OLQP MISSION STATEMENT
Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedicat-ed to
witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, espe-cially the Gospel of
Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the
spirit and to en-courage the potential of those we serve through
liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social
ministries. The parish will continue to identify with its origin as
a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to
promote racial harmo-ny and social justice. While our primary focus
is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for
the well-being of the downtrodden everywhere. In this we strive for
our parish commu-nity to be a caring, sharing, and loving
family.

immediately before receiving Communion. Please bring your

IT’S THE OLQP 75th ANNIVERSARY FURNITURE & FLY AWAY
RAFFLE!
Starting Monday, December 14th, we will be raffling off end
tables (multiple designs available) and bookcases made from the
church pews that were removed during the renovation – You could win
a piece of OLQP history of your very own! We are also raffling off
four pairs of JetBlue® plane tickets to anywhere they fly. Tickets
may be used between 03/01/2020 and 03/01/2021. Please note that
upon booking a credit card will be required for taxes and fees. All
proceeds benefit OLQP Covid-19 Relief Services.

A MESSAGE FROM THE OLQP KNITTERS -- We wish you a safe, merry
Christmas and healthy (COVID-free) New
Year! Our distribution for 2020 is now done. Remarkably, our
knitters and crocheters created 422 scarves and 127 hats for
OLQP Food Pantry and Matthew 25 families, SEEC, Doorways
for Women and Children, and Christmas Eve distribution to
homeless men and women at Farragut Square in DC. We also
supported several other OLQP ministries: Building Forever
Families Comfort Cases project, Project Gabriel, Baptism
Minis-
try and Visitation Ministry. Our total this year is a
remarkable:
676 pieces made by 50 talented and giving volunteers! Work
very well done and very much appreciated!!
To Our Donors – thank you for your generosity each year, we
rely on you! Please save yarn, smallish paper shopping bags
with handles (Starbuck size works well), tissue paper (new
or
gently used) and gallon ziplock plastic bags. Please leave
dona-
tions in the basket outside the food pantry in Father Ray Hall
or
hold donations until we are safely back in church. If you

topic of Testifying. There is no time requirement for your
reflection and no virtual meeting to join. Wherever you are,

SANDY HOOK ANNIVERSARY, DECEMBER 14
A coalition of mostly faith-based organizations will conduct the
8th Annual National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence on
Monday, December 14, on Facebook Live, for the entire day. The date
marks the 8-year anniversary of the shootings at Sandy Hook
Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, when a 20-year-old
gunman shot and killed 20 children be-tween 6 and 7 years old and
six adult school staff mem-bers. The national vigil has been held
each year since then, but always as a largely in-person event in
Washington until this year. This year’s event will consist of a
livestreamed vid-eo of submitted photos of lost loved ones. You are
invited to share a photograph of a loved one whose life was
tragically ended by an act of gun violence to be included in the
vid-eo. For more information, visit bradyunited.org. Also on
December 14th, and on the 14th of every month, you are invited to
join fellow parishioners who are members of OLQP’s Gun Violence
Prevention Ministry and others who will be participating in a vigil
supporting gun violence preven-tion in front of the headquarters of
the National Rifle Associ-ation (11250 Waples Mill Rd. in Fairfax
County). Vigils are held from 10 to 11am if the 14th of the month
is any day but Sunday. If Sunday, the vigil is held from 2 to
3pm.
MATEO 25 – Cerrado durante los días festivos La tienda estará

ANIVERSARIO DE SANDY HOOK, EL 14 DE DICIEMBRE
Una coalición de organizaciones, mayormente religiosas, va a
conducir la 8th Annual National Vigil for All Victims of Gun

THE IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER GIFTS
Current law allows individuals age 70½ or older to make tax-free
gifts up to $100,000, from a traditional IRA directly to a parish,
school or the Diocese prior to Dec. 31, 2020. IRA gifts after Dec.
31st will be counted for 2021. Recap of an IRA charitable rollover
- A donor and a spouse can each make a direct IRA gift if: The
donor is age 70½ or older on the day of the gift. The donor
transfers up to $100,000 directly from the donor’s IRA to a
qualified charity. The gift qualifies as a Required Minimum
Distribution (RMD) and is not subject to income taxes. This applies
only to IRAs and not to other retirement plans. The donor does not
receive any goods or services in return for the rollover gift. The
gift needs to be transacted by Dec. 31, 2020, for the gift to

JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO… Today is Gaudete Sunday -- we add a new
dimen-
sion to our waiting….joyfulness!! We hear Mary’s
message, “My spirit rejoices in God my savior be-
cause the One Who was, Who is and Who is yet to
come is on His way! In Mary’s case she was carrying
the long awaited One for his first appearance
amongst us as one of us, but for us, our spirits re-
joice in God our savior for Christ has come and will
come again!
But, how can we rejoice in the midst of all the prob-
lems of our own lives, not to mention the immense
suffering and tragedies unfolding in the world
around us in the midst of this pandemic that is rav-
aging the world?! Joy in the midst of the sorrow
and suffering of those grieving the loss of their loved
ones? It all seems a bit much! Yet that is precisely
what scripture is calling us to -- to be joyful in the
midst of our anger, in the midst of our fear and
trembling, to trust in God, understanding that in the
midst of it all God is present with us in the midst of
our suffering, loving us through it!
John the Baptist proclaims the coming of the Messi-
ah. But, not the one they all thought was coming --
One much greater…God’s very self…in flesh…
Emmanuel…God with us! And for that we rejoice
because in the midst of all of our brokenness and

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) R C I A
We welcome this year’s RCIA participants. The Rite of Acceptance
was celebrat-
ed at the 4 p.m. Mass on December 5. Our catechumens are seeking
Baptism,
Eucharist and Confirmation. Our candidates are seeking to be
fully received in
the Catholic Church through Eucharist and Confirmation. We also
recognize our
confirmand, an adult Catholic who is preparing to receive
Eucharist and Confir-
mation.
James Daley, Catechumen -- I am from Alexandria and have lived
here all my life. I’m
currently a senior in high school. I was first introduced to the
Catholic church by my grand-
parents, as it has been a long tradition in my family. I first
started attending Our Lady
Queen of Peace on a regular basis in the Spring of 2019. I am
very excited to be a part of
RCIA and Our Lady Queen of Peace because of its commitment to
its community. As I
move through the RCIA process, I hope to strengthen my
relationship with Christ and
learn more about the Catholic tradition.
Eva Irwin, Confirmand -- I moved to the area in August of 2019.
I am a teacher and volley-
ball coach. I started attending OLQP after going with my mother
sometimes when she and
my father lived in Arlington. I have always really enjoyed and
gotten a lot out of the Mass-
es I have attended at OLQP, and I wanted to be able to fully
participate in Mass which is
why I began the RCIA process. I am looking forward to continuing
to build my relationship
with God and growing in my faith.
Molly Hill Shaffer, Candidate -- I grew up in Williamsburg, VA
where I was baptized in the
Episcopal Church. My husband and I moved to Arlington, VA after
meeting in college and
we married in the Catholic Church several years ago. I found
OLQP through my cousins
who also live in the area. I am excited to join my husband as I
learn and grow in the Cath-
olic faith and look forward to the day we also baptize our
daughter. I'm grateful for the vir-
tual opportunity and warm welcome from OLQP.
Reina Velasquez, Catechumen – I live in Arlington. We found OLQP
3 years ago and it
became our family’s parish. We have 3 boys – 10-year-old,
9-year-old and 9-month-old. I
was raised as a Catholic but was never baptized. Once we started
going to OLQP I felt so
welcomed and loved, which I did not feel in the parish I grew up
in. I decided to start my
journey with our boys – which we baptized at OLQP as well. I’m
excited to start this jour-
ney to deepen my relationship with the Lord and raise our family
in the Catholic faith.
Jenni Wallace, Candidate -- I grew up in the Protestant
tradition, and I've been attending
Catholic Church with my husband for the entirety of our marriage
(21 years). The forced
slowdown over the last few months has allowed me time to reflect
on my spirituality and
has shown me how much I value the Church and its community. I am
grateful to the RCIA
team at OLQP for welcoming me, and I am looking forward to
joining my husband and
three sons in the Catholic faith.

Our Lady of Guadalupe has a message for the powerful today
on the vaccine for COVID-19

This week the Catholic community marked two notable realities in
the life of a major actor in salvation his-tory, Mary of Nazareth.
First on Tuesday the 8th, we celebrated her protection from all
evil (her Immacu-late Conception); and second, on Saturday the
12th, we mark her ap-pearance on a hillside called Tepeyac in
Guadalupe near Mexico City.
The belief in Mary’s Immaculate Conception resides in the DNA of
the Catholic faith community. Even to-day when it is not a major
devotion of post-Vatican II Catholicism, we still hold dear that
the divine choice of Mary to be the major agent of Christ’s
humanity protected her from any taint of sin. We understand that
tradition of her Immaculate Conception with all that it implies is
very much an Advent story.
More accessible is the Guadalupe story. In the very early
colonial peri-od, so the story goes, a poor Mexi-can native heard
beautiful sounds coming from a hill called Tepeyac, in Guadalupe
near Mexico City. Follow-ing the sound, he sees a vision of a very
lovely woman who told him that she was the Mother of the true
God.
We say that the legend of “la Guada-lupana” is accessible
because, as liberation theologian Gustavo Gutierrez has pointed
out, it holds a compelling and modern truth. Like practically every
story of similar ap-paritions, the Virgen instructs the poorest to
call on the most powerful to a specific action. Juan Diego, the
Mexican Indian peasant, lowest of the low in the social strata of
that time and place, must carry a mes-sage from the Virgen Mary to
His
Grace, Juan de Zumárraga, the pow-erful bishop of Mexico City.
Gutierrez insists that this inversion of the prevailing social
norms of the time reflects the prayer of the Im-maculate One, “God
has scattered the proud in the conceit of their hearts, brought
down the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly, filled the
hungry with good things and sent the rich away hun-gry”
(Luke1:51-53). Mary reflects God’s preferential option for the
poor. It engages us as never before. The event is also central to
Advent.
“La Guadalupana”—and her under-standing of God’s concern for the
poor—has an equally urgent and specific message for the powerful
today, equal to that delivered by little Juan Diego to His Grace,
Juan de Zumárraga. As humanity begins to receive the benefits of
the mirac-ulous scientific achievement, a vac-cine to prevent
COVID-19, the clear message is that it must be shared equitably
with the 7.8 billion of us across the planet. Some are already
asking if the vaccine will actually be-
long to all nations and be adminis-tered first to those places
in the world which need it most. One im-mediately thinks of Haiti
and Zimba-bwe and situations like the refugee camp Lampedusa in
Sicily, the chil-dren in detention centers on our Southern
border—the list of these unprotected “hot spots” goes on and
on.
We may not be able to do very much personally about this global
moral challenge, which is a first and crucial test of humanity’s
possibilities for a “new normal” of universal brother- and
sisterhood. However, there are prominent individuals like Pope
Francis and U.N. Secretary General António Guterres who are raising
their voices in this regard. Weeks ago, the Pope set up a
high-level Vatican commission to work with other national and
international agencies for global equity in distrib-uting the
vaccine. Guterres warned this week, “Vaccine nationalism leaves the
world’s poorest nations unable to secure COVID-19 vaccine.”
Surely as we move into this era of COVID-19 prevention, more and
more voices will be raised in this re-gard. Pax Christi’s voice has
to be among them in this greatest chal-lenge ever to humanity.
