WHEN TO GOThe weather in Thailand is generally marked by three seasons, the rainy season, hot season, and cool season. In cool season (Nov-Feb), temperatures are comfort-able. In rainy season (May-Oct), you will find the lush landscape but some islands shut down and boat service is limited during stormy weather. Be flexible with travel plans. Hot season (Mar-Apr) is ideal for beaches.

Built in 1865, Wat Chai Si is famous for its murals which beautify the interior and exterior of the temple’s chapel. The classic murals in indigo, white, and yellow tempera were painted by Maha Sarakham painter Thong Thipcha. The exterior murals depict eight hells, Jetsantara Jataka, and folk tales of Sanga Silchai which greatly influence Isan lifestyle. The temple also houses a folk museum with a large collection of antiques and utensils.

The route to explore ‘Sims’In Khon Kaen, there are a number of ‘Sims’ or small chapels for religious Buddhist ceremonies in different districts. Tours can be organised to explore and learn about this province’s sims and/or those of other nearby provinces, such as Roi Et and Maha Sarakham. More information is available at the TAT Khon Kaen Office.

In front of them, there are statues of two men stretching their legs. All sculptures were made by Luang Por Phui, a teacher at the temple. The interior surfaces of the concrete walls contain murals depicting local lifestyles, Jataka, heaven, hell, and folk tales. It seems the painter had a lot of freedom to work here and create Hoop Taem filled with lively feelings.

Khon Kaen is known as the land of the dinosaurs as the first dinosaur fossils were found in Amphoe Phu Wiang in 1976. Later surveys led to discoveries of dinosaur fossils of various species, and the establish-ment of this research centre. The centre was set up by the co-opera-tion of the Mineral Resources Department, TAT, and Khon Kaen Province for research and general study. The museum features much scientific knowledge, including the origin of the universe, evolution of dinosaurs and their extinction, and a glass-walled workshop where visitors can watch staff working with dinosaur fossils.

The City Pillar Shrine is one of the first places that tourists visit, a sacred place where visitors pay homage. When darkness falls, the shrine is illuminated and becomes a serene place. It was built due to the initiation of a famous monk, Pra Ratchasarm Muni, and a former governor, Luang Suranai Pinit. Stone inscriptions from Amphoe Chum Phae were brought here for a religious ceremony and the shrine was set up on 20 August 1956.

Special places for special eventsAn impressive party can be created in special venues, such as spacious historical sites and provincial cultural centres. Co-ordination is required with the authorities in these cases.
