All Natural Homemade Foundation

I’ve had quite a few requests for a homemade foundation. After giving you homemade mascara

(http://thankyourbody.com/all-natural-homemade-mascara/), homemade blush

(http://thankyourbody.com/homemade-blush/), bronzer (http://thankyourbody.com/homemade-bronzer-all-

natural-and-so-easy/), and lip balm (http://thankyourbody.com/make-lip-balm/) I really wanted to give you a

good foundation. Of course foundation is tricky. For one, it covers the whole face. It needs to go on well, stay

put, match skin tones, and not clog your pores.

A hefty task, indeed.

This has also been a challenge for me on a personal/psychological level. I know. I’m talking about makeup, not

some childhood phobia. But after battling acne (http://thankyourbody.com/grateful-for-acne/) and bad skin for

so long, and relying so heavily on thick foundations to “cover up” my imperfections, I have finally come to a place

where I feel really good in my skin. I rarely use makeup at all these days. I don’t know if you can understand just

how huge this is.

But still, I’ve been promising a homemade foundation for a long time, so today I’m making good on that

promise. Because of its nature, however, there are a few things you should know about the recipe I’m about to

give you:

This is not an exact science. It requires some experimentation to get a color that works for you.

This is not like your typical foundation that you buy in the mall, grocery store, or from your

Avon rep. It’s totally natural (yay!) but may not “do the job” in the way you are used to. Maybe it

will. That really depends on your skin type and your expectations.

Just because it’s all natural doesn’t mean it’s perfect for your skin.

Let’s talk about that third point for just amoment.

If you a familiar with my bronzer recipe (http://thankyourbody.com/homemade-bronzer-all-natural-and-so-

easy/) you’ll notice that this foundation recipe is very similar. Simple ingredients that you can usually find in your

kitchen at any time. Awesome, right? Yes. But you still need to proceed intelligently.

For example:

This recipe, like my bronzer, has the option of using finely ground cinnamon. According to this article

(http://www.livestrong.com/article/91597-benefits-ground-cinnamon-skin/#ixzz2AHJu34g5), cinnamon can be

very beneficial for your skin. But some individuals find that it causes redness. When we remember that herbs

and spices are potent and powerful this makes sense. Depending on our unique set of circumstances, even the

most harmless ingredient may not be a good fit. There is nothing toxic in this recipe but I still urge you to try out

a sample and decide if this is a good “every day makeup alternative” for you or not.

The good news it that you can make a really tiny batch for sampling.

This homemade foundation vs. mineral makeupBefore I finally said “good bye” to my commercial make up I was wearing a nice (expensive) mineral foundation.

And just so you know, there are recipes out there to teach you how to make your own mineral make up and

where to get ingredients. And for some, mineral make up is seen to have a lot of benefits.

But I personally still don’t feel completely confident in most of the ingredients. Some ingredients like Mica are

common skin irritants. Many contain Titanium Dioxide which I don’t feel really comfortable putting on my face

every day. You’d need to do your own research and have a trusted source for quality ingredients if mineral make

up interests you. But if your are looking for a homemade foundation that is like your mineral make up, this is a

place to start (http://www.bbinsideout.com/how-to-make-homemade-mineral-foundation/).

Okay, enough stalling. Let’s do this!

Jojoba, Olive, or Almond Oil (optional)

Directions:

1. Start with a base of arrowroot powder (1 tsp. for dark skin – 1 Tbs. for light skin)

2. Slowly add in one or combination of the cocoa powder, cinnamon, or nutmeg until you reach your

desired tone.

3. If you want more of a “compact” foundation, add some jojoba/olive/almond oil to the mixture and press

down into a compact. (Start with 5 drops and keep adding until it reaches your desired texture).

Use a brush to apply foundation. Make sure to tap off excess before swiping face.

You may notice that my foundation is ridiculously light in color… that’s because I’m ridiculously pale. A little

cocoa powder for me really is all I need to add. But yours will look different, don’t worry.

Since I know someone will ask for it, here is a before and after picture. It’s subtle, but I do think the homemade

foundation smooths things out and takes out some of the redness in my face. Plus it provides a nice

“foundation” for any other makeup I might want to put on.

(Sorry for the awkward pics… this is what you get when I have to take them myself.)

Absolutely no make up on the left, only foundation on the right:

There you go! Have fun. And enjoy how yummy your face will smell, too.

It may be worth spending some time on the EWG Skin Deep website and

searching by make-up type and choosing one with the lowest score (anything green or yellow is

best). Expect to have to search to find the product and pay a bit, but it’s best to be safe with a

young one.

Hi Kelley!

Know you asked your question a while back but if you still need some suggestions, here are a

few, and all can be purchased at http://www.spiritbeautylounge.com

(http://www.spiritbeautylounge.com) You can also visit the product websites for more in depth

info about each line:

Alima Pure (mineral make up)

Vapour Organics (cream make up in either stick or pump bottle)

W3LL People (cream make up in stick form, a little less hydrating than Vapour)

RMS Beauty Un Cover Up- (cream formula in a little pot) This is a fantastic make up line! But

maybe a bit challenging to work with for someone young. The Powder from this line, Un

Powder, is amazing as well. It contains only one ingredient, silica. And it feels like absolute

velvet on the skin.

For mascara, it’s a bit trickier. NONE of them on the market are totally free and clear of nasties.

But, there are a couple that come pretty darn close. And, what you have to remember is that

they are still leaps and bounds above your mainstream brands in terms of safety. These

mascaras are: 100 Percent Pure and Kjaer Weiss

These are all stellar lines containing great ingredients…happy shopping!

Thank you so much! I’ve been waiting all weekend for this post . Would grapeseed oil be as

good as the other oils you mentioned if I want a creamy foundation? (I read your post on grapeseed oil last

week.)

Hello, very good article.

I made my own foundation as well, a few weeks ago; it’s great! my recipe is slightly different: I

mixed zinc oxide with some beetroot powder and turmeric powder until I got my shade, then

added some powdered silk protein and some argan oil. Beetroot and turmeric are well-known

for their health and cosmetic benefits and the silk protein gives my skin such a nice soft finish!

just make sure you use only a small amount of turmeric, or eelse you’ll as yellow as liver failure

: )))

what do you think? : )

As for the stage non-toxic make-up, my brother is on stage as well and I gave him some home-

made concoctions of mine : ) : zinc oxide and a bit of white clay made into a paste with argan,

almond oil, ricin oil for that white-ish foundation they always use and for the eyes I made him

a paste of charcoal mixed with aloe vera gel and some argan oil as eyeliner and mascara. as a

blush he uses beetroot powder mixed with just a bit of turmeric powder for the right shade : )

I used your bronzer recipe to make face powder a couple weeks ago. I love it! I smell cookies all

day long when I wear it. I’m going to try using oil to make pressed powder for my daughter since

she makes a mess with the loose powder.

I also made a darker shade to powder the roots of my hair. We ditched shampoo a month ago and this really

helps getting through difficult hair days.

Thank you so much for posting these great recipes that make getting rid of toxic products so easy and

accessible!

Bronzer is usually used more to contour your face… rather than used all over.

Although, I wouldn’t take advice from me on how best to apply it.

I didn’t really measure… but I started with probably 1/2 tsp and just mixed and

added. I would brush a little on the inside of my arm and then keep adding until

it seemed right.

All I can say is . . . WOW!! I work in a drugstore and I am well aware of the ingredients in the

cosmetics and the harm they can cause. This recipe is wonderful!!! I didn’t have any arrowroot powder, so

Also, I do not used commercial hair colour, see above regarding harmful chemicals. Body Art Quality henna

The added oils do not make it oily at all… and you can leave them out and just

use the powder. The oils only give enough moisture to give it some structure, but

I doubt it will make your skin more oily.

I think right now I have Red Mill’s in my fridge. It’s not organic, but they are a

GMO-free company. I haven’t seen organic in my health food store, but I know

I’ve seen it online on Amazon.

Thank you so much for sharing these! These recipes sound so rich and yummy… I can’t wait to try

them! Just wondering though… could you tell me the difference between Arrowroot powder and cornstarch as

far as how they function on our faces? I try and stay away from all corn products due to being gmo, so I was

going to try the bronzer with arrowroot powder. Thanks again

robin (http://thankyourbody.com)

They are pretty similar. I find arrowroot more fine and a better option for

skincare. But you can use either for either recipe.

I tried this some years back with cornstarch, didn’t know about Arrowroot at that time. Anyway,

took the cornstarch and put it into a frying pan on very low heat, continuing to stir with a spatula till it got

darker, to the exact color I wanted.

This looks great! So nice that your recipes use such accessible ingredients I was wondering,

what are your thoughts on adding french green clay to the mix? I’ve heard it has great benefits in skin care for

drawing out toxins but not sure how that’d work in a foundation application. Thanks!

I’ve heard mixed reviews. Some love it. Some say it’s a little too strong to use on

your face all day long. So I’m not sure what I’d recommend. You could always try

a small batch and test it out.

Check out this site: http://empoweredsustenance.com/7-secrets-to-cure-acne-without-

chemicals/ (http://empoweredsustenance.com/7-secrets-to-cure-acne-without-chemicals/)

She mentions honey in the article, and I’ve been using honey to wash my face for several

months.

Quoted from DelightedMomma.com

Why putting honey on your face is a good idea:

It is suitable for all skin types, even sensitive.

It acts as an antibacterial and anti-fungal agent and helps disinfect and speed the healing

process of acne.

It soaks up impurities and helps detoxify your skin.

It is loaded with antioxidants (aka the good stuff your face wants) and helps restore damaged

and wrinkled skin.

It is incredibly moisturizing, but will not break out you.

It naturally cleans your skin and leaves it super soft.

I know it’s been a while since this was posted, but I tend to be somewhat oily

(partly because of my skin, and even more because I tend to overdo it on the jojoba oil

moisturizer), and I have found that if anything it dries me out. I have to make sure I allow my

skin to absorb all the moisturizer it wants before I put it on.

Hmmmm…. not sure why it’s looking gray. Try adding more cinnamon or

The arrowroot gives it lightness, so with darker skin you could probably leave it

would think it would work.

Hm, i have done this recipe but the foundation was like a creamy dark cakemix.

I didnt use nutmeg, just arrowroot powder, cocoa powder and cinnamon.

I think that i took to much olive oil but i added some arrowroot powder just to get the mix lighter and more

solid.

The result was a lighter and more solid thing, but it doesent want to attach on the brush.. Damn.

wondering if this recipe would give the same texture as some of the commercially available brands. Can you use

sandalwood powder instead of cocoa powder to darken the arrowroot (I have fairly light skin with acne scars

and break out occasionally + sandalwood smells nice)? Can this double as concealer? Lastly, (this might sound

silly but…) I love the container that you kept this recipe in (pictured); where can I get something like that?

Robin Konie

July 15, 2013 at 7:00 am (http://thankyourbody.com/homemade-foundation/#comment-89660)

Thank you! As for how this compared to commercial brands… it’s definitely a

lighter foundation. I used to cake on my foundation (way too much) during my

youth to try and cover my acne. This won’t do that (which is probably a good thing because I

often looked like a clown). It’s fairly comparable to mineral makeup, more about evening out

skin tone than covering things up. As far as using it for a concealer… maybe? I haven’t tried,

and you may want to add some more jojoba oil or something to give it a little more staying

power. It might work, but may need some experimentation to get it to that point.

I’ve never personally tried sandalwood, but sounds like it could work.

I got my container at my local health food store (in their herb section). I’m sure you could find

something similar online as well.

Hi,

Thank you so much for you reply. After reading through your articles, a

number of my makeup questions have been solved, but I still found a few

more questions for you. Can I use tapioca powder instead of arrowroot

powder (I have tapioca handy)? I heard somewhere that they are alternatives

to each other; does this apply to makeup too? Also, can I use coconut oil

instead of jojoba/lavender or other oils? I thought of this since it has

antibacterial/anti-fungal/antimicrobial properties too, but I am not sure if it

will last the same way. How long will it be before the finished product starts

to show signs of going bad? How would I know?

After doing some Internet research, I saw someone write that this can double

as concealer if I use a concealer brush (assuming I’ve got the right shade of

color, of course) to focus on problem areas (including under eye dark circles),

and then going over it as foundation using a large foundation brush. I am

guessing that I’d have to add some oil to it to make it more compact and less

powdery. It seems as though it is definitely worth a try since having things

dual-purpose also saves money and space.

I haven’t played with tapioca powder in my makeup, but I

would *think* it would be a great substitute. And yes, you

can switch out the oils for coconut, just know that coconut

oil gets more “butter like” if the temperatures drop and that

can affect what you’re putting it in.

Let me know how the concealer works out!

Hi,

Thank you so much for the great recipe, it

worked great! Both as foundation and as

concealer. It did lessen the darkness

around my eyes and acne scars and

evened out the skin tone. Focused on

problem areas first, as concealer. Then

brushed overall as foundation. Overall, it

gave a nice glowing peachy color that also

looks healthy and not caked on; feels light

too and absorbed moisture on my skin and

kept it dry. It didn’t dry out my skin, just

kept me from looking like I’d been

sweating, so I think that’s a good thing. In

the remote chance of it drying out my skin,

the coconut oil will prevent that, so I would

say it is a safe combination.

I think its the combination of sandalwood

and turmeric that gave the glow since both

of them individually do. I just need to

practice more with my brushes to get the

look perfect, but it is working. This recipe is

a definite keeper. And thank you so much

for that.

I do not expect the coconut to get butter-

like so much since I blended the powders

thoroughly and sifted it. But just in case,

when winter rolls around, I’ll remember

your tip. I used 15 drops (melted) to get a

compact. Right now, it stays in place even if

I turn the container upside down, but

attaches on like powder to both brush and

finger. I guess one can add more oil for a

more “liquid” foundation, but the scent of

coconut could potentially mask the sweet

smell of sandalwood, so that is something

to consider if you prefer that scent. In

mine, the sandalwood scent did get a bit

masked by the coconut scent, but I have to

see how it airs out in a few days.

Hi!

First off, thank you thank you for your incredible website, with how commercialized “natural” make-up products

have become, it is a breath of fresh air to find a site that has both straight-forward and truthful information! I

just made your foundation and the only bump I’ve come across is that mine is quite grainy…obviously due to

the fact that not all my spices were finely ground. How did you tweak yours so that it was able to be more of a

fine powder? I’ve tried the spice grinder but there isn’t really enough of it to get super finely ground.

You’re a goddess, thanks again for looking out for all the women out there!

Wow, you are sweet. Thanks for your kind words.

You could try purchasing a simple mortar and pestle. That might help get the

spices really finely ground.

If you add some turmeric, you’ll get some ‘yellowness’ or like a peachy colour in the loose powder

one.

Turmeric are awesome if you have acne, beacuse it may reduce it faster.

Yeah, I’ve heard about turmeric too. I’d definitely add a pinch for the yellow

undertones as well as its anti-bacterial properties. Even if you don’t have acne, over time, it will

make your skin glow. However, we have to be careful about doing over eyebrows everyday

since turmeric does have hair removal properties; over a long time, the peachy fuzz we have

will reduce, but any reduction of hair in the eyebrow area will be more prominent.

I love homemade makeup, I have made the exact same thing! Besides the nutmeg, I did the 1 T.

baby powder, 1 pinch or 2 of coco, and 1 pinch of cinnamon. I like to make BB creams, and

foundation. With this recipe, you can add stuff like sunscreen lotion, moisturizer, or lotion to turn

it into a liquid foundation. I’m 12 and so this is really helpful:))))

Yeah,

I heard you can, but since the cornstarch is not as fine as arrowroot or tapioca or something,

the texture of the finished product could/would be different depending on how much

cornstarch you are using. I also heard that it absorbs moisture and keeps you dry, so if a

person has oily skin or is prone to a lot of sweating, its a good option. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for this recipe. I made my foundation as a loose powder, which I’ve always

preferred. I’m so fair that my skin is close to porcelain. I don’t have ready access to arrowroot, so I used

cornstarch, which I find to work perfectly for me. My skin is also rather neutral, both cool and warm tones.

My skin tone recipe is as follows:

1 Tbs cornstarch

1/2 tsp cocoa powder

1/8 tsp cinnamon

small pinch of nutmeg

I really want to love this but I think I’m doing something wrong ><

I made a small test batch (half a tbs of arrowroot, half a tsp of cacao, a pinch of nutmeg and and the tiniest

amount of cinnamon). But no matter how I try to apply, it doesn't really cover nor blend in; or when I try to apply

more, it starts itching a bit (although that feeling settles after a while). After an hour I swiped my face with my

hand and the powder just came off, like a lot. I had a film of wonderful smelling 'dust' on my fingers.

I wanted to use this to fill in my bigger pores, and cover up the blotchy redness that I have on my cheeks. I also

have dark acne scars, and some pimples, but I don't think I could cover those without first using concealer.

Could it be because I use an ACV-toner that my skin is too sealed off, or the ACV reacts with some kind of

ingredient causing that tingle?

Would it help to make it a compact? And how do you do that really… do you add the powder to the compact

container, add oil, add more powder, add oil etc. Or do you add oil to all the powder in a mixing jar, and then

press it in the container (with a spoon?)

Thanks so much!

I’d try adding some oil, like jojoba, to the mixture before putting it in the

container to make it more compact. Or maybe even putting a little coconut or jojoba oil as a

moisturizer/base on first might help?

I have been suffering from acne for 12 years now, and tried everything from dairy free and gluten

free, to birth control to oil cleansing method, and whatever else you can think of. I had recently (within the last

couple of years) switched to Origins makeup, and I loved them a lot, but it had become too expensive, and they

weren’t all that “natural” even htough they come off that way. I switched to a brand Whole Body carries, Mineral

Fusion, and it is great, too…but still very expensive $30 for small compact (works great!) and $30 for very

translucent foundation (i dont care for it…doesnt even out my skin tone like it should).

Needless to say, it hasn’t helped my acne or my large pores, and going without makeup would cause a panic

attack for me. No jokes. I have always been super self conscious.

Well, despite the expense, it still has titanium dioxide, mica, and a couple other things that I dont like, even

though the ingredients arent much more than that. So I heard of this recipe and decided to try it.

Here are my questions and concerns:

I am having a very difficult time figuring out if it is my shade or not because of several factors:

lighting in my house

the uneven-ness of my facial skin

the fact that the mixture gets DARK when wet.

Now, I have found a slightly different recipe, and the only difference is the addition of Bentonite clay (great

stuff). Perhaps it is the cause of the darkness when wet, I will experiment more later…

Well, I can’t seem to tell when it is on my skin, and even though it goes on super light, it darkens PAST my

normal skin color and looks VERY splotchy and almost like a got self-tanning lotion on my face. Especially where

my glasses sit on my nose, when I remove them, its poopy brown. I think its the cocoa powder darkening…and I

see that as a common problem, but I dont seem to see anyone else bringing it up.

I scrolled though every comments and so far I seem to be the only one with this issue. How has your experience

been with this makeup so far?

And I don’t dare get my face wet or I will look like a different race. (I’m caucasian). I am part italian so I have a

difficult skin tone to match. I have olive, pink, and yellow undertones, and some blue as well. So…I usually have

to find neutral shades but not all work well.

I think thats all I wanted to say…

Sorry if it sounds scatterbrained.

I haven’t noticed any issues with it coming onto my clothes… as for how long it

wears for… you’re asking the worse person. No matter what makeup I use it

always seems to disappear within twenty or so minutes. This seemed to last as long as the

store stuff, but that’s not necessarily saying anything with my face-repelling skin. Keep in

mind that this is a much more subtle foundation than most commercial brands.

I was really excited about this because:

1) I’m a vegan

2) I’m allergic to metal

Make up you buy in the store seems to either have animal products OR iron oxide, zinc oxide, etc.

I used arrowroot and turmeric, cinnamon, and nutmeg but no cocoa because it has a high nickel content and I

didn’t want to have a reaction.

I also put a small amount of lavender essential oil, coconut oil, and apricot because I get dry skin.

Anyway, I am getting no coverage whatsoever. Maybe less shine but that seems to be it. It dries me out like

crazy which makes my face itchy and all my blemishes are still there, brighter than ever.

Any idea what I could be doing wrong? I’m so disappointed. Has anyone else had trouble getting the foundation

to show up on your face?

Robin Konie

October 23, 2013 at 8:43 am (http://thankyourbody.com/homemade-foundation/#comment-112333)

Could be the cinnamon. Some people have allergic reactions to it… I’d maybe try

it without it and patch test it.

As for the coverage… You could try making it into a liquid foundation by adding the mixture to

a facial moisturizer/lotion, although I haven’t tried it myself.

You could try cornstarch, but it won’t be as “fine” of a powder. Tapioca flour

might also work.
