MEMORANDUM
TO Office of Graduate Studies
SUBJECT Mat Durden Qualifications
As you will see from the attached curriculum vita Dr Duerden is fully qualified to assist graduate students in our department through service on supervisory committees and to teach graduate classes in recreation and youth leadership He has published 10 papers in scientific and influential journals in parks recreation and youth development in the last two years An additional four papers are in review This rate of publication exceeds that of other assistant professors on our faculty who have been awarded graduate faculty status following their appointments
Dr Duerden also has unique professional experience in both youth leadership and in commercialentrepreneurial recreation This experience is an asset unlike that of any other member of our faculty It positions him well to assist graduate students with logistical details of field research that are related to the real world work environment Dr Duerden also has significant teaching experience having taught six undergraduate classes I would not hesitate to ask him to teach a graduate class if the circumstances become appropriate to such an appointment Finally Dr Duerden serves in significant leadership positions in the youth development community (ie Texas Partnership for Out-of-School Time Board Member Journey Foundation Board Member) These leadership roles will afford Dr Duerden opportunity to help students connect with leading professionals and key youth-serving agencies for their thesis and dissertation research

Dr Duerden has received significant honors for his many contributions Among these are the Bradberry Scholarship Recipient and Graduate Merit
Fellowship He was recognized as the outstanding graduate student in Utah in 2006
I am perplexed as to why a question about Dr Duerdens eligibility is being raised My understanding is that appointment of TAMU assistant professors is routine I trust that the concern is not a result of Dr Duerdens status as an AgriLife Extension Service faculty member As you may know Texas AampM
University recently endorsed a white paper on scholarly engagement that is based on the extension model Like extension scholarly engagement involves collaborating with professionals and community leaders to solve problems pursue opportunities and elevate quality of life through teaching research and service I suspect that one reason that Texas AampM University is a target of disproportionate budget reductions is a history of failure to adequately and visibly address local regional and state needs In the spirit of that white paper I certainly hope that the future of our universitys service to graduate students includes increasing numbers of assistant professors like Dr Duerden
