President’s Message from the Guild’s Co-Presidents

David Levy and Barbara Russo [email protected] [email protected]

As this is the final Bulletin of the year, we believe it fitting to dedicate this message to a brief summation of the past twelve months. There are so many good things to report!

2019 saw a significant upgrade to our physical plant. Last year at this time we were still dealing with our old entry doors and waiting for the beginning of the fruits of our $60,000 Community Development Block Grant. Now we relish those automatic doors (stay to the left and wait for the doors to open). Additionally, our wheelchair accessible ramp and new back door make accessibility to the Guild easier for everyone.

Last year, we were concerned about a leaky roof; now we sport a new one as you can easily see. However, just as in our homes, less obvious items wear out and need replacement. We replaced our broken water pump. A new faucet was installed in the sink. We thank Duncan Culver for handling that chore. We had to replace our failing water heater. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Vince Matulewich and Duncan Culver for replacing that. Duncan also donated the funds to cover half of the cost! These tasks were handled by true Guild patriots, and we, as a membership, are grateful to them for volunteering their time and skill. Even though these projects are not easily visible, they are part of the upkeep of our facility, about which we must always be vigilant.

We continue to research grant opportunities to fund a newly graded and paved parking lot. Few granters include the physical plant as a category for grant applications. Regardless, we will continue to pursue funding for our much needed parking lot repairs.

Meanwhile, we are in the process of applying for a grant to reconfigure the studio to maximize working and storage space. We did over the course of the year manage to secure two other grants: One from Monmouth Arts for general operating costs, and one from the OceanFirst Foundation for our free docent program.

We have reached the milestone of 400+ members for the first time in several years. We continue to see more and more members and non-members taking advantage of our Semi Annual Portfolio Review. Approximately 20 artists have upgraded their membership status and with that, increased their exhibiting opportunities and other benefits. Portfolio Reviews occur in the spring and fall. Details appear on our website and in this online bulletin.

Two new groups have joined our free Docent program: Ladacin Network and Seabrook Village. Over the next few months, we will surely connect with local establishments, Sunrise and Chelsea assisted living facilities in Shrewsbury. Our groups recognize that with the proper guidance, the appreciation of art can be stimulating, enriching, and fun.

Our classes have continued to thrive. Check our schedule of classes in this bulletin. We have a wide range of talent on our faculty serving all ability levels in a wide variety of media. This year the Guild is hosting the Catalyst Art Academy. The brainchild of three Rumson- Fair Haven Art teachers (Kate Okeson, Kristen Lanfrank, and Amy Lepping), this initiative will bring a younger and different population to the Guild for in depth instruction. The Junior Catalyst Academy is for seven to twelve year olds. The Catalyst Academy teaches students ages thirteen and up. Perhaps that is another reason we received a “Best in Shrewsbury" award for Art Classes and Instruction.

Revenue from our classes, along with membership dues, provides the greatest percentage of income to the Guild. Dues expire on December 31, 2019. So, if you have not done so, renew your 2020 dues today.

Our exhibits continue to be outstanding. 2019 showcased some “jaw dropping” shows, and that will continue going forward. Browsers are constantly expressing amazement at the quality and the diversity displayed. The Guild has proven, beyond a doubt, that it is a home for some very talented, imaginative, and immensely skilled artists.

Our Annual Meeting for all Guild members is scheduled for December 8th at 2:30 here at the Guild. That will be followed by our Holiday Party, All Member’s Exhibit, and displays of art and fine crafts for cash and carry sales, a great opportunity for buying gifts. Mark your calendar because you do not want to miss this event.

All in all, 2019 was a very satisfying and productive year for the Guild. We want to thank our members, our volunteers, our Board, and our staff for their contribution to making us a premier arts organization, and to continue our mission: To advance excellence in the Visual Arts.

A happy and healthy Thanksgiving to you all!

Guild of Creative Art Class Descriptions

Watercolor – Beginner through Advanced with Randy Mayer Randy’s Watercolor painting class is structured so that

students will learn the fundamental techniques and properties of the medium, to achieve a successful painting. Students will be working from photographs and/or still life subjects. Classes will begin with a short demonstration, followed by time for students to work on their paintings. There will also be a “Paint Along” available, showing step by step painting, for the students who are more comfortable learning in this way. Instruction will be personalized to suit individual needs and interests, and because classes are limited to only 8 students, each student will receive one on one time.

Drawing – Beginner through Advanced with Randy Mayer Beneath every great piece of art is a great drawing. Randy’s

drawing class will be structured to give you the fundamentals necessary to improve your skills and do your own “great drawing”. Whether you would like to be able to do a “vacation sketch”, a drawing for a painting or one to stand on its own, this is the class for you.

Mastering the Media of the Masters, Oil Painting with Sven Widen This class is a studio course in oil painting for

adults and students age twelve and older. Students will learn techniques, materials and substrates of classical, Old Masters, and contemporary oil painting, and will work from still life set ups, although working from a photo reference will be accommodated and used to its greatest benefit. The prime goal of this class is for the students to have a hands-on understanding and familiarity with the media, ultimately to find their own style and voice. Sven teaches watercolor and acrylics as well.

Guild Photographer’s Group This workshop will meet the second Tuesday of each month. Each meeting will explore a different

theme. This workshop is an interactive discussion and critique. Tuition is FREE to Guild members, $5.00 per session to non-members.

Oil Painting Landscapes and Still Life with Pratima Rao In this class on oil painting, students will learn to paint a

successful landscape or still life with oils in the studio. Understanding key concepts of oil painting such as composition and design, effects of light, color value and temperature, lost and found edges, as well as linear and atmospheric perspectives will be addressed. Students can use their plein air study and/or reference photographs to paint a landscape, seascape or still life of their choice.

Beginning Drawing with Karen Dooney Ever want to learn to draw or haven't drawn in years? This course will cover the

fundamentals of drawing including shading, composition and line. Behind many great works of art, abstraction or realism lays a strong drawing. No experience necessary. Open to adults and teens.

Pastel Impressionism with Karen Dooney Gain basic skills in two-dimensional artwork with pastels, a flexible opaque medium

that allows layering and building of color, much like oil paint. Class will focus on composition, negative shapes, and other fundamentals for beginners using colored photographs and still lives. All levels are welcome.

Drawing and Painting for Children, Teens, and Adults with Leslie Backlund Individual attention is given to

students of all levels and interests. Students learn drawing, composition and color theory while working on their own choice of subject matter. Leslie also offers a Portfolio Review class for teenagers who are preparing to be art majors in college and portfolio prep classes for young teens applying for high school art programs.

Framing Your Artwork Yourself with Hillary Binder-Klein The first session of this framing course covers the basics of

framing. The second class concentrates on the hinging technique of matting, and completing the framing process by wiring the piece correctly. Students will mat, frame and wire one of their own pieces.

Lyrical Abstract Expressionism with James Kent Lyrical Abstract Expressionism painting class begins its 22nd year in the fall

of 2019. This class teaches the non-representational, non-objective abstract expressionist painting style as pioneered by artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, James Brooks, Franz Kline, and others. Paintings are started with no preconceptions, with an emphasis on editing as the most important part of the process. Students work in acrylics. Painting time and a group critique is offered . (THIS CLASS IS NOT TAKING NEW STUDENTS AT THIS TIME)

Catalyst and Junior Catalyst Academy with Kristen Lanfrank, Amy Lepping, and Kate Okeson The Catalyst Academy provides individual and contemporary art instruction to help motivated, creative, and innovative students advance their personal art practice through intensive studio art training. The Academy is designed to enhance the student’s fine art portfolio, and develop a supplemental portfolio for the competitive college application process. Admission is by portfolio review. The Junior Academy enrolls students ages 7 through 12, while the Academy is for students age 13 and up. Email [email protected] for information.

The Guild of Creative Art has been

selected by the Shrewsbury Award Program for the 2019 Best of Shrewsbury Award in the Art School category.

Each year, the Shrewsbury Award Program identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and our community. These exceptional companies help make the Shrewsbury area a great place to live, work and play.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2019 Shrewsbury Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Shrewsbury Award Program and data provided by third parties.

The Guild offers art classes for children, teens, high school and college students, and adults in a variety of mediums. Classes and workshops are offered for students of all ability levels from the raw beginner to the accomplished artist. Click HERE to see the schedule.

The Guild also provides an extensive community outreach program. As part of its commitment to the community, the Guild offers docent tours in its gallery at no cost to groups throughout the Shrewsbury area and beyond.

Additionally, the Guild hosts monthly exhibits of fine artwork in various disciplines from both local and regional artists. These exhibits, as well as their opening receptions, are open to the public and admission free.
