All of us can remember
the good ole days. When you
could happily catch fireflies for an
entire evening. When money is-
sues were handled by whoever
was the banker in "Monopoly."
And it wasn’t odd to have two or
three "best" friends. When being
old referred to anyone over 20
years of age. When the net on a
tennis court was the perfect height
to play volleyball – with no real
rules. Remember when the worst
thing you could catch from the
opposite sex was "cooties." How
it was magic when dad would
"remove" his
thumb. Re-
member when
you were final-
ly tall enough
to ride the "big
people" rides at
the amusement park and when a
foot of snow was a dream-come
true. And the best part for me was
how you could correct any mis-
take by yelling, "do over!"
Well the good ole days are
not done! We are bringing those
good ole days back. This will oc-
cur in our worship experience
through biblical preaching and
some of our most loved hymns of
the Christian experience. We are
the visible and yet invisible
church in worship on Sunday.
A man was walking
through an art gallery when he
came upon a picture of the Lord
Jesus dying upon the cross. He
stopped and looked at the beauti-
ful portrait of Calvary's love. As
he stared into the face of Christ,
so full of agony the gallery guard
tapped him on the shoulder.
"Lower," the guard said. "The art-
ist painted this picture to be appre-
ciated from a lower position."
So the man bent down.
And from this lower position he
observed new beauties in the pic-
ture not previously shown.
"Lower," said the guard. "Lower
still." The man knelt down on one
knee and looked up into the face
of Christ. The new vantage point
yielded new beauties to behold
and appreciate.
But motioning toward the
ground, the guard said, "Lower.
You've got to go lower." The man
now dropped down to two knees
and looked up. Only then
as he looked up at the
painting from such a low
posture could he realize the
artist's intended perspec-
tive. Only then could he
see the full beauty of the
cross.
Is this not true in worship?
Only as we position ourselves
lower and lower in humble sub-
mission can we behold more
clearly the glories of our wonder-
ful Lord.3 If you want to really
come to know God, you can find
Him in a worship service every
Sunday at Teague United Method-
ist Church. See you in worship.

M E T HODIST VISI T OR
The Visible and Yet Invisible
Church True biblical worship so
satisfies our total personality that
we don’t have to shop around for
man-made substitutes. William
Temple made this clear in his
masterful definition of worship:
“For worship is the submission
of all our nature to God. It is the
quickening of conscience by His
holiness; the nourishment of
mind with His truth; the purifying
of imagination by His beauty; the
opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of will to His pur-
pose—and all of this gathered up
in adoration, the most selfless
emotion of which our nature is
capable and therefore the chief
remedy for that self-centeredness
which is our original sin and the
source of all actual sin.”1
Wayne Gruden supports this con-
cept of worship. Gruden says:
“In its true spiritual reality as
the fellowship of all genuine be-
lievers, the church is invisible.
This is because we cannot see the
spiritual condition of people’s
hearts.”2 We can see who out-
wardly attends the church, and
we can see outward evidences of
inward spiritual change, but we
cannot actually see into people’s
hearts and view their spiritual
state—only God can do that. This
is why Paul says, “The Lord
knows those who are his” (2 Tim. 2:19).
So when we worship we
are responding to an idea that is
the visible and yet invisible
church. The music and message
is what brings our hearts to con-
template a life we have and con-
tinue to have with God. Worship
