Letter from the RectorDear Reader:The consequence of the birth of Jesus Christ is that God brightens our lives. In this season of the Epiphany, the light of God shines in our liturgies, from the Baptism of Jesus to his Transfiguration on the mountain. We reflect that light at our parish meeting, at the Welcoming Dinner, at a fun Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, and in our care for one another. We enjoy that same wondrous light as we learn and grow. In this regard, I’m particularly pleased to teach the Gospel of Mark, and hope many of you will take advantage of that class. Finally, we witness to the luminous love of Christ in our own lives by sharing its light with those in need. This magazine represents your invitation to join us as we both bask in the Light of Christ and are challenged by its brilliance. There are many events and activities for you to enjoy, as well as many ways to serve. Thank you to all of you who make this happen. With gratitude, Rick+

Report from the Vestryby Wanda Green

With Epiphany being a time of new beginnings and a New Year giving us a time for reflection on the past and hope for the future, I find my

thoughts turning to the year we’ve had and the changes that are to come for All Saints’. What a year 2014 was: Rick’s sabbatical, multiple changes in the vestry, people leaving the church, new people and new initiatives coming to the church, staff changes, a discernment process, and the announcement of a retirement - just to name a few. It’s been very exciting and at times a little harrowing. As I sit at my computer on December 28th, after almost a full year of being Sr. Warden, I realize how my life has been enriched by all of you and by the experiences and community that All Saints’ offers. There is such a sweet spirit within this community now, one of moving forward, of positivity, of looking for new directions to reach out and build relationships between each other and to add new faces to already existing groups. As we enter 2015, my dream for All Saints’ is to see this growth in our community continue. To not only bring in

new people, but to encourage current members to become involved in new ways. With the upcoming retirement of Father Rick, this continued growth and well-being is going to need to be in the hands of a strong leadership team. The people who lead this community in the next couple of years will really need to have investment in its future. It’s an exciting time to be part of the vestry and other leadership at All Saints’. As many of you know, my husband, Joshua, is an active duty officer in the United States Air Force. He will be retiring in September and we will be moving on. It is because of this and other personal reasons that I must regretfully resign my position on the vestry a year early. I hope that some of you will invest in All Saints future by standing for nomination to the vestry and help to lead All Saints into what looks to be a very bright future. As Josh, Lilly, and I will continue to worship with you until our departure next fall, we look forward to continuing to grow in Christ, and enjoy the wonderful fellowship of our All Saints’ family.

WorshipConfessionby Bill Reed

Lent is about repentance. There are many ways to repent, to return our minds and hearts back to God. Life itself is turning, again and again to

God, at each turn deepening our communion with Him. One way to deepen our unity with God is Confession. We can confess our sins alone to God or at Eucharist – many ways to repent. But there is a powerful healing experience, not otherwise available but to those who confess their sins through the priest. In this intimate disclosure of our broken hearts to the minister of Christ, there is Christ Himself forgiving, sanctifying, and deepening our eternal bond with Him. Review the rite for the “Reconciliation of a Penitent” in the Book of Common Prayer. It is another important opportunity to know the Living Christ among us.

Appreciation from One Who Knowsby Hans Lehmann

This year’s Christmas pageant was as good as I can remember. First everyone spoke clearly and slowly, which I thought amazing. Secondly,

they articulated and used a microphone, which meant I could understand them, which has not always been the case. And lastly, they sang in unison. Even those two little kids who sang together could be heard clearly. I was amazed. It was a very professional production, and I wondered how many times they had rehearsed. Many Thanks, Love, Hans

Serving on the Vestry or as a Delegateby Susan Britton and Susan Stanton

Contact one of us if you would like to serve on the Vestry at this important season in the life of All Saints’. We are looking for members to lead the parish

during our transition. Vestry members serve as spiritual leaders. They participate in the worship and other activities of the parish. The Vestry usually meets once a month, and each Vestry member serves on a committee. We are also seeking candidates to serve as delegates to the diocesan convention. There are quarterly meetings, as well as the annual convention. Your responsibility would be to represent All Saints’ at these meetings, and to report back to the congregation.

Time, Talent, & Interest Formby the Vestry

If you have not yet completed this form, we ask you to do so in the next few weeks. Copies are available online, at the back of the church, and in the office. Let us know if

you would like a copy mailed to you.

CommunityAdvent Dinner – A Good Time Was Had by Allby Sherry Shollenbarger

Seccombe Hall was aglow with candlelight, beautifully decorated and alive with laughter and good cheer as we congregated for our first Advent Dinner. After

enjoying champagne punch and light starters, along with much animated conversation, we all strolled up to partake of the wonderful dinner prepared by Gywnn and her gracious assistants as Claudia and Grace serenaded us with harp and recorder. A treat, indeed!Bob Nielsen was in great form as he delighted us with his poems, the choir kept us chuckling as we sang along, our youth assisted us as we enjoyed our meal and, as we ended our evening, Fr. Rick took us back to our childhood as he read The Night Before Christmas.

Caroling

We walked along Dolores and Ocean, stopping at homes and the American Legion. We stopped at restaurants and shops (sang “Il est ne le divin

Enfant” in French!) at Le St Tropez. Many people stopped to sing with us and many more took photos. We stopped at the Victorian and homes on the way back on Lincoln. One lady came to the door with her cat and turned on the lights of her tree for us as we left. Two neighbors were new to Carmel...first Christmas here and nearly had tears in their eyes for joy at our welcome. All of us were touched by the response we got and spoke of wanting to do it again next year.

Welcoming Dinnerby Sameera Sharif

The next Welcoming Dinner is scheduled for Sunday, February 8, immediately after the 5:30 Eucharist. The Vestry invites you to meet the newer members,

and to enjoy the delicious Indian dinner that I will prepare. Please sign up via email, or at the back of the church, so that we can provide enough food.

Discipleship

Youth Newsby Jennifer Suttie

This month, the Youth Group will find great things to do while we explore what it means to be a Christian and how to best live in the light of God.

I am preparing a youth night at the church, a trip to Grace Cathedral and fun on the beach - weather permitting. I was inspired by the Christmas pageant, and some of the kids suggested we put an acting group together. Many of the kids would like to present another play, so watch this space for news. In January, we will be voting on how we want to pay it forward with some volunteering. We will also be exploring the Bible with our Echo the Story program.

Most of all, I want to thank Rachael and Grace Sizemore, Alex and Sophia Davies and Andi Jo Suttie for all their help on Christmas. They made Advent wreaths for the Christmas dinner, served at the dinner, directed, narrated and acted in the play. Sophie performed acolyte duties and the Sizemore’s attended two Christmas Eve services - they made Christmas very special.

Wednesday Bible Studyby Fr. Rick

Iwill again be leading the Wednesday Bible Study. We will learn more about the Gospel that is featured this liturgical year. Please join me in thanking Sofia Osborn

for teaching this class so well. I hope that she will serve as my substitute, and that she might continue the course she has been offering again in the future. Join us in Grant Hall at 10:30 a.m. each Wednesday.

Happy New Year from Santa Lucia Campground & Chapelby Duane and Pat Gomes

The recent rains have greatly helped in reviving the campgrounds and river. Many of the old broken branches and debris have moved out to sea. Paul’s

Meadow truly looks like a meadow with the new shoots of green grass growing all over.On the downside the recently cold nights have hindered the growth of some of our new plants. Of course, hungry deer have had a hand in stunting growth too. We are continuing to clean up the grounds and uncovering nature’s wonders. We look forward to seeing many of the old campers this spring. We also hope to see many new campers too.

Too Many Thank-You’s to Count!by Fr. Rick

From the Advent Lessons and Carols, the Advent dinner, the greening party, the caroling, and the generous Christmas donations, to the many joyful

Christmas liturgies, the light of All Saints’ shone brightly with love. Thank you to all who led and supported these events. There are too many of you to count! Recognition for extraordinary service goes to Kathy Kirkwood, Sherry Shollenbarger, Gwyn Romano, Susan Britton, and Alex Davies. What a wonderful congregation!

Treasurer’s Report Year End 2014by Dave McClendon

While the dust is still settling on the final polished version of the year end numbers, let me first take this opportunity to express my profound

thanks to all of you who stepped up to the plate to go to bat for the Church in December and throughout the year. Unlike the Mighty Casey, who struck out and brought no joy to Mudville, you all, by contrast, hit a game winning home run. Congratulations on a job well done. I hoped to be able to include in this report a preliminary summary of the actual numbers for you to see, but I won’t have them from Lin until the very day of the deadline for this publication, so if they are absent, check in with me as you choose and I will provide them ASAP. I am deeply humbled by the outpouring of generosity that took form well beyond the financial support that you provided. There are many unsung heroes and heroines out there who did much hard work behind the scenes, making unseen sacrifices and contributions to the cause. We are all so very blessed to have these quiet members who perform so selflessly. Without them, we would not have won the game. Great job, everyone! To those of you who have not yet pledged for 2015, please do so ASAP as this will help greatly in assembling the budget for the new year which will likely be as challenging as the year just finished. As a devout believer in the value of competition, I would also like to put out this call to any of you who might seek

to stand for election to become the new Church Treasurer. This election will be held at the end of January for a one-year term. As I have not yet made my own decision to put my name back in the hat or not, it is in the best interests of the Church, I believe, to seek candidates at this time. If you should be so inspired to serve in this way, please check in with Fr. Rick or myself.Lastly, I want to thank everyone for the support and encouragement you have provided to me in my service as your Treasurer. It has been my great privilege and honor to use the skills I have acquired in my life to assist in this way.

Walking the Wayby the Stewardship Commission

The theme of the annual appeal is Walking the Way. The reason for the theme of Walking the Way is because God gives bountifully and graciously. As

Christians we not only receive from God, but we also follow Jesus in giving of ourselves. We discover the Way to be life-giving and joyful. The Vestry will be contacting those who have not yet made a pledge to join those of us who have. We translate this spiritual response into the practical reality of funding our ministries and paying our rector and staff. Walk the Way of joyful generosity with us by making a pledge for 2015.

Outreach

Christmas giving from All Saints’ members to Epiphany Church, Marinaby Rosemary Smith

Vicar Jon, Epiphany Church in Marina, tells of the Christmas Eve giving at the Church where 123 children received gifts collected from members of

All Saints’. Families received food boxes and turkeys, for which they were very grateful. Fr. Jon notes that while there were more families, the number of children was down, as some have out grown the program and families have fewer children. Many thanks to the members of All Saints’ who contributed toys, warm clothing, etc. and for the checks from “some great angels!”

Dear All Saints’ Church:

My name is Yvelande Pierre Lazard, and I am the spouse of Amirold Lazard (Rector of Patrick’s, Haiti). I would like to thank you all for your

faith and prayers while I was sick. I’d also like to show my appreciation for your support in helping not only the schools but also the communities. Your contributions have aided many young children in pursuing further education. Coming in to this New Year, I would like to wish all of you lasting peace, health, and happiness. I will continue keeping you all in my prayers. God Bless you.Best Regards, Yvelande Pierre Lazard

News from St. Patrick’s School in Haitiby Rosemary Smith

Since the California friends of St. Patrick’s undertook to help the small struggling school in the remote mountains of Haiti, both young and adult lives have

been changed for the better. New windows of knowledge and experience have opened as well as the health benefits of clean water. Imagine what a school trip to the museum in Port-au-Prince means if you have never left your village and the magic of being able to read printed words opens a whole new world. The addition to the staff of a “medical helper” is a blessing to a sick or injured child and his/her parents.California friends (St. Edwards, San Jose, St. Jude’s,

Cupertino, All Saints’ Day School and All Saints’ Parish) will meet for a telephone conference January 7 and we will update you on the latest news. We will meet again in a few months here at All Saints’ and welcome any of you to join us. Call Rosemary, 625-7622 or email [email protected] if you are interested, or just want to discuss the project.p.s. Late and good news from St. Patrick’s, Haiti. We were coming up quite a bit short for the teachers’ salaries for January and February and thought we might have to offer a pay cut. (Teachers’ pay is $90.00 a month). Thanks to All Saints’ Outreach and faithful support from some individuals (You know who you are and thank you.) it looks like the teachers will get full pay for those months. Blessings to all!

The Outreach Commission is looking for a new I-HELP Program Coordinatorby Nancy Jones

I-HELP stands for Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program. Every night the I-HELP men are driven to a different faith community

for a healthy dinner and a safe place to sleep. All Saints provides the dinners and lodging for the men on second Mondays, monthly. We feed approximately 25 men, sitting with them, sharing the meal and conversation. They arrive via their bus sometime between 5:30 and 6:15. We never know exactly how many will be in the program but have had as many as 27 and as few as 15. All the food is always eaten! The Outreach Commission is looking for a new I-HELP Program Coordinator. This task is to identify a group who will organize the dinner each month and to assist them in this effort. The coordinator need not join the Outreach Commission, which meets on the first Mondays of each month at 10am, but this would be useful. For 2015, we already have most months covered, but will need the coordination of a leader. If you are interested, please call Hans Lehmann (624-0540) or Rosemary Smith (625-7622).
