All of Me - John Legend
Takeaways1. It makes good use of the Post-Chorus concept. Having a post-chorus was one of Jason Brawner's "31 things Hit songwriters are doing that you're not"2. Surprised John Legend used a very standard minor pop progression, always think of this songs as being more jazzy and complex.3. Chorus Melody's structure, 2 held out phrases, then 2 fast rhythmic phrases, then Post-Chorus.
Structure1. There's a Chorus and an interesting Post-Chorus. The Chorus is rhythmic, the post chorus is long sustained notes, in high register.
Intro 4Verse 16Pre: 8Chorus: 16Post Chorus: 8Verse 16Pre 8Chorus: 16Post Chorus:8Bridge: 8Chorus: 8Post Chorus:16
Harmony1. Verse uses standard minor pop chord prog2. Pre, Chorus and Bridge have a jazz circle of 5ths type progression. vi ii V
Verse: vi IV I VPre: iim vim V iim vi VChorus: I vi ii VPost Chorus: vi IV IBridge: iim vi V iim
Melody1. The verse melody rhythm changes a lot. Changes in rhythm make it seem more organic. It makes the craft more invisible.2. Chorus melody has held notes first half, and then 8th note melody second half
