ThomondHammary said.

"I'll always remember this group here,'' Johnson said.

The victories weren't just on the court, either. TheConover twins were suspended from athletics for theirentire sophomore year because of a disciplinary issue thatcarried over from Lakewood. They also missed theirjunior football season because of academic ineligibilitybefore joining the basketball team mid-season last year. They could've easily been swallowed up by the streets inAsbury Park and never heard from again. Now they leavehaving played key roles in winning two Group Ibasketball titles and a sectional football championship.

"I'm just happy I got my life back on track and starteddoing what I had to do and made some changes,'' ArmondConover said. "I'm happy with my career. I got threerings.''

As for Johnson, while he knows that he is losing aboatload of talent to graduation, he also knows this isAsbury Park. The pipeline will produce more players.Still, the achievements of this senior class would be toughfor a group of newcomers at any school to live up to.That's why even though it was a loss to Plainfield, it wasa night for Blue Bishops fans to soak in what anincredible ride they have been on for the last four yearsbecause runs like that don't come along often for anyschool.

"It will be very tough to watch these guysleave, and it's going to be hard to fill theirshoes, but it's Asbury Park,'' Johnsonsaid. "There's always someone in thebackground watching their big brothers.''
