Pictured here are Gordie and Beth Cook along with their son Hank and his wife, Debbie and their children Gordie, Annalise and Mary. Two 95-point cows represent the kind of cows that Cook Farm is building on: RG-JK Shottle Marvel-ET and Cook-Farm Pronto Patty.

Sitting down with Gordon “Gordie” Cook, President of the Holstein Asso-ciation USA and a longtime breeder of over 50 years, you immediately feel the confidence he exudes about the direc-tion of the breed, genomics, his herd and good type. He has the right to have confidence in his operation. In 2009 the farm celebrated its 100th anniversary. Five generations of Cooks have been on the farm.

Gordie worked for many years as a cattle trucker and a feed sales representa-tive. He then came back to help on the farm in 1984 with his brother Peter and his wife Betsy along with their dad, “Pop (Gordon).” Gordie and his wife, Beth, and their children Kara, Hank, Kim, and Nathan kept up the farming tradition with help from Pop, who cherished being needed to help out however he was able. The ever changing times dictated where the focus of the farm needed to be. For many years, the focus was on establish-ing Cook Farm as a top breeding herd. Cook Farm won Premier Breeder for 31 consecutive years at the Massachusetts State Show. The Cooks have sold em-bryos to breeders around the world, from England to Japan to Canada.

With their son, Hank, and his wife Debbie and their five children, the Cooks have run the dairy together since 1992. A long time dream of Beth’s became a reality in 1998 when they opened an ice cream and dairy store “Flayvors of Cook Farm.”(Named after Herronholm Eleva-tions Fayvor (5E-95). It has been run by the family and worked by local kids who have become like family. Flayvors is an important part of the farm’s viability and a great connection to local food and agriculture. Built right next to the dairy, it showcases the cows and its fresh food

What’s Your “FLAYVOR”? Cook Farm has a “FAYVORITE”

used at Flayvors. (http://www.flayvors.com) Many plaques and banners from Cook Farm’s achieve-ments in breeding and exhibiting their cattle decorate the walls of the store.

The Association President

Active with Holstein USA for years as a member, board member, and now President, Gordie considers it an honor to serve the membership. He says he has met tremendous people from commercial producers to famous breeders and indus-try leaders. He signed the final agree-ment with the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding this fall after three previous presidents and the Association’s manage-ment had worked to negotiate the terms under which the Association provides type and pedigree data.

According to Gordie, the collection of data and new research have become more important than ever to recalibrate the genomic system. He emphasizes, “If we are going to continue to make real progress that dairymen can have confidence in we have to have this be accurate. Having said that, the Holstein breed has stayed great because of its di-versity, the different philosophies of our members, and their different breeding programs.

Gordie’s concern: “if we are not careful, we will lose the interest of many of our great breeders, people who have developed tremendous herds with great cattle whose pedigrees are filled with generations of Very Goods and Excel-lents, great components and high life time production yet have lost a great

deal of value in the marketplace due to lower genomic rankings.

He believes looking at what dairy-men want and need to be successful is as important as what science tells us. He believes that in some ways, genomic values seem similar to the index system in the 1980’s. But he explains the differ-ence is the confirmation of phenotypic data that makes genomics work. Without the phenotypic confirmation of data, this new tool loses all its accuracy. This tool through research can be tailored to find things that make a great cow or great bloodline.

Gordie says, “The Council on Dairy Cattle breeding is probably not going to be the one to search for the outcross pedigrees within our breed to recognize what commonality these great cattle have.” But he continues to feel that there is real value in the phenotypic expression that these cattle have… high type and high production are still important.

Gordie explains, “Genomics must be continuously refined and checked to make sure we are headed in the right direction and the results are as accurate as possible. Widespread phenotypic confirmation though classification and more accurate milk testing and parent-

age confirmations will make this a tool that can help dairymen reach the goals they want for their own operations.”

He asserts, “With genomics, as a tool, we can continue to breed the kind of cows we want because of the diversity genomics will give us. It’s a quick look at what should happen, but again it’s so extremely important that we maintain a con-tinual check on the phenotypic expression to make sure that a genomic expectation is actually realized.

Gordie believes: “One of the problems with genomics is that we are continuing to narrow our genetic base in that just a few pedigrees are now being recognized at the top versus broadening our base across more pedigrees. Using the cur-rent genomic sire lists, thankfully everybody doesn’t march to the same drummer and we will recognize families within our breed that continue to let us have the diversity we need.”

Gordie continues, saying genomics can be used to insure the Holstein breed develops even better cows in the future.

He concludes, “Inbreeding continues to be an issue that we need to watch so that we have diverse bloodlines to work from well into the future. More genetic diversity leads to more great individual animals to breed from. It’s simple… more and dif-ferent bloodlines means we need to look at more and different animals to find new and better traits.”

The Herd at Cook FarmThe Cook Farm herd currently has 130 Holsteins and Jer-

seys, over 60 milking cows with 24 Excellent. Their 210 acres are used for corn and grass. At one point 40 percent of the farm’s income came from marketing their live cattle and em-bryos and the other 60 percent from the sale of milk. The dairy store has helped offset the decrease in marketing genetics in the genomic era. Marketing now is only about 10 percent of the farm income.

The Cooks are still committed to a careful breeding pro-gram, with an increased effort to bring in some new genet-ics. World readers may remember a bull called Cook-Farm Starbuck Flip (EX-94). His dam was the Elevation Fayvor (5E EX-95) cow. She had nine Excellent and four Very Good daughters and at one point more than 85 percent of the herd went back to this tremendous brood cow. Cook-Farm Pronto Patty-ET (EX-95) out of Cook-Farm O-man Frigid-ET (VG-88) is the highest scored Fayvor on the farm.

Now, trying to keep the herd diversified and to find new lines to breed from it is down to one third that goes back to Fayvor. Still there are many high VG and EX descendants from her and her daughters. Other high scoring cows are RG-JK Shottle Marvel-ET EX 95 from Greenlea Rub Marlene-RED-ET (EX-94) and Hazels GLDWN Hannah-ET out of Quality-Ridge Stormi Hazel (EX-96), owned with C. Wolf & T. Whittier.

A new favorite young cow is Cook-Farm Uno Haize (VG-87) +2206 GTPI that goes back to Snow-N Denises Dellia (EX-95). She is an Uno out of Cook-Farm Domn Hazie-ET (EX-94) from Cookiecutter SH Hazel-ET (EX-92) who was

purchased as a calf. Uno Haize is the highest genomic milking cow in the herd. Gordie admits she’s not the highest GTPI cow in the world, but she is their kind of cow to breed from.

Cook Farm has over a 100 years of history because the Cook family knows the kind of cows they like and has the ability to adapt to the conditions in the industry. It’s really all about the family here. Generation after generation have made it work and made great cows along the way.

The New England juniors have had a very fun year, participating in many Holstein activities. Last summer, an excited group of Holstein youth were able to compete at the National Holstein Convention in St. Charles, Illinois. Four youth were a part of the senior dairy bowl team, and four were a part of the junior dairy bowl team. Two individuals also participated in dairy jeopardy, and two participated in the public speak-ing contest. Additionally, two youth entered tri-fold displays about Holstein related topics. The juniors were also very excited to receive first place on their hand made banner! Everyone had a great time compet-ing and touring Luck-E Holsteins, Lindale & Team Holsteins, and GEA Farm Technolo-gies. Also at the national convention, youth had the opportunity to attend the National Junior Hol-stein meeting, watch the National Holstein sale, and attend mixers with Holstein youth from all around the country.

Throughout the summer and fall, many Holstein youth also competed in local and regional junior Holstein shows all across New England. One large show that many youth attended was the Northeast Fall National at the Eastern States Exposi-tion, which had a very competitive junior show.

On Friday October 23, juniors from all around New England gathered for the 2015 New England Holstein junior meet-ing. The youth elected new officers to serve two years terms and discussed the upcoming year. The new officers include Madison Stevens as president, Maggie

Laprise as vice president, Erin Norris as secretary, and Kailey Foster as treasurer. Youth also competed in many different activities to try to qualify for the upcoming national conven-tion including dairy bowl, jeopardy, prepared public speaking, and the YDJM contest. The juniors also had the opportunity to visit some great farms during their time in Massachusetts. On Friday,

they visited Cook Farm to tour the facilities and for a chicken barbecue. On Sat-urday, the juniors were able to tour Barstow’s Longview Farm to see their manure digester and new robotic milk system. They also visited Mayval Farm to see their new cheese operation and Mary Montague’s art studio to see her paintings. At the
