TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The tradition of anointing the sick with blessed oil is
very old, but developed slowly and unevenly in the first
eight centuries of the church’s life. St. Augustine, who
wrote volumes of homilies from his thriving church in
North Africa, plus pastoral directives, letters, and mem-
oirs, never mentions it at all. We know from ancient pray-
ers that it did happen in Rome, Milan, Gaul, and the Brit-
ish Isles. In Rome the bishop blessed the oil of the sick,
but it could be applied by a priest, deacon, or a layperson.
It seems that sick persons could even anoint themselves.
St. Genevieve of Paris was known for anointing the sick in
her care.
Perhaps inevitably, complaints of abuses, and even
trickery by sorcerers, brought an end to this consoling
practice. In a dangerous world with a dispersed population,
clerics may have preferred that this hands-on care was a
lay privilege. The purpose of anointing, however, was not
simply healing, but forgiveness of sin and an experience of
saving power of Christ. By the year 800, dioceses every-
where were organizing rituals for priestly anointing. Alt-
hough anointing of the sick is reserved to priests today,
perhaps this treasured memory will enrich the future of the
sacrament.

ADOPT-A- FAMILY PROJECT ---GOING WELL !!!
The Knights of Columbus members distributed all the envelopes last Sunday with gift requests for the
Adopt-a-Family Project. Please return the wrapped gifts no later than Sunday, December 21st to the
parish office or to the Church. All gifts will be placed around the altar on that Saturday/Sunday. Be
sure and write the name of the person who is to receive the gift on the outside of the package. Also, the
2nd collection allowed every parishioner to participate in this year's Christmas Project for the needy
families. The collection was $2,770.00. These funds will be used to purchase gift cards from Fiesta
Markets for the families and other charities. Thank you, thank you, thank you kindly for your generosi-
ty and wonderful spirit of sharing with others during this Christmas season.
SPECIAL BLESSING FOR EXPECTING COUPLES - NEXT SATURDAY/SUNDAY
The fourth Sunday of Advent is especially dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus whose
birthday is now only a few days away. This last Sunday before the great Christmas Feast reminds us
that she is to be the mother of God's Son. Mary gave birth to Jesus and nourished and protected her infant son. Motherhood is a
most sacred and blessed vocation. The Church respects all life and next Sunday will offer a blessing to all couples (soon to be moth-
ers and fathers) who are expecting new life. Next week-end expecting couples will be invited to the front of the Church for a special
blessing asking God's care and protection upon them and the new baby soon to be born.

Formation Classes for children and youth begin Christmas Holidays on Dec. 18. Classes will resume on January 6 in the public
schools and Jan. 11 on the church campus. Renew your life in Christ during this holy season.
Religious Formation registration remains open all year. Give your child or the child of someone you know the gift that lasts for
eternity – a formation in our Christian faith. Forms can be found in the foyer of the church or you may register electronically on the
parish website. Also, we take registration at class times on Sunday and Wednesdays as well as at the public schools. We are a par-
ish that believes in reaching out to share the faith with all.
Thank you to the parish for the help in the formation for our children, youth and adults through the special collection on Nov.
22/23. The donation came to $2,000. We also shared 400 Spiritual books with many in our distribution after the masses on that
weekend. We hope you took one and are enjoying it. We will announce where further books can be had in January. There will be
discussions on some of these books in the New Year. Follow the schedule which will appear in the bulletin. Please continue your
generosity in support of efforts to share the faith.
Bible Study during the Christmas holidays beginning on Dec. 20 through Jan. 4 will be discontinued. We’ll pick up again on
Jan. 11 with the English group meeting at 9:45 AM and the Spanish at 11:30 AM.

MORE THAN DISCIPLES
Each of today’s four scriptural roles—disciple, prophet, apos-
tle, herald - forms a facet of our life in Christ as we live it day by
day. Isaiah tells us that a prophet is anointed, as we were anointed
at our baptism in water and the Spirit, to bring glad tidings and to
promote God’s reign of healing, justice, and peace. An apostle,
like Paul, is one who is “sent.” Each of us, in his or her own way,
is sent by Christ to be a voice of rejoicing, to encourage prophetic
voices in the world, and to make sure that the work of the Spirit
thrives. John the Baptist shows us the job of the herald, making
the Lord’s way straight, announcing the coming of the Light of the
world.
Today we also hear from Mary, model disciple. Her song,
the Magnificat, shows us the world we must believe in and work
for: one in which God is praised, where God’s favor is bestowed
on the humble, where the hungry are filled and the rich are sent
away empty, a world that continues to know and rejoice in the
mercy of God that lasts for all ages.
