I would like to thank everyone for attending our dispersal sale. I would also like to thank all our past customers who have purchased bulls from us over the years. Without your support, it would all have been for naught. All of the cattle that we are selling are good sound, quiet animals with good feet and good udders. We have always had a strict set of guidelines that we follow. We don’t toler-ate attitude at all. You have a good udder and good feet and calve unassisted and raise a big calf. If you do all of these things you stay, if not, you go to town. No exceptions. Color has never been a priority. When looking for herd bulls, we are very fussy. Jay Good can attest to this as he has looked at a number of bulls for us that didn’t measure up. All of the herd bulls that are to be sold all have good dispositions, produce good daughters, have good feet (we don’t trim feet, just once right behind the ears) and are all performance bulls that calve ease. The polled 16U is a virgin 2 year old so is unproven, but I feel he will be a performance bull that should calve well.All of the calves will have their first Ivomec Gold shot and Ivomce and age verified. Cows will have their spring shots and Ivomec again as they were done in the fall for lice. Bulls and bull calves will have their shots and Ivomec. All of the bull calves are intact and a lot of the calves will be in the 300 – 400 lb range by sale day. The cows will not be fat as we don’t feed grain to our cows or herd bulls. The heifers are normally grained for about 6 weeks, 4 lbs/day after weaning, then on baled silage – nothing else.We sell all our calves the third Thursday of September every year and our steer calves have always been in the 800 – 900 lb weight class. After a 4% shrink, heifers are in that 750 – 800 lb range. A 4% shrink included in last year’s sale receipt. We kept all the heifers last fall so it is just steer calves. Welcome to the Tatshenshini Simmental Dispersal

This event will be unique to the registered cattle world as far as the concept of dispersing a cowherd. Traditionally, a dispersal would be held in the fall so the calves could be harvested from their pregnant mothers. This time they are selling as a unit with the cows open, ready to re-breed by their new owners. Selling registered “pairs” allows the buyer to access 2 new animals with papers with one bid! If John and Lynne weren’t re-locating and didn’t have a farm sale booked already, these wouldn’t be selling until fall either.To think that John Smith approached genetics “lightly” would be a huge error. The base cows to the Fleckvieh herd were purchased from MFL, Richmond, Marralyn, Van Ankum, JB Livestock and Fleckvieh Fest. While analyzing the catalog, you will see in the backgrounds of the pedigrees influential bulls of the breed like King Arthur, Solway Adonis, Texas Lonestar and Romulus. It’s one thing to buy top cows to build a herd from, but without accessing a bull battery to breed them to, it won’t advance. That’s where the LaBatte bred herdsires come in. Firstly, came “Journeyman”, who will still sell at 10 years of age and is as sound as a 3 year old. Of course he, being mothered by MFL Satin 31S, is a maternal brother to Bar 5 Sir Arnold 414C as well as being a paternal brother to IPU Bronson 19K. Pretty nice company close in the family tree! The homegrown Journeyman son, “Napoleon”, also now has many daughters in the sale. The second bull to show up from “Gladmar” was “Warrior 26S” and was directed to anchor the expansion side of the new Red Purebred herd. This son of the famous “Red Chief” was the high sell-ing bull in his own respective year. Semen was retained for in herd use by the LaBatte’s and consequently the “lead-off” bulls recently at their 2011 bull sale were sons of “26S” as well as siring top selling heifer calves.To think that John’s cattle are “wild” would also be a huge error. As Leanne Zukowski, who took the pictures commented, “I have pictured a lot of cattle over the years but I have never pictured a herd as quiet as this before. First we gave him the bottom end cows because he has some birth weight. His first calf crop was no problem. All were born unassisted and the calves looked pretty good. By 2007 he had earned the number 1 spot in our bull pen. About 90% of his calves are solid colored with double goggles. He has just as much performance as his sire. A little more I think. The only time we touch a calf is if it is a mal-presentation. His daughters are really good and as a group are our best young cows. They all have really good feet, good udders and are really quiet. He was purchased to breed some of our 1L and 1N daughters and follow our 68R bull in developing a red program. He is a very quiet bull who is an easy calver. We have used him on heifers with no problems. His calves have good performance and his daughters look like they are going to make good cows. They are quiet, good udders, good feet, calve easily and mother up good. He is just coming into his prime. He is also homozygous polled. Most of his calves are that deep red color. He also has a small semen bank. At the recent LaBatte Simmentals Bull Sale, four 26S sons sold for an average of $8310, and five heifers averaged $2840.

Barry LaBatte also thought he was a good bull because he was runner up. I had a good laugh over that. I looked long and hard for quite a few years for a Fleckvieh bull to follow our 1L and 1N bulls. His pedigree, I felt, would be a good match to our 1L and 1N bloodline. So we decided he was coming here after the sale. The first year we only got 5 calves because our bull went out February 12 – 15 and it was March 17th before we got him home. At first I was a little disappointed in these calves, but by fall they looked okay. We didn’t use him the second year because of a broken underground water line to two pens. This year’s calves look good. They are a dark red color, come easily and are double goggled. Quite a few have red feet. His calves, whether male or female, will be easy to sell to other breeders or com-mercial buyers because of the color. He is a bull that is just coming into his prime.

BW: 90.Gunner is a bull we bought last spring from Bar None in Westlock to use on heifers. As soon as I saw him I liked the look of him. He profiled like our other herd bulls and I thought he would fit right in. The dark red color and pedigree were a bonus. Paul said that if he didn’t sell, they would have used him themselves. So I figured if they would use him on their heifers, he would work for me. I also liked that he was not too fat and seemed quiet. He has continued to grow and mature. And at two, he is a bull I really like the look of. His calves come easily and are up in no time.

With Emperor sire and the 8M Baltimore C&B bloodline, he would be something that was new to our bloodline. If we decided to use him ourselves or if we decided to sell him, he would be an outcross to most polled bloodlines being used. He has lots of performance and is going to be a performance bull that will calve okay with the color of 8M Baltimore C&B. If he is used on dark red cows, I think his calves will be dark red. She is our best cow and has always raised our best calf every year. 2T is out of our Napolean bull and I feel he is a better bull than his sire. He is a bull that has it all. He is long, deep, thick, good disposition, good feet, nice bone structure and is easy keeping. His pedigree is really deep in tried and proven ancestors. From Houston/Journeyman/Napoleon on the male side to 10J - 73F (who has over 20 daughters, grand daughters and great grand daughters in our herd) and Napoleon’s mother, 20C (a 8M/Bold/Bavarian/Neff cow) who was one of our best cows and one of Ross Marra’s flush cows. I feel his daughters will be really good. So if you are looking to raise some first class females, he is just coming into his prime and should have a long career ahead of him. His bull calves will be good also. He will be a performance bull that will calve easily. If we were staying in the cattle industry, he would take our 1L bull’s place and 1L would become our spare bull. 2T is just too good to be a spare bull and deserves to be more than a spare bull. I feel 2T is our best bull.

10J is our Solway Adonis daughter that is out of MFL 73F, who was bought out of the MFL dispersal. 10J was the first calf 73F had here. 10J is by far our best cow and was flushed to Titanic producing 8 freezable embryos. She has never had a bad calf and each year her calf is by far our best, be it male or female. The quality of her offspring is evident by her 3 daughters; JLS 48P, JLS 42N and JLS 125W. 125W I feel, is the best heifer that we have ever raised. Jay tried to get me to bring 42N to Fleck Select as an open, but she stayed here. 125W he said was good enough to bring to National Trust this year and her son, 2T, speaks for himself. She has only had one broken colored calf, an Eisenherz calf that was half white. If I was the new owner I would flush her to a homozygous polled bull because she would sure give you a bunch of calves that would bring some attention and money. There is also 2 embryos that would be full siblings to her Solway Adonis - 73F that are U.S. qualified. Unfortunately, she had stillborn twins this year. Her bull calves have always been near the top of the pen and her daughters are all good cows. Two of her daughters take after her in that she was always skinny until she got to 6 years old before she put on any condition. I feel that she is our number 2 cow and is also worthy to be flushed. Full Fleck and comes with 10 straws of 1N semen. She has a heifer calf at side.

She is another of the second calvers that is a little thin, so don’t judge her by her condition. Judge her after you see her calf and you will see why.
