Greetings and welcome to the 2017 New Plymouth ITU Triathlon World Cup,

I’m thrilled to once again welcome New Plymouth to the World Cup circuit. The Taranki city hosted World Cups in 2005, 2006 and 2008, before breaking from action until 2014 when racing came roaring back, making this year the seventh time our elites will touchdown in New Zealand.

New Zealand’s passion for sport and its outpouring of hospitality always creates a fantastic atmosphere to organize races, making them quick favourites amongst

all the athletes – from Olympic medallists to the weekend enthusiast.

The six World Cups held in the Kiwi country provided New Plymouth with a rich triathlon history. It was here that New Zealand’s own Kris Gemmell and Bevan Docherty engaged in an epic battle down the finish chute in 2005.

Last year was no exception to this history, as two top elites won the titles in momentous occasions. While in 2015, South Africa’s Richard Murray claimed his first-ever career World Cup race in New Plymouth, last year Murray followed up his victory by earning the crown once again for back-to-back titles. While in the women’s race, USA’s Gwen Jorgensen started her 2016 ITU season by competing in her first New Plymouth race and then winning her first World Cup gold medal since 2014.

The phenomenal racing was a reminder that while the ITU World Triathlon Series is the premier level of triathlon in the world, the World Cup events are a crucial part of ITU’s elite pathway and still creates lasting memories. This is why we will always remain committed to the series that was our first, which helped to catapult triathlon to where it is today.

Overall, I encourage all athletes, volunteers, organisers, media and supporters to enjoy the beautiful city of New Plymouth and the spectacle of ITU triathlon. Have a wonderful week-end, and enjoy the 2017 season.

VENUE

The venue is located in the city centre of New Plymouth (Ocean View Parade). The swimming will take place at Ngamotu Beach.

ELITE ATHLETES LOUNGE

Facilities including athletes’ lounge and toilets are provided to the athletes within the Athletes Marquee. Seating, bag storage and sealed bottles of water will be offered to the athletes before and after the race in the athletes’ lounge.

DOPING CONTROL

Doping Control will be performed according to the ITU/WADA rules. Testing will take place at the Yacht Club.

MEDICAL SERVICES

First Aid and Emergency Medical Services will be available at the venue on April 2nd before and during the competition hours.

Medical and paramedical personnel will be available throughout competition times. Several ambulances will be available to provide emergency transfer to hospital. A medical tent will be provided on site at the finish area.

Possible medical services at the venue are free of charge. Treatment in clinics and practices is to be paid by the participants.

Athletes / teams should ensure that they have appropriate medical insurance.

INFORMATION CENTRE / LOC OFFICE

The LOC Information Office is located at the Quality Hotel Plymouth International and is open daily fromThursday, March 30th until Sunday, April 2nd.

A notice board will be posted in the area if the office is unattended.

Training Sessions in the swimming pool

The Todd Energy Aquatic Centre is on Tisch Avenue with additional pedestrian access off the Coastal Walkway. Opening hours - Monday to Friday - Public swimming - 6:00am – 8:15pm

BIKE AND RUN TRAINING

New Plymouth is the major city of the Taranaki Region on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The New Plymouth District includes New Plymouth City and several smaller towns. The district has a population of 74,187 — nearly two thirds of the total population of the Taranaki Region. This includes New Plymouth City (53,400), Waitara (6,483), Inglewood (3,380), Oakura (1,359), Okato (561) and Urenui (429).

New Plymouth would be considered triathlete friendly. In 2010 the city was chosen as one of two walking & cycling “Model Communities” by the government. Based on New Plymouth’s already positive attitude towards cyclists and pedestrians, the city received $3.71m to invest into infrastructure and community programs to boost walking and cycling.

COURSE F A M I L I A R I Z A T I O N

SWIM

You will be able to familiarize yourself with the swimming course on Friday, March 31st from 10:00am. This will take place at Ngamoutu Beach.

Please Note: Ngamotu Beach is a public swimming venue, however you are fobidden to swim out into the shipping channel.

BIKE / RUN

You will be able to familiarize yourself with the bike course on Friday, March 31st at 8:45am. Athletes will gather at Ngamoutu Beach. You will be escorted by police for one lap on the bike course.

Please note, that the official race courses are otherwise open to traffic outside of these time before the races. The race courses are in general NOT suitable for training. Absolutely no riding through the Port Taranaki Office Car Park. The only Exception is in the Course Familiarisation and on Race Day.

Run training will be in your own time and will not be supervised.

COMPETITION RULES

Athletes in these races are competing under the ITU Competition Rules effective December 2016.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE FOP

START

The start area is at Ngamotu Beach. Athletes will be introduced in front of the VIP and will run down to the start platform on the beach and stand in a starting position approximately 70cm wide. The Race Referee with the assistance of ITU Technical Officials, who are assigned to the start, will start each race.

The athletes are required to leave their last minute gear within the Athletes’ Lounge.

SWIM COURSE

The swim is one lap anti-clockwise. The first turn is in 300m, you will then turn slightly left 75m to the second turn again left 75m to the last turn then 300m back to the beach where you will exit via the beach back to transition.

The water temperature in New Plymouth can be expected to be approximately 16 - 19°C in early April.

BIKE COURSEMount bike at mount line and head along Ocean View Parade to the turn around Cone, then back to make a Left turn onto Bayly Road crossing the covered Railway Line and turn left onto Breakwater Road which will morph into St. Aubyn Street. Continue on then make a Right Hand turn into Belt Road, then Right onto Devon Street West, then Right into Calvert Road and Left back onto Breakwater Road, then Right into Bayly Road. Turn left immediately after crossing the Railway Line and follow around until you rejoin Ocean View Parade again. - Athletes complete 4 x 5km laps. - Athletes who are lapped are taken out of the race. The “first runner, last biker” scenario is applicable for this event. In this case the last athlete(s) will be taken off the course once the first runner starts their 3rd lap of the run.

WHEEL STATIONSOne wheel station will be located on the bike course – shortly after the transition area near the Baylys road intersection. This is for athlete wheelsonly. There are no neutral wheels provided.

PENALTY BOX The penalty box is located on Ocean View Parade , on the return leg opposite the wheel station, approximately 100m from Bayley Road.

RUN COURSEThe Run course is a flat course along the seafront on tarmac surface with one short hill each lap. There are two 180° turns per lap. Athletes complete 3 x 1.66km laps.

AID STATIONS The aid station is located on the run course at approximately 0.27km from transition and is accessible on the outward bound leg only. 0.5 litre bottles of sealed water will be handed out.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

New Plymouth has relatively mild weather. Temperatures in April range between 13°C to 20C with an average of 16.9°C.

All the results information will be distributed to the Team Mangers at the LOC Information Office.

PROTEST & APPEAL S

Standard procedures will be followed according to the ITU Competition Rules.

LOC will provide all athletes, coaches, technical officials, journalists, etc. with an official accreditation card according to the ITU Event Operational and Technical Requirements.

Accreditation cards for athletes and coaches will be handed out during the official registration on 31st March before and after the Race Briefing at the Host Hotel. (Quality Hotel - Plymouth International)

Only accredited persons will be allowed to access certain venue areas. Accreditation cards are number coded and provide access to specific areas of the competition areas. All accredited persons are requested to carry their accreditation cards with them at all times and to show them upon request.
