Pastor’s Chronicle In today’s gospel we have the story of a rich man who comes to Jesus asking what he must do to have eternal life [Mk.10: 17-27]. Jesus cites the Ten Com-mandments to him. The man replies that he has done that but is still spiritually empty. Jesus then goes to the heart of the matter “There is one more thing you must do,” and he focuses on one aspect of this partic-ular man’s life. Jesus tells him he must sell every-thing, give it to the poor, in order to have riches in Heaven.” Upon hearing this the man’s face fell for he was too weak; he desired wealth, and that was hold-ing him back from eternal life. Jesus is saying two concrete things to the rich man. First, it is not simply following a set of com-mandments that will give you eternal life, but follow-ing Jesus and his teachings is also necessary. Second, in this case, the rich man must sell his possessions because the sin of Greed is standing in the way of his relationship with God. What is standing in the way of deepening your relationship with God? One spiritual exercise is to reflect on the Seven Deadly Sins (Proverbs 6: 16) of Pride, Wrath, Envy, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, and Sloth to determine if one or more of them are keep-ing you from deepening your relationship with God. They are considered “deadly” because they are the doorway to other serious sins. The point of today’s lesson is not the con-demnation of possessions, although, the gospel clear-ly warns against the traps set by too many attach-ments. But neither is the point the glorification of poverty. The gospel stands opposed to these and all sins that dehumanize us. The bottom line is not what we have today by way of possessions, but on what we set our hearts. To the degree that wealth and pos-sessions keep us from following Jesus, we must free ourselves of them.

Parish Movie Night on Oct. 17 at 6:45 to 9 PM in the Parish Hall. The film will be Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton. Come to know, enjoy and inspire yourself and family through the life of this convert to Catholicism who did much to shape the Catholic Church in the early 19th centu-ry. Her influence still leads us 200 years later. We encourage you to bring some refreshments or snacks to share and make this a fun movie night with the par-ish. Liz Lester will be our patron with a tray of hot dogs. Sponsored by the Adult Ed. Ministry.

Reaching our Children with Faith Formation - Help!

We have had a strong response to enrollment this fall. This is great news but presents challenges. We are short four to eight volunteers in our weekday 3 to 5 PM programs. Monday and Wednesday are most critical followed by Tuesday and Friday. Also, we need two or three to help with our Middle and High School weekday programs on Tues. thru Thursday from 3:45 TO 5 pm. Without your help these stu-dents will not be adequately served. Give us a call if you can aide a teacher or teach a group of 10 to 15 students. Dan: 713-864-2653 ext. 205 or [email protected]. God Bless You.

Llamen a Dan: 713/864-2653, Ext. 205 o: [email protected]. ¡Que Dios los bendiga!

Adoration You are invited to commit to a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration be-

fore the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesdays from 8:30am to 7:00pm. So many graces flow to those who spend time before Christ in Eucharistic Adoration. In silence, we can hear more readily that still, quiet voice of God. Adoration is a beautiful gift and I hope many of you will take ad-vantage of it. Prayerfully consider committing to one hour per week. We strive to have two committed Adorers for each hour. Many hours now have only one person and currently no one is scheduled to be pre-sent from 5-6pm. If you are interested, please contact Charla Macicek,

[email protected], 713-861-2702.
