Irene Inglis:
We were very sad to hear of Irene’s death on the first day of term. Irene was a volunteer
reader in school and had also worked part time for the school as a MDSA (Mid-Day Supervisor)
for over a year, she was a kind, caring, positive and gentle lady. We give thanks for all the care
and support that she gave our children. Her daughter Lesley wrote a short tribute to Irene and
sent us this lovely photograph taken a few years ago in Australia. Our sympathies are with
Irene’s family and friends.
Prior to working at All Saints’ School, Irene worked as a part-time
receptionist at Audrey's Beauty Salon in Newmarket. This followed
retirement from Tindalls the Stationers where she worked for over 29
years.
Irene liked being active and, as well as swimming and walking, she
regularly attended yoga and pilates classes. Over the years she
travelled to more than 30 countries with her husband Thomas where
they enjoyed experiencing different cultures and history.
Irene was also a great baker of cakes and the staff at the school
enjoyed sampling the fruits of her labour!
Interesting Initiatives
It has been a really good start to term and already, children are getting involved in their
learning, enrichment activities such as after school clubs and volunteering. One of our school
priorities this year is to see all of our older children getting involved in leadership by
volunteering to take part in committees which will improve our experience of school and our
environment. We hope that children will see the benefits and rewards of facilitating and
motivating change.
We also want to see children enjoying a wide variety of interests and being recognised for
community action. The launch of the Children’s University scheme next week may well just
motivate even more of our children to be involved in additional activities and develop a wide
range of interests.
All Saints’ Receives the School Games Gold Award
Over the summer holidays we were really pleased to hear that All Saints’ had been awarded the Gold School Games Award. This is a huge tribute to so many:
The children who have taken part in so many different competitions and clubs.
The coaches that deliver high quality specialist coaching at school (golf last year and netball for Year 2 this year).
The play leaders who support younger children’s learning and Premier Sport who train them.
The teachers who give high quality PE lessons so that the children learn basic skills.
Mrs Chambers, our enthusiastic and dedicated PE and Sport Lead and her team of staff, particularly Mr East but others too, who organise competitions and spend lots of after school time supporting children at events.
And finally,
To parents who cheer the children on in all kinds of weathers - THANK YOU!
Children’s University:
Look out for more details of an exciting opportunity to ensure that your children’s after school
learning, clubs, hobbies and visits allow them to graduate from The Children’s University. Mrs
Bonner will be leading an assembly on 23rd September accompanied by Gabrielle Bell from
Palace House and Debbie Bennet of the Children’s University, to explain how to earn points for
the Children’s University passport. A snippet from the Children’s University website is below:
What we do and why
Children’s University is a charity that works in partnership with schools to develop a love of learning in children.
We do this by encouraging and celebrating participation in extra-curricular activities in and outside of school. The
impact of these activities is proven to be positive, which is why we’re committed to creating a level playing field of
opportunity and opening up access to children of all backgrounds.
The need for Children’s University
By the time a child turns 18, they will have spent just 9% of their waking life in a classroom. Children’s University
is about making the most of the remaining 91%.
Research shows that participation in extra-curricular activities can positively impact on attainment, increase a
pupil’s positive identification with school, and build self-confidence and resilience.
Research also shows that children that do not have access to these opportunities fall behind, lack confidence, and
fail to develop career aspirations. The resulting attainment gap is so significant that 25% of children from the most
disadvantaged backgrounds achieve below expected attainment levels.
Key outcomes we want for every child
For every child that takes part in Children’s University, we want the
following outcomes:
They feel they have grown in confidence and self-belief
They have enjoyed new experiences, in new places and want to keep
exploring
They believe they have a broader range of essential skills
They feel empowered to make positive choices about their future
They see learning that is fun, aspirational and lifelong
They feel their eyes have been opened to a multiplicity of learning
activities and opportunities
They feel celebrated for their commitment to learning by their family, school and community.
Have a very Happy Retirement!
Pam Byrne retired last Friday after 24 years of working in the kitchens at All Saints’- we are very grateful
for her hard work and contribution to the school. We calculated that if Pam had cooked one hundred
dinners a day for the last 24 years, this would total to a whopping 456,000 meals in the time that she
worked for All Saints’. Have a very happy retirement Pam!
Summer Building work
School was a busy place over the summer holidays as a number of replacement fire doors, panels and
screens were fitted. Work began on the first day of the holidays and finished on the last day of August.
We are particularly pleased with the way that the new doors “lift” the feel of the school and give us
more light and access too. Also, part of the works to improve fire safety included building a large
panel/firebreak between Reception and Year 1 this has had the knock on effect of reducing the noise
between the two areas, so we are really pleased.
In a separate project the Anglian Water contractor returned to All Saints’ to do some further planting,
they also fitted a bench in our front garden, which is already proving very popular!
In Brief:
La Jolie Ronde French classes at All Saints’: These are held after school on Mondays and Thursdays, catering for all levels from beginners up to Year 6, and will resume week commencing 23rd September. Classes are offered at the rate of £6.00 per lesson, paid termly in advance, and your child can have a free taster session to fully experience a class in action. Contact Kristine Bantick, 01440 783513 or [email protected] for more details. (Also please see separate letter)
Reading Volunteers: If you are interested in hearing children read please get in touch with Mrs Jordan via the school’s admin email address. We currently have a wonderful group of community, parent and governor readers who support our children in this way and they are invaluable!
Merit Assemblies: These are held most Fridays and parents are warmly invited to attend. This is generally the time when children will receive certificates or awards. The teachers also choose two children from their classes to show a piece of work or demonstrate a skill which has impressed them- children then receive a merit award and not only a certificate, but a
chance to have cake and a chat with me during a little tea party in the following week. These assemblies start at 2:15pm on Fridays. Dates for merit assemblies are as follows: Key Stage 1 and EYFS: (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2): 20/9/19 and 4/10/19 Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6): 27/9/19 and 11/10/19
150th Birthday: One of the events planned is a Victorian School Day on October 8th and we would love as many children as possible to come dressed as a school child would have been dressed 150 years ago. Please don’t feel the need to buy anything new- a shirt and trousers/cap/blouse/long skirt (or a belt around mum’s skirt!) will do. We look forward to seeing everyone dressed up.
Year 2 Assembly – Harvest Festival: This year’s Year 2 assembly is on Tuesday 1st October at 9.00am and it will incorporate our annual Harvest Festival. You are all very welcome and we are asking for non-perishable donations please, which we will pass to Newmarket Food Bank, please drop these into school either on the day or on Monday 30th September. Mrs Jordan would like to use a pumpkin in the assembly, could anyone provide one? Please let the office know. Cathedral Education Service: This is an annual service for school children and their families, this year it will be held at St. Edmundsbury Cathedral on Sunday 6th October at 5.30p.m. You are all very welcome to attend. School Admissions are now open!:
The online service for School Admissions https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/children-families-and-
learning/schools/school-places/ is now open, so if you have a child in current Year 6 you need to
apply for a secondary school place for September 2020 by Thursday 31st October 2019. If your child was born between 1.9.15 and 31.8.16 it is now time to apply for a Reception Class place for September 2020, this must be done by Wednesday 15th January 2020. Failure to apply by these dates could jeopardise your allocation of a place at your chosen school. If you, or someone you know, has a child born between 1.9.15 and 31.8.16 and would like a tour of All Saints’ school we have arranged several sessions:
Fri. 20th Sept at 9.00am, Weds. 25th Sept. at 10.00am, Mon. 30th Sept. at 10.00am, Mon.14th Oct. at 1.00pm, Fri. 1st Nov at 9.00am, Thurs. 7th Nov at 2.00pm, Tues. 26th Nov at 1.00pm and Mon 2nd Dec at 1.00pm.
Should you wish to attend any of these visits, please book your place at the school office.
Safeguarding: Please note that we need a minimum of two emergency contacts for each child
and ideally three. This is a safeguarding requirement; please note that you will be contacted by
the school should only one contact be given.
