At All Saints, we want our students to believe they can achieve anything they want to. So we are focusing on the growth mindset of: I WILL! Your children have received bracelets and pencils with our growth mindset and we refer to it daily. You can help your child achieve their goals by doing the following on this sheet.

HELP THEM BELIEVE TO ACHIEVE!

TALK ABOUT IT Talk with your child about his or her day, but guide the discus-sion by asking questions like: What was your learning goal today? What was the success criteria? How did you grow as a learner today?

PRAISE THE PROCESS Instead of saying, “You’re so smart!” praise effort, goal setting, persisting through challenges, or being creative. You can say: “WOW! You must have worked really hard on this!”

ENCOURAGE FAILURE—(WHAT?!) Your child needs to know that failure can (and often does) happen and it is okay. Remind them that each time they fail and try again, their BRAINS grow stronger! Don’t step in and prevent your child’s failure. This is how they learn to persevere and become strong. Be there to support!

THE BRAIN CAN GROW! Remind your child that their intelligence is not fixed. Remind them that when things are difficult, their brains grow if they work hard and persevere. Each time they learn something new they are making a new connection. Your child needs to know this is possible.

HELP THEM CHANGE THE WAY THEY SPEAK

The way your child talks to himself or herself makes a huge impact on mindset. If they say, “This is too hard,” help them to change that to “I cannot do this yet but I WILL keep trying.” Give them the “right” words to say when they are feeling down by modelling positive language yourself.

All Saints Catholic School All Saints Catholic School is a Christian community in which students, staff, parents and parish clergy are committed to the nurturing of a caring environment. Within this environment, all members are given the opportunity to flourish and grow. We will strive to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment where all students can succeed. The cornerstone upon which all our standards of discipline are founded can be summarized in a single word: RESPECT. Every person involved in the All Saints School community is challenged to treat every other person with dignity, courtesy and respect at all times. The respectful student possesses: self-respect, respect for peers, respect for staff and other adults who work in our school community. The respectful student is ever mindful of the rights of all others in the community. Respect for staff members: It is understood that all staff members are responsible for all pupils at all times. Every member of staff has complete authority in the school and at school events. Consequently, students are to regard all staff members, including supply teachers, as they would their regular classroom teacher. Respect for property: School property such as text books, library materials, physical education equipment, team uniforms, computers, software, furniture, etc. are for everyone’s use. Pupils who are responsible for vandalism, damaged, or lost articles are expected to pay replacement costs. All Saints Catholic School is not just the building and the facility. It is a Christian family made up of staff and students who work together. What we wish to have is a genuine Christian family spirit with everyone-staff and students-doing his/her share to make All Saints a caring, living, loving community. To succeed in working towards this goal, each of us must consider how he/she can contribute towards making All Saints a community built on care, love and respect. All Saints School fosters and supports our Mission: The Toronto Catholic District School Board is an inclusive learning community rooted in the love of Christ. We educate students to grow in grace and knowledge and to lead lives of faith, hope and charity and Our Vision: “At Toronto Catholic, we transform the world through witness, faith, innovation and action.” School/classroom rules have been formulated for students in a simple, easy to remember format that focuses on positive behaviour. Our students are all made aware of the school’s “I CARE” philosophy: I care therefore:

❑ I am a responsible student; ❑ I use appropriate language and manners; ❑ I respect everyone; ❑ I respect property and the school/classroom rules/routines; ❑ I keep my hands to myself (no body contact).

In a school community formed by Catholic beliefs and traditions, our mission is to educate students to their full potential. R Responsibility E Effort

Safe Schools Practices and Procedures:

The Safe School legislation requires:

A province-wide Code of Conduct that sets clear minimum standards for behaviour

Mandatory minimum consequences for certain behaviours Parents will have the assurance that schools are committed to providing a safe environment for their children; an envi-ronment which encourages and supports their learning, and where strategies are in place to minimize disruption. Principals and Teachers have the clearly stated authority to manage the learning environment so that students can achieve to the best of their ability. They have the right to work in an environment in which they are shown respect. Students must demonstrate respect for themselves, their peers and all adults who work in the school. Consequences: We are extremely proud of the vast majority of the pupils at All Saints who work hard to develop this community founded on respect and love. However, on those occasions when a student chooses not to respect the rights of others, one or more of the following consequences will be utilized by staff. The sequence of consequences are again left to the discretion of the school administration. When inappropriate behaviour occurs, it is our intent to deal with it promptly and directly, in a spirit of impartiality and fairness. A wide range of supports and consequences have been developed to allow for the latitude necessary to deal with the unique circumstances of each situation and the individual needs of each student. The nature of the misconduct, its seriousness and frequency will determine the con-sequences that are applied. Parents will continue to be informed and involved in the intervention process, whenever possible and appropriate.

Please refer to our TCDSB website at www.tcdsb.org a. Bill 212 Progressive Discipline Model for the guiding principles b. Extract from the Education Act, 2009 regarding Suspension Policy c. Bill 157 Legislation effective February 1, 2010.

Police Protocol: The Board has revised its Local School/School Board Protocol which details a common approach for responding to school related occurrences as required by the new Safe Schools Act. The protocol between the Toronto coterminous Boards and the Toronto Police Services outlines procedures on how the police and school board personnel will interact to ensure that the students’ rights are protected and the victims are safe and treated justly. Catholic Expectations of Students: The Toronto Catholic District School Board should declare that it is a fundamen-tal expectation that students in our Catholic Schools will follow the ethic of our Catholic faith, where empathy, care for others, and respect for life dominate, by adhering to the following principle: “If you are aware that a student or group of students is in a dangerous situation, then you should tell a caring adult in the school community immediately.” Ontario Student Record (O.S.R.): Each student who attends school in the province of Ontario has an Ontario Stu-dent Record. This is a continuing record, which shall be used for the improvement of instruction for your child by school personnel. If, at any time, you wish to review the contents of this record, please contact the principal and make an appointment to do so. Child Abuse: All professionals have a legislated duty to report suspected cases of child abuse. When there are rea-sonable grounds to suspect that a child may be suffering from physical harm, sexual or emotional abuse, all profession-als have a legislated duty to report to the Catholic Children’s Aid Society.

General Information Academics: The primary goal of all staff at All Saints School is to develop inquisitive, independent, self-disciplined and motivated learners. When students do not fulfill their academic responsibilities teachers will proceed in the follow-ing manner:

Students will be required to make up missed work. Depending on the age of the child this might include a detention to make up missed work.

The parent/guardian will be informed (in the students’ planner, through a note, or telephone call) If the problem persists, teachers will arrange a case conference with the student, parent(s), resource personnel and the principal and/or vice-principal.

Attendance/Punctuality: The Education Act states that students must attend school regularly and punctually. Parents are to notify the school (416) 393-5290 of a child’s absence. You may call anytime and leave a message on the answering machine. This system requires full parental co-operation to be effective. The student shall bring a written note to the school (to be given to the classroom teacher) on the day of his/her return. When a child returns to school, it is the student’s respon-sibility to find out what work was missed and complete it within a reasonable length of time. Extended absences, for reasons other than health, require notification to the principal.

Students who arrive late for school must check in at the main office to ensure safe arrival and to help in keeping accu-rate attendance profiles. Attendance referrals will be sent to the Social Worker and persistent tardiness may result in school detentions.

Students are expected to arrive prior to the bell. All students are to arrive prepared to work and learn. Preparation includes the completion of daily assignments that are done to the best of the individual student’s ability. Preparation also implies that the student devotes appropriate time to study in advance of test situations. In keeping with the change in policy regarding homework or course work for family vacations taken during the academic year, please note that homework will not be provided unless the child is absent due to family emergency. Documentation must be provided.

Safe Arrival Program using SchoolMessenger: With SafeArrival, you are asked to report your child’s absence in advance using any of the following methods: Mobile device - SchoolMessenger from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at: https://go.schoolmessenger.com or call the toll-free number 1 (833) 251-3286 using the automated phone system.

Phone Calls: Unless there is an emergency, the students will not be allowed to call their parents during the day. If a parent needs

to talk to their children in the case of an emergency, the secretary will call them down to the office so that the parent

can communicate directly with their child.

FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD: ALL TELEPHONE NUMBERS MUST BE UP TO DATE!!!!

Permission Forms: A permission form with a parent/guardian signature shall be required for all trips. Verbal con-firmation over the telephone will not be accepted in its place. If students do not have a signed permission form he/she will NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE EXCURSION. Appointments/Early Dismissal: It is strongly recommended that appointments not be made during school hours. If this is not possible the student will require a note signed by the parent/guardian and bring it to school and give it to the teacher/secretary. (No pick-up between 2:40 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. - to facilitate dismissal procedures)

School Hours: 8:30 a.m. Assembly 10:12 a.m. - 10:27 a.m. A.M. Recess 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Lunch 1:40 p.m. - 1:55 p.m. P.M. Recess 3:00 p.m. Bus Dismissal

Students will enter and exit the building by way of their designated en-trance. Pupils are not to be in the building before 8:15 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m. unless they are participating in an ac-tivity under the direction and supervision of a teacher. Athletics and Extra Curricular Activities: Participation in extra-curricular activities is a privilege afforded to pupils to fulfill their responsibilities as students and members of the All Saints community. This privilege will be removed for poor academic performance and/or conduct which reflects a lack of courtesy and respect.

Bus: All pupils are to be at their bus stop punctually. Students are to travel only in their designated seat and on their designated bus. Pupils are to remain seated while the bus is in motion. Any activity that may distract the driver is not permitted as it endangers the safety of all. Pupils must be especially careful when leaving the bus. It is very im-portant that the driver is able to see students. Transportation privileges may be revoked for any student whose be-haviour poses a threat to the safety of others. Bus drivers will document and report to the office students failing to act safely on the bus. The bus is an extension of the school and thus the same rules apply. Students sign up for bussing and if they do so they must take the bus everyday (AM & PM), therefore, they cannot choose to walk home.

Lunch:

All Saints is a “nut-aware” environment, therefore, for the safety of those children, with serious nut allergies, stu-dents are not permitted to bring lunch and snacks that may contain nut products. We require your full cooperation in this matter. Also, note that baked goods and treats are not permitted for birthday celebrations in order to ensure the safety and welfare of these children.

Gum Chewing is strictly forbidden.

Students are to remain in their own seats during lunch.

During lunch and snack time, students are responsible for maintaining a clean environment. During lunch hour pupils are not permitted to leave the school grounds unless they have been signed out and are ac-companied by a parent/guardian. Going to La Rose Plaza for lunch or leaving the school grounds without per-mission is not permitted. During lunch or rainy day recess, students are to remain seated in their own seats, speak quietly, complete homework, read, be involved in rainy day games, or activities in their classrooms. Please Note: A) If behaviour becomes a consistent problem with any child, parents will be asked to make other arrangements for

lunch time. B) If a student leaves the school grounds without the permission and knowledge of school personnel, the conse-

quences may be an immediate suspension. At All Saints, safety is our primary concern and will remain a priori-ty.

In the schoolyard, the students are to remain in their designated areas. If there is a situation where sections of the yard need to be shared then this it will be done so on a rotational basis. Only tennis balls, Nerf balls, and basketballs are permitted on school property. Racquets, hockey stick, bats, etc...ARE NOT PERMITTED. Physical contact is NOT allowed when playing on the school playground. “Children must keep their hands and feet to themselves.” If a child becomes involved in a conflict with another student, words must be used to tell the other person to stop. If the conflict continues, the child must go to the teacher on duty for help. Playground/Hall Safety: All dangerous activities are not permitted. The definition of dangerous is at the discretion of school personnel fol-lowing Catholic Gospel values and T.C.D.S.B. safety policies. Inappropriate language (i.e. swearing) or comments are not acceptable and will not be tolerated. No acts of violence will be tolerated at any time on school property. It is important to note that our school will consequence any physical or hurtful confrontation. Verbal and physical as-saults will be documented and consequenced. Actions occurring outside of school hours but impacting upon school routines, activities or others will be dealt with in the same way. Support services, Police, or C.C.A.S. intervention will be initiated if needed. Lost and Found: All students’ belongings should be marked with the student’s name. If articles are found, students will bring them to the Lost and Found box, which is situated in a central place. All unclaimed articles will be donated to a charity at the end of each term.

Fire Drill: For safety reasons, during Fire Drills all pupils are to leave the school in single file as quickly and as quietly as possi-ble. Once outside, pupils are to line up in single file and in alphabetical order in the designated areas so that attend-ance may be taken. Students will not proceed back into the school until it is deemed safe to do so. Upon the sounding of the fire alarm, all staff members will ensure that all students evacuate the building. All visitors or parents in the school must also evacuate the building. Teachers of “differently abled” students will provide assistance to ensure they are safely outside (or in the designated area). Threats to School Safety: The Toronto Catholic District School Board has a primary responsibility to ensure the safety of students and staff in-side buildings and on Board property. Central administrative policies and procedures support school principals and vice-principals in the management of a crisis situation. These supports have been developed through community con-sultation and through collaboration with the Toronto Police Service. Please see the chart on the other page for emer-gency responses.

Visitors: All visitors must report to the main office upon their arrival. When picking up your children you must sign in and wear a visitor’s badge while in the school. All are welcome in the school but in order to preserve order and minimize disruption to the classes you are requested to come first to the office and speak with the secretary or Princi-pal/Vice-Principal. This is expected to ensure the safety of all students. This policy also applies to parents if they are coming to pick up their child during school time. Parents coming to pick up children at dismissal time are requested to do so at the dismissal doors. For the safety of our students, parents are asked not to enter playgrounds at recess or lunch. Parents who wish to meet with a teacher are encouraged to make an appointment so that class interruption is kept to a minimum. Parking: It is the responsibility of the school Principal or Designate to keep the FIRE ROUTES clear. It is highly rec-ommended that parents drop off and follow the Parent Safety Program (Kiss n’ Ride) procedures in order to alleviate the congestion in our driveway and the church parking lot during the morning and evening. Thank you for your continued cooperation in this matter.

Electronic Devices Students are to leave all valuables at home. This includes collectible cards, collections, radios, cell phones and other electronic equipment. These items are extremely difficult to locate once lost or stolen. Please note that the Board’s Insurance Policy does not cover property owned by staff or students!

Health Services: Public Health Nurses are no longer assigned to the school by the Public Health Unit. If you have any health concerns regarding you child, please call your family physician or call your local Health Unit. If your child has head lice, please keep your child at home. Purchase an appropriate shampoo for head lice, and follow the instructions for the medicated shampoo. Please inform the school of this problem so that a letter can be sent to the families in your child’s classroom.

Dispensing of Medication: By law, school staff is not allowed to dispense prescription or non-prescription medication without parental medical au-thorization. Forms are available from the office and must be completed by the parents and the child’s doctor if it is nec-essary for school staff to store and/or dispense medication. Children should not keep any medication on their person or in their bags unless the appropriate consent forms have been completed.

Educational Excursions: The expectations of the Ontario Curriculum may be complemented by educational trips. In order for your child to leave the school property, a school consent form must be completed and signed. Costs for the trips are kept to a minimum and no child will be denied an excursion for financial reasons if possible. Please contact the teacher or the office if fi-nances are not available for trips. See permission forms provided by staff.

Parental involvement: Parents are encouraged to participate in the school. The Catholic School Parent Council (CSPC) welcomes parents to attend their meetings. This advisory council encourages and welcomes parent discussion about the school and makes suggestions on policy and procedures; they support school programs and special events. All are welcome!

Homework: Homework is meant to be a reinforcement and extension of skills taught in school. It develops good study and organiza-tional habits and supports a pattern of lifelong learning. Through homework checks, parents have the opportunity to see what their children are learning and sign the agenda. Students are expected to complete homework independently. The following outline is a guideline for teachers and parents to follow: Types of Homework: Completion: to keep up to date with classroom work. Preparation: to prepare for the next day’s work or for up-coming lessons. Practice and Application: to develop, review, and reinforce skills; to transfer skills or concepts to new situations. Extension/Creative: to enrich classroom experiences and deepen understanding; to provide opportunities for problem-solving, critical thinking and integration of skills. Time Guideline: Grade 1 – 10 Minutes Grade 5 – 50 minutes Grade 2 – 20 minutes Grade 6 – 60 minutes Grade 3 – 30 minutes Grade 7 – 70 minutes Grade 4 – 40 minutes Grade 8 – 80 minutes Communication: Steps for productive communication have been provided to all schools. Please follow these steps for open communica-tion between home and school.

Step One Step Two - speak to the teacher - speak to the Administration - resolve issue(s) - if you have not spoken to the teacher, the Administration will ask you to do so as a courtesy to your child’s teacher

The Administration will involve the teacher in the discussions.

The Administration may request, at any time in the process, that you put your concerns in writing. The Administration may involve, at any time in the process, others who may be helpful in resolving the concern such as support staff from the school board, employee group representatives, the local parish or community agencies.

You are always invited to share questions, comments and concerns with your child’s teacher. Please contact the teach-er to set up a convenient meeting time. General inquires and messages can be made at any time at the main office.

Dress Code for Civvies Days

All students are expected to come to school appropriately dressed; that is, neat, clean and in a manner that re-flects the aims and atmosphere of a Catholic school. Appropriate dress includes covered shoulders, mid thigh length shorts, sayings and pictures on clothing that promote a positive attitude, and other clothing that helps to create an environment for academic learning. Clothing that does not reflect modesty is not allowed, (e.g. T shirts with sexual connotations, inappropriate slogans, halter tops, short tops that expose the midriff, spaghetti straps, tube tops, short shorts (no ripped jeans), hats in the building, muscle shirts for boys and bandanas). Shorts and pants need to be hemmed (tears are not permitted). Bandanas and other gang paraphernalia are strictly prohibited. The school does not allow the wearing of make up for the students. Students are asked to take pride in their personal appearance. It is the parent’s duty and responsibility to ensure that each child is suita-bly attired. Parents may be contacted and in some cases may be required to pick up their child if their manner of dress is not appropriate.

The TCDSB Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) governs the proper use of technology and electronic communication in our schools. The

purpose of the AUP is to provide students and their parents with a set of guidelines that outline the safe and appropriate use of tech-

nology within our Catholic School system. Included in the AUP is a definition of electronic communication to include social me-

dia, website publishing, and the use of personal electronic devices (PED’s). In addition it addresses expectations surrounding the

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy effective as of September 2012. While these devices are not mandatory for classroom

activities, they may be included when there is a clear educational purpose that has been identified by the teacher.

Definition: Electronic communication includes but is not limited to Internet use, e-mail, and social media, browsing, publishing or posting on web sites, downloading, accessing or storing files and use of personal electronic devices. The use of an electronic communication system within the Board has an educational and professional purpose. The term

educational and professional purpose includes classroom activities and limited high quality, self-discovery activities.

All parents and students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the AUP. For parents, the full text of the TCDSB AUP can be found at: http://www.tcdsb.org/board/policies/aup.

A summary of the AUP expectations for students in the TCDSB:

Behavior Expectations:

It is a privilege, not a right, to use the Board’s network and devices. Privileges may be restricted or taken away if the AUP is violated.

Students must use their own student account and keep it private when using the board network or devices. Students must use the network and electronic communication for educational purposes only. All students and their parents must sign the "Student Access Agreement" before they will be allowed to use the

Board’s network and devices. Personal Safety & Privacy:

A student should tell the school Principal or teacher immediately if they feel uncomfortable or not safe because of a message they received from an electronic communication such as an email, text message or photo.

Parents should discuss with their children the importance of protecting their personal information and privacy when using any electronic communication such as the internet. All parents and students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with resources that support Digital Citizenship. For parents and students, resources can be found at: https://www.tcdsb.org/ProgramsServices/SchoolProgramsK12/AcademicICT/DigitalCitizenship

Password Management:

TCDSB student logins grant access to WiFi, school computers and devices, and educational third-party services e.g., Google Apps for Education (GAFE).

Password management is very important and students must personally create their own password and it must be a strong password.

Students must keep their password secret, and never disclose or share a password. When creating a password we recommend that you make it easy to remember, but hard for others to guess. Avoid

using personal information such as your name, email address, or mailing address.

Password creation checklist: 8-16 characters At least 1 number At least 1 upper-case letter At least 1 lower-case letter No space No accented characters
