community. It requires all of us—and teamwork. The Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce has remained among the St. Louis Business Journal’s top five chambers for five years. It is the largest chamber in St. Louis County. We should be proud of what we have achieved. In 2016, we celebrated our 40th anniversary. This year, another milestone: the 30th anniversary of our free summer concert series at Faust Park (with 10 out of 10 concerts performed—no rain-outs!). We had a record number of sponsors and our fireworks were underwritten through the generosity of the Chamber members and JM Displays. We thought we were going to have to do without. But as a community, we made it happen. We are well into a busy time of year, filled with serving our businesses and creating opportunities to connect. We had our Third Annual Leadership Conference in September. The new Leadership Chesterfield Class has formed, heading to a May graduation where they’ll join more than 280 alumni of the program. We have a new fall golf tournament Oct. 16, our 16th Annual Gumbo Flats Pumpkin Run Oct. 21—benefiting Wings of Hope, which has welcomed Bret Heinrich, its new CEO and president—and our Winter Festival at the St. Louis Carousel House on Dec. 1. Be sure to check this edition’s Chamber Events page for details. Finally, we have a host of newer networking events focusing on our Chesterfield Young Professionals and our Connecting Chesterfield Women, with outings like a visit to the CycleBar in November, the Escape Room in January, and Orange Theory Fitness, Dierbergs’ cooking class, A|R Workshop, AmpedUp, and Pinot’s Palette in the near future. Look on page 18 and 19 for the details and be sure to register! It’s about connecting. We’re building community. And it happens with teamwork.

It Takes a TeamHow the power of teamwork helps the Chamber make connections and build community.

Now that we’re well into the fall season, I’m happy to be back into the routine: Back to school, the team sports, festivals, holidays

and the overall feeling of family, friendships and teamwork. That feeling is evident at the Chamber office, where you can call and get any member of our wonderful team—Amanda, Carly, Joan or myself—to be a resource and hear your ideas. This time of year makes me a bit nostalgic, too: Five years ago, on Oct. 15, I started as executive director at the Chamber, leaving corporate America for the nonprofit world, building this organization into what it is now and spearheading its mission to “help the community connect, learn and grow.” And the way to achieve this vision is through the members, board, staff, volunteers, and

We heard loud and clear that networking and business promotion opportunities were among the most important benefits the Chamber provides

for its membership. In response we scheduled one additional business promotion event with our fall business EXPO in September and additional networking events, the fall golf tournament in October, Connecting Chamber Women (CCW) events in October and

November, and additional Chesterfield Young Professional (CYP) events in October, November and December. Check out the events on page 18 and 19 and call the Chamber to register. We hosted our first ever “speed networking general membership meeting” and the testimonials were amazing. Connections were made with members who have gone to general membership meetings regularly and never met others. The event was a success. We plan to organize similar events in the future. You’ll also find in this edition of Out & About that current Chamber membership events—particularly networking, business promotion events and other Chamber major events are better highlighted. We encourage the Chamber members and the community to attend as many events as

Since the SurveyA taste of some of the initiatives begun since the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce surveyed members about their needs.

I reported in the last edition of Out & About magazine on the results of our membership survey, where we heard from nearly 100 Chamber

members about how we were doing in a range of areas. The survey helped us focus some of our initia-tives in areas that we saw were most important to the membership.

possible. If you’re a regular reader of Out & About magazine, you’ve probably also noticed that we’ve been running the full Chamber membership directory in every edition of the magazine—starting with the first quarter edition in 2017. In publishing the directory every issue we hope that gives our readers an easy way to identify the businesses in the community who support the Chamber with their membership. Did you know that the Out & About reaches over 26,893 households and businesses in 63005 and 63017? Every business and residence in Chesterfield receives our publication by direct mail, yet another form of business promotion we have initiated. Watch for more exciting programs as we continue to implement new initiatives in response to our survey. All this, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of Chamber members.

students at Marquette High School started the school year with a new addition that features labs and classrooms focused on STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Rockwood voters approved the construction in a 2015 bond issue. According to Principal Dr. Greg Mathison, the addition is giving students access to state-of-the-art resources and technology. “The new STEM classrooms provide space that allows for an inquiry-based model of instruction,” he said. “This includes more critical thinking, research and problem solving.” The addition expands areas for advanced placement and honors biology, as well as honors chemistry. “Our teachers are now able to meet the Next Generation Science Standards and

use more exploratory methods in their instruction,” Mathison said. “The STEM labs and classrooms are conducive to lessons in which the students become the scientists. They are able to explore the material in deeper, more meaningful ways.” Rockwood curriculum is on board with these advancements. A new AMPED class allows students to learn algebra, along with manufacturing, process, entrepreneurship and design, as they develop their own textile business. “It’s not teaching math in isolation,” Mathison said. “When students apply learning to a real-world experience, it enhances their knowledge. They get a deeper understanding of algebra in a real-world application of a business.” Rockwood Superintendent Dr. Eric Knost said the addition at Marquette is part of planned innovation in the district. All four Rockwood high schools are in various stages of expanding or renovating STEM facilities, and all elementary schools are designing and using their own innovative learning spaces. Middle schools have completed the launch of a 1-to-1 technology program this year. “It’s a matter of preparing these young people for their futures,” said Knost. “Innovative learning environments are necessary as we prepare kids to live and thrive in the 21st century.” With almost 18,000 square feet, the $5 million addition at Marquette provides nine new classrooms. It’s a growing, vibrant school community with almost 2,300 students. “The STEM expansion is a beautiful facility that will enhance learning for our students,” Mathison said. “I want to thank Rockwood community members for their continued support of our students.” Marquette High School teachers and staff are committed to serving students, families and community. In April 2017, U.S. News & World Report recognized Marquette High School on its “America’s Best High Schools” list and The Washington Post recently recognized Marquette as one of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.”

Chesterfield’s ‘Stonehenge’A discovery in the Chesterfield Valley connects several ancient man-made geological features, miles apart, giving a glimpse at the culture that flourished a thousand years ago in the area.By Mark Leach

Did you know Chesterfield has its own ancient celestial calendar akin to the more famous one in England?

But unlike England’s Stonehenge, Chesterfield’s celestial calendar consisted not of stones, but rather of a sacred cave, two earthen pyramids, a temple, and mortuary building. Also, unlike England’s ancient calendar, which measures approximately 100 meters in diameter, Chesterfield’s stretched 3.56 miles across the entire Missouri River valley. Archaeologists have long known about the cave and earthen pyramids. But it wasn’t until the discovery of a lost 1,000-year-old city—perfectly sealed under 6 feet of flood-deposited soil in the Chesterfield Valley—that the pieces of this enormous calendar began to fall into place. In 2009, archaeologist Joseph Harl, of the Archaeological Research Center of St. Louis, led excavations of the Dampier site: a massive civic, market, and ceremonial complex with strong ties to the powerful pyramided capital city that stretched from St. Louis, through East St. Louis, and on to the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site.

Among the numerous buildings discovered at the site were a large L-shaped temple and mortuary building. As Harl stood outside the remains of the temple’s doorway, he found himself gazing first toward the Chesterfield bluff line and then turning his head, looking far across the river to the top of the opposite bluffs. Along the Chesterfield bluffs, he had previously excavated an enormous village and mortuary complex adjacent to the largest surviving earthen pyramid in St. Louis County. This pyramid, named Blake Mound, was constructed directly above a cave, which is located below at the base of the limestone bluff. From his work mapping earthen pyramids along the lower Missouri River, Harl knew about the location of another pyramid atop the bluffs on the opposite side of the river. Knowing that the culture that flourished in the St. Louis area often designed celestial alignments into their civic planning, Harl had a strong hunch there might be something special about the layout of the temple and the two pyramids. Further research more than confirmed his suspicions. The most obvious alignment was the construction of Blake Mound—8 million pounds of hand-dug and hauled material—directly above the cave. This shrine served as a physical representation of these peoples’ world view: the pyramid reaching upward into the heavens, a mortuary complex in the world of the living, and the cave serving as an entrance into the underworld. When viewed from the L-shaped temple’s entrance, the sun appears to rise directly out of Blake Mound during the winter solstice dawn and out from behind the mortuary building across the village at dawn of the summer solstice. To learn more about this and other sites, the book Chesterfield’s Ancient Past is available at Chesterfield City Hall and at Amazon.

Tax Help for Disaster ReliefHow you can help employees help victims of major hurricanes.By Doug Mueller

Since Hurricane Harvey and Tropical Storm Harvey, the IRS has announced IRS Notice 2017-48, giving employees the option to

designate part of their vacation or personal time off leave to Internal Revenue Code Section 170(c), charitable organizations to aid victims. Shortly following the release of the notice, Hurricane Irma and Tropical Storm Irma hit. The IRS responded by announcing IRS Notice 2017-52, extending the leave-based donation program to organizations that aid Irma victims. The employee may forego this paid vacation, leave, or sick pay by instead instructing the employer to make contributions to charitable organizations that provide relief for the victims of Harvey and Irma, before Jan. 1, 2019. There are no payroll taxes, unemployment taxes, withholding, or unemployment charges with respect to any of this amount. The employee will not receive a charitable contribution for this, but is merely foregoing the revenue. The employer will be able to deduct this expense, not as a charitable contribution, but as a regular business expense. As a result, the employer does not have to worry about charitable contribution limits. Some employer organizations have a “use it or lose it” policy on these types of leave. Therefore, some employees might be inclined to look at situations where they could be wasting leave opportunities and instead choose to exchange their leave in this regard for aid to these types of victims. Employees: Check with your employer to see if they will cooperate with the IRS guidelines and allow you to participate in this program. Employers: If you have questions regarding implementation or tax consequences, be sure to consult with your CPA.

Float Away Your TroublesA sensory-free getaway at Buoyant Float Spa Mikell Rush says business lets customers get away without going away. She’s the owner of Buoyant Float Spa at 703 Long Road Crossing Drive, Suite 7, Chesterfield, as well as another location in Rock Hill. “Buoyant Float Spa is an upscale atmosphere that offers 60 minutes of floatation therapy, a place where you go to float effortlessly in 200 gallons of skin-temperature water with 1,000 pounds of medical grade Epsom salt,” she said. “Buoyant is a sensory-free environment that eliminates your senses of feeling, sight, sound and smell, allowing our minds and bodies to disconnect from the external stimuli we encounter daily.” Anyone can use floating for many different reasons such as to address sleep disorder, stress, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as for meditation, muscle recovery from rheumatoid arthritis, joint recovery, problem solving, pregnancy pain relief and other pain management. “Buoyant Float Spa pods are the only pods in the market that empty out between each floater, ensuring that every drop of water was filtered and sanitized, while allowing us to sanitize the inside of the pod,” Rush said. The Great EscapeFind clues with partners at Gateway Escape Rooms Tim McNabb has an unusual title: He’s the “puzzlemaster.” At Gateway Escape Rooms, behind 150 Concord Plaza in South County, McNabb “offers a wonderful indoor activity to have fun with friends, family and colleagues as you work together to solve and escape a room.” And you have 60 minutes. You search a room for clues, manipulate objects and collaborate with teammates to solve puzzles using those clues, and, with luck and wit, escape. “We offer three scenarios: Murder in the Man Cave, Out of the Box and Art Gallery Heist,” McNabb said. Murder in the Man Cave is a dual room, so two teams of nine or 10 people can go head to head at the same time. Other rooms manage nine players.Escape rooms have been carefully designed and tested to be both challenging and interesting to everyone, McNabb said. “Every challenge can be solved with simple logic and close observation or things there in the room,” he said. “We make sure there is something for everyone to do in our escape rooms, no matter what their skills.” The rooms are great for a team-building event, as well, since the collaboration and problem-solving skills needed in an escape room are those that businesses want to promote, he said. Great Food, Drinks and CompanyGoodies from Charlie Gitto’s From the Hill Great food, wine and service can take the chill out of bad weather. Charlie Gitto Jr., president of Charlie Gitto’s From the Hill restaurant, at 15525 Olive Blvd., Chesterfield, said many customers are attracted to the happy hour every day from 4-6 p.m., “which includes some of our favorite dishes, creative features and seasonal drinks, along with some of the classics like our five-berry cosmopolitan.” Fresh features are created nightly by the chefs and incorporate seasonal flavors and products, he said. The restaurant also is a great place for hosting parties; a private room can accommodate up to 50 people, Gitto said, adding it’s important to book a holiday party early. “Something that makes us different is that everything is made from scratch and in house,” he said. “All the bread, pasta and desserts come from our bakery.” Customers can keep an eye out for seasonal desserts for the holidays. New Store Every DayUpscale decor at Cocoon Home Consignment Donna Andrews and Christine Neskar, co-owners of Cocoon Home Consignment said their store was “born out of a dream, passion and support from friends and family.”

After its a grand-opening on Sept. 9 at 103 Chesterfield Valley Drive, Chesterfield, the upscale furniture, home décor and gift boutique “is a ‘new’ store every time you come in, so people should stop in often and browse our new items, or, if they’re “cocooning” at home, they can shop our store 24 hours a day on e-commerce,” Neskar said. Andrews said the furniture and most of the décor is consigned by local residents and retail

vendors, so it is a mix of new and like-new furniture and home décor. “We also carry a wide variety of great gifts like soy candles, natural soaps and body butters, coffee, chocolates from a well-known Chicago chocolatier, greeting cards and more,” she said. Some consignors are local artisans, so the store has hand-crafted jewelry, pillows and florals as well, Andrews said. “We want to help everyone who walks in the door feel at home and inspire them to transform their own homes,” Neskar said. “We love talking to our customers and helping them find special treasures.” For more information on the business, call 636-778-0090 or visit the website cocoonconsignment.com.

So it made sense to start a restaurant which offered healthy food after a healthy ride.” Devonshire acknowledged the couple was taking a huge risk when they started the first restaurant, “but it’s paid off wonderfully, and we’ve almost doubled our business size every year.” “There are challenges and learning curves when dealing with growth, but it’s been rewarding and a very exciting challenge.” While the St. Charles

Jodi Devonshire and Tony Caruso have carved themselves a humble niche by serving cycling enthusiasts with great food. Their latest café caters to shoppers and cyclists at the Taubman Prestige Outlets.

Many cyclists have ridden through Taubman Prestige Outlets, but until

July 11, there was no place for them to stop for a healthy bite to eat. That changed with the grand opening of the Bike Stop Café at 1708 South Outer 40 Road, Suite 140.

excited to have a stopping place on their rides, especially the longer ones,” she said. Devonshire said there are different favorite menu items at the St. Charles and Chesterfield cafes. For example, the “Lewis & Clark,” a feta and spinach healthy light wrap, is more popular in St. Charles. But in Chesterfield, the couple sells more “build your

own quesadillas” and homemade baked items. “In both places, our No. 1 seller is the vegan zucchini muffins,” she said. “What makes our bakery unique is that we have vegan and gluten free items.”Most sandwiches cost between $7 and $9, while pastry items range from $1.50 to $3.50. The café in Chesterfield is much bigger than the one in St. Charles. It allows that café to host large groups and meetings. Devonshire said merchants from the mall have weekly and monthly meetings as do businesses there. The Chesterfield and St. Charles cafés offer bike rentals for $8 an hour for a regular bike or $15 an hour for pedal-assist bikes. Also in the Chesterfield café, gifts are available for the cycling enthusiast, such as mugs, steins, socks and more. From the beginning, the operation has centered on the couple’s family, with Devonshire’s brother, sister and three children on the payroll. “Over the years,

location—located on the 237-mile Katy Trail—offers the café, as well as bike service, repairs, rentals and sales and a shuttle service to the trail, the Chesterfield site offers the cafe and bike rentals. Since 2015, the couple has also operated a Bike Stop Outpost, which offers gifts and gear in St. Charles at 610 S. Main St. “The Monarch levee trail in Chesterfield was built about four years ago and, in January, it was connected to the Katy Trail,” she said. Taubman representatives approached the couple to ask if they’d be interested in opening a café in the space previously occupied by Nadoz Bakery Café, near the mall’s food court. “We were able to connect our two stores,” Devonshire said. “They’re 18 miles apart by trail.”The location has been in a hit with cyclists, many of who rode by and parked at the outlet mall—but had no great place to eat and congregate. “Many of our regulars are from Chesterfield and are super

encountered 14½ people (one was a baby in a stroller) on my walk—but most were either leaving or

awaiting a MetroBus.

A fair challenge. If you like to walk to get in

shape, you’ll probably enjoy this. You probably don’t notice the slight inclines as you race around the Parkway in a car. But they’re enough to boost your heart rate as you stride the inclines south of the mall or on

the north side of the loop.

Easy intersections. I counted 12

intersections on the route. With one exception, they had pedestrian-friendly traffic

8 observations about the walkable Chesterfield Parkway, where sidewalks and crossing signals make the 3.3-mile route fully foot friendly with the opening of a pedestrian bridge.

8 With the opening of a new $1.84 million pedestrian bridge—and accompanying sidewalk extension just south of Interstate 64—Chesterfield Parkway is now fully foot friendly. Since the pedestrian bridge opened in August at Chesterfield Parkway East, the entire 3.3-mile route has paved sidewalks and signal crosswalks at every intersection. The new bridge and sidewalks are another link in the chain toward a more walkable city of Chesterfield, a goal city officials said was high on their list, according to our January 2017 article in Out & About magazine. Eager to test out the route, and enticed by bright sunshine and a spectacular snap in the early fall air after Labor Day, I put on my walking shoes and strode

the course. I started and ended on the east side of the Parkway at the intersection with Swingley Ridge Road, heading south toward the interstate. Here are eight observations about the route.

It’s an easy jaunt. At just over 3 miles, the

average walker can make the loop in just under

an hour. I started at 4:54 p.m. on Sept. 5 and finished 68 minutes later—but I was stopping to jot notes and take pictures along the way. A focused walker should beat my time easily.

You’ll be lonely. Bring a friend on your trek

because you’re not likely to find much company out there. I

signals to

make the walking easy.

I spent the entire walk on the inside of the

circle (there aren’t sidewalks over the interstate on the outside at Chesterfield Parkway East). On that side of the Parkway, the crossing at Olive Boulevard wasn’t particularly friendly. To get the benefit of a crossing signal, I’d have had to cross the Parkway to the corner with Charlie Gitto’s From the Hill, cross east over Olive, and cross south again to the BP filling station to resume my route.

Changing scenery. It’s actually a lovely little stroll. Although traffic

was heavy during my rush-hour walk, I got a lovely

variety of scenery around the loop—from wild daisies on the south side, to the pastoral early development west of the Chesterfield Mall, to the well-manicured landscapes at Chesterfield Village, to the bustling commercial development on either side of Olive.

Getting there. Unfortunately, there’s

no easy access by foot to the Parkway, unless

you live in the apartments near Schoettler Valley Drive and Clarkson Road, or the Chesterfield Village Apartments on the north side of the loop. I parked my car in a business lot on Swingley Ridge so I could make the walk.

Community garden. This might be an option for those looking to park

and walk. Sachs Properties has sponsored a community garden on the south side of the loop, just west of Bishop’s Post restaurant. I saw someone leaving the garden as I walked by; there was ample parking.

Don’t forget our members. You’ll encounter a number

of Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce members on or near the route. Stop and give them a shout-out—or at least remember them on your way. They include Charlie Gitto’s, Scarecrow, the Chesterfield Mall, the St. Louis County Library-Sachs Branch, Chesterfield City Hall, the Chesterfield Family YMCA, Bishop’s Post, Sachs Properties, Pfizer, Monsanto, Chesterfield Village Apartments and Stages St. Louis, to name a few.

125 Years of Faith and Service

30 Out & About | October-December 2017 @chesterfieldmochamber @ChesterfieldCOC

T he membership of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Chesterfield—including many multi-ple generations of West County families—has

not only shaped the church over 125 years, but also the community at large. Families such as the Rombachs, Eberweins, Sellenrieks, Dierbergs, Autenrieths, Queathems, Stemmes, Prestiens, Hill’s, Albrechts, Seegers, Hoefers, and Yokels have made the church and the Chesterfield area strong. Having celebrated its anniversary in September, the church at 15370 Olive Blvd., just east of Chesterfield Mall, continues its efforts to serve its members and its neighbors. It’s headed by interim Pastor Bill Smutz, who has been in that post a couple of years. A historical sketch of the church notes that the first worship service in the then small farming community, at the time, called Bellefontaine was held Jan. 21, 1892, and the church was first called Bellefontaine German Evangelical Church. It notes worship services were then held in the Henry Sahm Hall on Olive Street Road. That site served as the church’s place of worship for about 17 months. After that, the church began using a log home for its services. It was officially organized in August of that year under the leadership of Rev. Theodore Uhdau, who served until 1900. The current location of the church was decided when Gottlieb Albrecht offered three acres of his property for $500 and provided $200 for the first church building there. A parsonage was built around 1900. In 1912, two more acres were purchased from Albrecht for a cemetery. The first church building was dedicated in October 1893. While the church was under construction, member Jacob Hoefer solicited funds for an organ, bell, altar and pulpit coverings. That bell is now in the tower of the present church. Over the intervening decades, a series of expansions and renovations culminated in dedicating the current church home in November

1962. Later, the German Evangelical Church merged with the Reformed church to become the Evangelical and Reformed Church, which subsequently merged with the Congregational Christian Church in 1957 to form the United Church of Christ. Leitha Autenrieth Macalady, 87, of Chesterfield, was baptized in the church and has been a member her entire life. Over those years, she’s served as Sunday school teacher, women’s group member, youth group member and choir member. She’s helped with Vacation Bible School and numerous parish meals. “It’s such a wonderful thing to be involved in your faith. It’s a comfort,” she said. “At St. John’s, people are so welcoming of everybody, and we feel like a family.” The church is involved with other community organizations such Circle of Concern scouting.Carol Puellmann Castillon, 80, of Chesterfield, has been a St. John’s church member from the cradle. “It’s a small, very welcoming congregation, so everybody knows most of the people,” said Castillon, who started teaching Sunday school at age 13. She also pitched on a church softball team for girls and boys, taught Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, and helped teach confirmation class. A lot has changed over the years. “I remember going when Olive was only two lanes wide,” Castillon said. “For the men’s fellowship, they’d play softball or baseball and ride around the bases on rented donkeys in the 1940s.” The church also just renovated its basement after it was flooded with 4 inches of water last year. She praised a youth fellowship group that meets once a month. Adult Bible study also is offered. “Our church helps with missions such as Habitat for Humanity, Circle of Concern, Every Child’s Hope, and the Lydia’s House women’s shelter,” she said. Also baptized into the church, Barbara Albrecht Dauster, 82, of Chesterfield, calls it “just

home for me.” She’s sung in the choir, worked with Sunday school classes, and is now in a quilting group, among other activities. “It’s mostly the people I enjoy. They come from Chesterfield, Ellisville, Creve Coeur, Maryland Heights, Wildwood, and all over West County,” she said. “Our cemetery reflects the names of many with long-time connections to West County, original Chesterfield families.” Lifelong member Lee Ann Aldrich Difani, 60, of Creve Coeur, calls St. John’s a “very welcoming, friendly church, where we enjoy multi-generational activities.” She’s attended Sunday school, been part of youth fellowship, sang in the choir, organized the former church rummage sale and now plays in the hand bell choir and participates in a midweek youth program called LOGOS. Today, the church’s facilities include a sanctuary that seats more than 350, a large fellowship hall, gymnasium, several meeting and conference rooms, and numerous classrooms to accommodate the Sunday school and pre-school activities. The St. John’s Early Childhood Center provides a Christian environment for young children. Some church facilities are available for community rentals. A Legacy of LuxurySt. Louis resident—and Carter’s team at Mary Tuttle’s and the nearby Amelia’s store have worked to make the transition seamless. She continues to lead the store forward with Mary’s husband Howard. Carter has fond memories of working with her mother since childhood at Mary’s first location, which opened in 1984 in the Lamp & Lantern shopping center in Town & Country. In her 20s, she helped deliver flowers, set up weddings and even soothed a nervous young bride or two. It’s the people aspect of the business that Carter loves, she said—helping them choose flowers, the perfect gift or maybe just a little treat for themselves. She is as knowledgeable of the store’s many product lines as she is of its loyal clientele. The store moved to its current location 17 years ago. “When the Chesterfield Grove Market was

Chesterfield’s vibrant retail community on Baxter Road. Carter is manager of Mary Tuttle’s Floral & Gifts at 17021 Baxter Road. Her stepfather, Howard Gallow, is president. She said the unique store—located in the West County area for more than 30 years—offers everything from a simple corsage to the trappings of a lavish wedding, as well as lovely accessories, both personal and for the home. “Mary’s vision for beauty and quality has always been the go-to standard for ease and elegance,” Carter said. being built, Mom felt it was a good time to make a move and be part of a center filled exclusively with locally owned businesses,” Carter said. They collaborated on the buying aspects of the store, which carries home accessories, several lines of fine crystal and glassware, tableware, baby gifts, jewelry and more in addition to floral products, both fresh and silk. “We have great offerings from Juliska, Match, Vietri, Lampe Berger, Sid Dickens, Julie Vos, Little Giraffe, and Kissy Kissy, just to name a few,” Carter said adding the store offers delivery service, gift wrapping and bridal registry, aware that personal service is their hallmark. “We carry a lot of unique lines of high-end lifestyle items,” Carter said. “Our tag line is ‘Mary Tuttle’s The Art of Living.’” Carter has deep roots in West St. Louis County. Though born in Sedalia, she moved to the St. Louis area as a baby and graduated in 1986 from Rockwood’s Lafayette High School, while living in Ballwin for many years with her parents.‘Mom and I always collaborated,” Carter said. “She’s with me in spirit, and we are keeping her vision going.”

Carter’s work has been gearing up even more in the last 10 years. In 2007, just two doors down from Mary Tuttle’s, she and her mom launched Amelia’s Fine Linens. Mary Tuttle’s had carried luxury bedding, linens, home fragrances and sleepwear for years, but that aspect of the business took on a life of its own, said Carter, manager of that store at 17041 Baxter Road. “It needed its own unique setting,” she said. Both stores show the same attention to detail, quality and taste their customers have come to know. Amelia’s carries a selection for home and bath, including SFERRA, Matouk, SDH, Bella Notte, and kai (an Oprah Winfrey favorite). “Carrying on Mom’s legacy is a big responsibility, but with our great staff, we will keep her vision of great quality, service and selection going.” Carter said. “We also try to promote shopping locally and keeping dollars in our own community.”

Contact Mary Tuttle’s Floral & Gifts at 636-728-0480 or online at marytuttlesflowers.com and marytuttles.com. Contact Amelia’s at 636-728-0455 or amelias.com.
