ALL SAINTS

ACADEMY

Dear Parents

What a difference a year makes! This time last year we had just taken possession of our external All Weather Pitch (see picture). One year on, after careful maintenance, we now have beautiful grounds and four excellent tennis courts. In addition to this, we have state of the art cycle parking and a campus of which we can be proud.

The Academy is getting ever busier and from a school roll of 529 in 2012 we currently have approximately 700 students. In September 2014 we shall house 880 students – a full Academy! We are now oversubscribed in Year 7 and we have a waiting list, and numbers continue to rise in Year 9.

The atmosphere around the Academy is excellent and student behaviour at all times is extremely positive. Visitors continue to tell us how calm the environment is at All Saints.

I am obviously proud that we are very calm because we do wish the best preparation for all Year 11, 12 and 13 students who will be sitting examinations in May and June. We will do our best to continue to have high levels of behaviour, politeness and citizenship so that all students sitting their exams

From the Principal have the best possible lead in for these very important tests. Good luck to all students in these busy times and I look forward to some excellent

results in the Summer.

In the meantime, the Academy facilities continue to be a focus for local schools and I

am delighted that we have entered teams for new sports for the first time, for example Tennis,

Dodgeball and Gymnastics. We acknowledge excellent reports from two major visits recently:

the visit to Krakow was a universal success and our third Sports Tour to Holland was the best one so far. As we now move close to our first full cohort as an 11-18 Secondary School I look forward to an even greater range of extra-curricular activities.

NEW MINIBUS I am pleased to announce that the Academy now has a new, second minibus. This is a modern, lightweight transit minibus which seats 14 people. It is proving to be a valuable resource, which helps to provide students with access to school fixtures, visits and residentials, as well as extra-curricular activities. Many of the Academy’s staff have already undertaken minibus driver training to allow them to drive the new vehicle safely. Fortunately, this includes all the Academy P.E. staff. It now means getting to fixtures and sports events is made easier, with more students able to participate.

Not only has this lifted the spirits of the staff and students, but gives good consideration to the Academy’s profile within the community and provides our students with better opportunities to visit new places and learn new things.

Year 10 Business students had to come up with a NEW juice brand. The winning team was invited to attend the Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd in London on Wednesday 19 March 2014. The visit was completely free of charge and involved a short video presentation on Business Marketing and a tour of the Coca-Cola plant.

This visit benefited the students by bringing the industry alive giving them a first-hand experience of the manufacturing and business world.

The visit provided our students with the opportunities to make connections between work done in the classroom and real life business practices.

In addition, it supported them with the preparation for the world of work, and enhanced delivery of the national curriculum, supporting the work-related and enterprise agenda.

Our fantastic new bike shelters were officially opened for use on Friday 2 May when Dave Osborne, the Bicycle Drummer of ‘Puncture Kit’, did the honours before leading an assembly for Year 7, encouraging them to aspire, strive and achieve their passions, whether it’s music, sport, academic study or a career path. Students were even able to try their skills on Dave’s drums, which is built around his bike frame and converts from drum kit to bike in five minutes.

Shelters over the bike-parking area were one of those things not provided by the new building programme. We were really fortunate to get support from SUSTRANS in finding a grant from Central Bedfordshire Council for the full amount for superb new shelters, installed before Easter. As the British Summer approaches, students know that their bikes and scooters are not only safe but also dry for their return journeys home, which is a further encouragement to use them for getting to school.

Many thanks to Dave Osborne, Derek Smulders from SUSTRANS, and Nick Shaw from CBC for their help and support at the Academy.

Ian Rose visited our students this term to provide them with sessions relating to their confidence, challenges and goal-setting. The students thoroughly enjoyed the session with each of them setting 3 short term goals to achieve. These goals are individually related to each student and have been checked against the students’ progress. In the afternoon Ian organised and taught a Judo session where students learnt the basics of Judo and were able to see the strength of our Paralympian medallist. The day was a great success and students are more motivated than ever to plan our Sky Sports Summer Festival.

As our first year of Sixth Form is coming to a close, choosing the career path we are going to take after studying at All Saints is becoming more and more important. Luckily enough, at All Saints we are regularly given opportunities which help things become a lot clearer during this very stressful time. On 26 March 2014 the A Level Psychology students visited the University of Bedfordshire for the day to get an insight into what a Psychology course entails at university. We started the day by taking a tour of the University; visiting classrooms, lecture theatres and social areas, and we even got to look at the accommodation. Additionally, we got to visit Moot Court, which is where law students practise their theory – the layout was similar to the one of a real court. It was really interesting to be told how psychology links in with law. I was really impressed with the overall building and the facilities there - the design and furnishings are also very new and modern! After lunch, we went to a ‘mini’ half hour lecture that the University had put on especially for us, so we knew what to expect from a Psychology lecture. The lecture was about aggression, and explained what aggression is and how it manifests itself – explaining the frustration-aggression hypothesis. Next on the agenda was an interactive workshop in which we learnt about research methods. The lecturers conducted an experiment with us as the participants, which involved us filling out a form on our original opinions on the death penalty. Then, after showing different scenarios on a slideshow involving the death penalty (real life court cases) we filled out the same form to see if our opinions had changed. This was really beneficial as it gave us as students a chance to revise research methods (in an applied way) as it’s a topic that is coming up in our exam this May. This visit to the University really opened my eyes to what a Psychology course at University has to offer.

On Wednesday 30 April 2014 All Saints Academy was delighted to host a visit by members of the Dunstable Rotary Club. President Roger Sharp and his wife, Margaret were joined by Trevor Rix (Secretary), Barry Sinfield, Reg Fossey, Robin Fletcher and Clare Tozer-Roodt for a tour of the Academy with Tom Waterworth.

Our visitors were very impressed with the building and the calm atmosphere and have expressed an interest in working with our students as they prepare for the world of work. We very much look forward to a second meeting when we will agree the best way forward on this.

The Rotary Club is an organisation of men and women of all ages who are business and professional people or community leaders keen to utilise their skills and resources to help others. For information there are 33,000 clubs in some 200 countries boasting 1.2 million members.

Year 10 Catering students visited Priory House for Afternoon Tea on Monday 28 April 2014. The visit was very successful and students gained hands-on experience of Presentation and Service of Afternoon Tea. Students were inspired by the excellent service and presentation of the food and drinks, which included more than 20 different flavoured teas, freshly-made scones served with homemade jam and cream, and a variety of cakes and freshly-made sandwiches. Students asked detailed questions and walked away with lots of information and inspiration for their Controlled Assessment.

Thank you to the excellent staff at Priory House and well done to all the students who attended, as they were outstanding representatives for the Academy on the day. Also, thanks to the teaching and support staff who enabled this visit to go ahead.

In the Easter holidays the Sport, Health and Leisure Curriculum Area took 30 enthusiastic sports students on the annual Sports Tour to Valkenburg, Holland. The students were a credit to themselves and the Academy and they enjoyed a fun-filled packed week of sport, which included 3 basketball fixtures per team, 2 training sessions, bowling, tobogganing, laser tag and a tour of PSV Eindhoven Football Stadium. The Students seemed to embrace a different culture and country and enjoyed competing against what were competitive, experienced Dutch and Belgium basketball teams; both the boys and girls basketball teams did themselves proud. On our return to the Academy a Sports Tour awards presentation was held to celebrate our success whilst in Holland, so well done to all students involved and congratulations to the following winners of the awards:

We would like to say well done to the students who received an Easter egg for maintaining 100% attendance this academic year. Keep up the good work! Students also received rewards for being on or above our Academy target of 95%, and for most improved attendance. Tutor groups with 100% attendance for a continued number of weeks are being rewarded with a free lunch; some have decided on ordering pizza while others have chosen chicken and chips. If any students have any ideas for future rewards please let me know. Medical Appointments A reminder to Parents/Carers that medical appointments should be made out of school hours where possible. We do appreciate that this is sometimes difficult and would ask that students only take the necessary time out of school, not the whole day. Medical evidence will be requested for all students. Punctuality Please ensure that your child arrives on time for school. Students need to be on the Academy premises by 8.25am so that they will not be late to registration at 8.30am. Students who arrive late will be required to do a 20 minute detention on the same day. Failure to attend will result in an hour detention with their Achievement Leader on a Friday afternoon. Being frequently late for school adds up to lost learning:

Arriving 5 minutes late every day adds up to over 3 days lost each year Arriving 15 minutes late every day is the same as being absent for 2 weeks a year Arriving 30 minutes late every day is the same as being absent for 19 days a year

Attendance & Persistent Absentees The Academy attendance target is 95%; any students below this will be monitored and if they drop below 85% All Saints Academy will need medical evidence to be able to approve any absence. Medical evidence can be any one of the following: a copy of an appointment card/letter, a note from the GP/Practice Nurse giving reason for absence, a copy of a prescription made out to the student, or any other suitable documentary evidence. A decision on whether or not to authorise the absence will be made by the Academy. To give you an example of how your child’s attendance can be affected please see the facts below:

20 days off per school year = 90% attendance 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks off school 90% attendance in Years 7 – 11 means half a year off school 90% attendance for your child throughout Primary and Secondary School means they will have missed a whole year of school in their education

Absence All Absences should be reported at the earliest possible convenience on each day of absence, by calling 01582 619700 and selecting Option 2. Please be aware if the Academy has not been advised of student absence there is every likelihood that Mr Copperwheat (Education Welfare Officer) will carry out a door knock and visit the family home. Holidays during term time Mr Copperwheat is supporting the Academy in the use of Fixed Penalty Notices where parents/carers take students out of the Academy for a holiday. Penalty Notice fines for holidays in term time are £60 per parent per child if paid within 21 days and £120 if paid between 22 and 28 days. May I thank you for your continued support in ensuring that attendance at All Saints Academy continues to improve. Mrs Emma Gaskell

A reminder to Parents/Carers that the Academy does not employ a nurse and members of staff are not

medically trained. However, a number of staff are trained in First Aid. The following procedure should be

followed in the event of a first aid incident or in the event that a student feels unwell:

If a student feels unwell, they should report to Student Reception where a first aid trained member of

staff will make an assessment. Students are encouraged in the majority of cases to return to lessons

unless they are obviously very unwell. It is worth noting that the Academy cannot issue painkillers to

students and any student reporting a headache will be assessed, offered a drink of water and

encouraged to return to class as soon as possible with the option of returning if they continue to feel

unwell or their symptoms become worse.

If a first aid trained member of staff feels that a student is too unwell to remain in school, they will

contact the Parent/Carer to get permission to send the student home or to make arrangements for the

student to be collected.

Only once all of these steps have been followed are students permitted to sign out of the Academy.

Students should NOT contact their Parents/Carers via mobile phones and ask to be collected without the

above procedures having been followed, otherwise the absence will be recorded as unauthorised.

The Academy thanks Parents/Carers for their continued support in this regard.

FIRST AID PROCEDURES

A reminder for all Parent/Carers to please advise the Academy of any change of address or telephone

numbers.

It is important that our records are up-to-date, and the correct telephone numbers are vital in order that we

can make contact in the event of an emergency.

EMERGENCY CONTACT DETAILS
