Brief History• On 10/31, spirits of all deceased children

(angelitos) are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours.

• On 11/2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities”

Altars • Altars (ofrendas) are made in each home to offer & honor deceased relatives.

• Flowers, food, toys, candy, soda, water, hot cocoa, even cigarettes & shots of ‘mezcal’

• Sugar skulls & little skeletons• Many spend over 2 month's

income to honor their dead relatives.

Sugar Skulls

• Lots of sugar available in Mexico• Sugar skulls represent a departed soul– name written on the forehead – placed on the home ofrenda or gravestone to

honor the return of a spirit.

Folk Art• Traditional art styles,

subjects, and materials of a culture handed down for generations.

Motif• A central design in a pattern that

can be consistent or contain varieties

Your Project:

• Create a “sugar” skull that holds personal meaning to you

• Does not have to be entirely realistic but should be recognized as a skull (does not have to be a human skull!)

• Use other 3-D forms (hair, hat, decoration etc) to incorporate in the skull

• Use of a “motif” & pattern.
